The 2022 REDMAGIC 7 packs a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a 165 Hz AMOLED display, capacitive shoulder triggers and an internal cooling fan into a phone built around gaming. Those features make it compelling for long play sessions and touch-heavy games, but its large size, potentially audible fan, launch-era software and lack of an IP rating are real trade-offs. It is best considered as a gaming-focused used-phone option—not as a proven current bargain, since present stock, condition and software support have not been established.
Is the REDMAGIC 7 good for gaming?
On paper, yes: the REDMAGIC 7 combines flagship-class launch-era hardware with controls and cooling features most conventional phones do not have. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 handles the processing, while a built-in fan and REDMAGIC’s ICE cooling system are intended to help during demanding sessions. The display runs at up to 165 Hz, and capacitive shoulder triggers give compatible games extra inputs.
That 165 Hz figure is the display’s maximum refresh rate, not a guarantee that every game renders at 165 frames per second. Game support, graphics settings and workload all matter. REDMAGIC-published review material says active cooling primarily improved longer-term performance in its 3DMark stress test, but did not eliminate performance loss altogether. The result supports the idea that the fan can help sustained play; it does not establish that the phone never throttles. REDMAGIC’s review
Shoulder triggers add useful inputs
The capacitive shoulder triggers can be mapped as touch inputs in supported games, giving players another way to reach actions without covering as much of the screen with their thumbs. REDMAGIC’s launch material lists a 500 Hz trigger response. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement or a promise that every game supports trigger mapping. Cooling is a trade-off, not a guarantee
The internal fan is a distinctive gaming feature, but it adds another sound source. In a REDMAGIC-published review, the reviewer described smooth play in tested titles, warmth under load and faint fan noise in a quiet room. Those are observations from that review, not universal test results; the phone may be less noticeable in a noisy environment and more conspicuous in a silent one. REDMAGIC’s review
Display, memory and other key specifications

What the REDMAGIC 7 is like beyond gaming
Large screen, large phone
A 6.8-inch display gives games room for controls and makes the phone’s high refresh rate part of the experience, but it also means a substantial device to hold. People who prioritize one-handed use or a compact handset should weigh that size against the gaming benefits.
Wired audio and launch-era software
The 3.5 mm headphone jack is useful for wired gaming headsets or earphones. REDMAGIC’s launch announcement identifies Android 12 with REDMAGIC OS 5.0 at release. That is historical launch information only: it does not confirm the update policy, current software version or security-patch status of a particular handset. Japanese launch announcement

No stated IP rating
REDMAGIC-published review material says the phone has no IP rating. In particular, the presence of cooling vents is not a substitute for a dust- or water-resistance certification. Treat exposure to water and dust as a risk rather than relying on an official protection rating. REDMAGIC review
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the REDMAGIC 7 worth buying now?
It may suit someone who specifically wants physical-feeling shoulder controls, a high-refresh display and active cooling, and who is comfortable with a large phone and gaming-first design. Whether it is a good purchase now depends on the individual handset and seller: current stock, used-device condition, firmware status, carrier compatibility and accessory availability are not established by the 2022 launch materials or REDMAGIC-hosted reviews.
