Redot is a free, open-source engine for making both 2D and 3D games in one editor. It is a community-driven fork of Godot, uses the MIT license, and supports exports to desktop, mobile and web platforms. Console releases involve additional platform-specific arrangements.

What is Redot Engine?

Redot is a cross-platform game-development engine built around a unified editor for 2D and 3D projects. Its tools cover scene editing, rendering, animation, physics, audio, scripting, asset importing, editor plugins and game packaging. The project describes itself as a community-driven fork of Godot that began in September 2024, and maintains its own repository and documentation.

Is Redot Engine free, including for commercial games?

Yes. Redot is distributed under the permissive MIT license. Its official FAQ says you may download, use, modify and redistribute the engine for personal, nonprofit or commercial purposes without paying royalties. Some third-party libraries included with or used by a project can have separate license terms, so check those components when distributing a game.

Which platforms can Redot target?

Redot exports games to Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and the web. Console deployment is possible through platform-specific arrangements, but it is not equivalent to a general, open-source console export: console manufacturers impose licensing requirements that prevent Redot from providing one. The export documentation explains the export workflow and platform considerations.

Platform or use What Redot supports
Windows, macOS and Linux Desktop export targets; the editor also runs on these operating systems.
Android Game export is supported. Android editor support is marked experimental in the feature documentation.
iOS Game export is supported.
Web Web export is supported.
Consoles Requires platform-specific arrangements and manufacturer licensing; Redot does not provide an open-source console export.

What are Redot export templates?

Export templates supply the platform-specific pieces used when packaging a project for release. Redot’s download page lists Redot 26.2 and separate standard and Mono export templates. Choose Mono templates when your project uses C# support; projects that do not need C# can use the standard templates. Install templates that match the engine version you are using so the editor can package the project for its target platform.

Is Redot suitable for 2D or 3D games?

It is designed for both. The same engine includes 2D and 3D rendering and the associated animation, physics, audio and scene-editing tools, so the choice is about whether its workflow and capabilities suit your project rather than whether it supports one dimension exclusively. New users can follow the official First 2D Game or First 3D Game learning path.

How does Redot package a game?

Projects can be packaged with game data in PCK or ZIP files, or with data included directly in an executable for single-file distribution. The right format depends on the release workflow and target platform; consult the export guide for platform-specific setup.

What should you consider before choosing Redot?

Redot’s no-royalty MIT license and combined 2D/3D editor may make it a fit for developers seeking an open-source engine, but engine choice also depends on practical needs beyond licensing. Compare:

  • Export pipeline: confirm the platforms you need are supported and understand any console access requirements.
  • Scripting: determine whether the available languages and runtime support fit your team’s skills and project.
  • Technical demands: evaluate rendering, performance and tooling against the needs of the game you are building.
  • Ecosystem and support: consider plugin and asset availability, editor maturity, documentation and community support.
  • Licenses beyond the engine: review third-party library and asset terms for your particular project.

The documentation includes guides for GDScript, exporting, editor plugins and engine development, along with tutorials and a generated class reference. Begin at the Redot documentation to assess the workflow and tools directly.
