The series adds characters, organizations and overlapping events over time, but that central journey is a reliable starting point—not a complete explanation of every game’s chronology.
What is Kingdom Hearts about?
Square Enix describes Kingdom Hearts as an action role-playing series developed and published by the company in collaboration with Disney. Its central hero, Sora, is chosen to wield a Keyblade and travels with Donald Duck and Goofy, allies sent by King Mickey. They confront the Heartless, seal the keyholes of Disney worlds and try to restore peace. Sora is also looking for his friends Riku and Kairi after their home is lost to darkness.
The publisher sums up the series’ theme as “Light overcoming Darkness with the power of Friendship.” That is a useful emotional guide, even as the conflict expands beyond Sora’s first adventure. Square Enix’s official series overview identifies Master Xehanort as the main antagonist of the larger conflict: he seeks to conquer Kingdom Hearts and remake the worlds according to his vision. Maleficent has a separate ambition, seeking to rule the worlds with Disney villains and control of the Heartless.
Which terms do you need to know first?
The games use familiar words in specific ways. These basic definitions help orient you without trying to resolve every later mystery.

- Keyblade: A mysterious, key-shaped weapon. Sora is chosen to wield one.
- Heartless: Manifestations of darkness born in people’s hearts. They threaten to engulf the worlds.
- Nobodies: In the official overview’s description, the remaining shells of people who have lost their hearts.
- Organization XIII: A group of thirteen black-cloaked members searching for hearts so they can become complete again. Its true agenda is initially kept secret.
- Kingdom Hearts: Both the name of the franchise and an important in-world object or goal. Its significance develops across the series, so treating it as just one simple thing can be misleading.
Other names help you keep track of the wider cast. Riku and Kairi are Sora’s friends; Terra, Aqua and Ventus are pupils of the same Keyblade Master. King Mickey, Donald and Goofy are allies, while Master Xehanort, Maleficent, Pete, the Heartless, Nobodies and Organization XIII are among the opposing forces. These are orientation points, not an exhaustive character list.
Why can the story feel hard to follow?
Three things are easy to mix up: release order, the order of events inside the story, and the format in which an entry is presented. A game can add events that happen earlier than those in a previous release; a collection can include a cutscene movie where a player might expect a playable game. The result is a saga that rewards curiosity but does not always make its route obvious.

For a newcomer, the safest approach is to distinguish what a package contains from what a story timeline might imply. A remaster is a playable game; a cutscene compilation or movie presents story scenes for viewing. Both can matter to the narrative, but they are not the same way to experience it.
What do the main collections contain?
Square Enix presents three packages as a route through the saga. Their listed contents show why counting package names—or entries—does not tell you how many full games you will play.

These contents and format descriptions come from Square Enix’s official collection page. It currently lists the collection as KINGDOM HEARTS INTEGRUM MASTERPIECE on Steam. The page also lists physical versions for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 as due October 8, 2026; that date is only six days after October 2, 2026, so check the page for current availability and edition details rather than assuming those editions are already on sale.
Should you follow release order or story chronology?
They answer different questions. Release order preserves the sequence in which players originally encountered the entries and their reveals. Chronological order arranges events by when they happen in the fictional story, which can place later-released material earlier. Neither label, by itself, tells you whether an entry is playable or a cutscene presentation.

Square Enix Japan’s support FAQ recommends this order for three entries: KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX- → KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories → KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days. The FAQ calls it chronological and specifically says 358/2 Days in the collection is for viewing, not playing. This is a useful, limited recommendation—not a definitive order for every game, film, mobile story or later update. The FAQ is in Japanese; its recommendation is translated here. If you are starting out, a practical choice is to use the collection’s sequence for your first playable entries, while recognizing that the presentation of 358/2 Days is a cutscene compilation. Switch to a chronology only if arranging events by in-world time matters more to you than experiencing the releases in their original order. The official recommendation above does not settle the full saga chronology.

What does “Dark Seeker Saga” mean?
Square Enix uses “Dark Seeker Saga” for the connected run from the original game through Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. The label identifies a saga framing, not a guarantee that every format appears in every package. The publisher’s Steam announcement used the term when the series launched on Steam on June 13, 2024.
How old is the series?
Release dates are real-world history, not clues to the games’ in-world timeline. D23 records the first Kingdom Hearts release in Japan on March 28, 2002, followed by its U.S. debut on September 17, 2002. It gives Kingdom Hearts II’s U.S. release as March 28, 2006, and Kingdom Hearts III’s as January 2019. See D23’s Kingdom Hearts entry.
