Reece Mastin’s move toward metal is a move toward the music he says he always wanted to make. The former The X Factor Australia winner has left behind the pop-oriented label direction that did not suit his tastes, while keeping music at the centre of his life. In a profile published by The West Australian on October 3, 2026, Mastin also looks back on early fame, jokes about his mother’s preference for his acoustic songs and is scheduled to return to Telethon Weekend after 12 years.
Why Reece Mastin is moving toward metal
Mastin’s heavier direction is not presented as a sudden break from music, but as a clearer expression of his own taste. He says he moved away from the label world when it became more pop-oriented, because that was not where his musical interests led him. He continued making and releasing music, joined an independent label in 2015 and toured when possible.
His childhood listening included Guns N’ Roses and Aerosmith, according to The West Australian. The 2026 rebrand brings him closer to those rock roots, with a more metal-oriented sound. Mastin says metal’s creative openness appeals to him as both a writer and performer: “There’s no wrong turn in metal music, and I find that really inspirational when you’re writing because I can sing the way I want to sing, I can play whatever guitar I want. I can put whatever sound I want in it, and it can be anything,” he says.
The profile identifies “Wembley,” released in November 2025, as a sign of the music Mastin expects to bring forward in 2027. His account of the shift is about artistic freedom; the report does not frame it as a claim that one genre is inherently better or more successful than another.

What his mother said about the change
Mastin describes his mother as preferring his acoustic songs. The exchange is reported as teasing, not as an organized protest against his musical direction. “She’s like, ‘Why can’t you just keep singing the acoustic songs?’” he jokes.
His answer is affectionate but firm: “I’m like, ‘I get it, Mum, I feel you, but I can’t just establish my career around what you want’. And the same goes for everybody around me.” For Mastin, the choice is about making a career that reflects his own musical judgment rather than other people’s expectations.

From teenage X Factor winner to a different kind of success
Mastin won The X Factor Australia in 2011, aged 16, and became a familiar television and chart figure while still a teenager. His early pop-rock releases included “Shout It Out,” “Shut Up & Kiss Me,” “Rockstar” and “Good Night”; the profile reports that “Good Night” received an ARIA No.1 Chart Award.
That early visibility is a period he can find difficult to connect with now. “I sometimes struggle to recognise the person that I was, or put myself back in those shoes. I think so much has happened since then, good and great things, but also some pretty heavy things too,” he says.

His career did not stop when the initial spotlight faded. Mastin kept releasing music and touring where he could. The profile says COVID disrupted touring; during that period, he moved to the Mount Macedon area of Victoria and helped a friend with farm work.
How Mastin measures a show now
Mastin contrasts a recent 400-seat Auckland sellout with an arena sellout he recalls from roughly 14 years earlier. Both figures are his recollections as reported by The West Australian, not independently verified ticket or venue-capacity statistics. He says he did not fully appreciate the scale of that earlier arena experience at the time; now, he feels proud and grateful when people turn up for his shows.

The comparison is personal rather than a measure of the wider music business: the profile shows how his own sense of achievement has changed from teenage arena-scale attention to valuing the audience in front of him.
