Reigns: The Witcher Review — A Bite-Sized Ballad, Not a Big RPG

Dandelion turns Geralt’s adventures into quick, comic swipe-choice runs. Reigns: The Witcher suits short sessions, but its repetition and arcade combat may not suit every fan.

Reigns: The Witcher is worth playing if you want a compact, comic Witcher spin-off—not if you are looking for another sprawling RPG. It recasts Geralt’s adventures as Dandelion’s embellished ballads, then turns each run into quick swipe decisions, shifting allegiances and occasional arcade-style monster fights. That makes it a neat fit for short sessions, though repetition and the hunt for hidden stories can wear on players who want a steady stream of fresh material.

What kind of Witcher game is Reigns: The Witcher?

Released on February 25, 2026, Reigns: The Witcher is available for PC, Mac, iOS and Android, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s launch announcement. The cited announcement and store listing do not establish a console version. The publisher describes the game as featuring “thousands of narrative combinations,” though that is a publisher claim rather than an independently verified count.

This is not a conventional Witcher RPG with open-world exploration, extended quests and direct control over Geralt’s journey. Instead, Dandelion turns the Witcher’s exploits into dramatic, unreliable songs. You swipe left or right to answer requests and dilemmas, with familiar people and situations available for comic, sometimes scandalous reinterpretation. CD PROJEKT RED says the cards were written with writers and loremasters to align their tone and content with the Witcher universe; the game’s joke is that Dandelion may still make the telling his own.

How do the runs and choices work?

Each run strings together short decision cards. A swipe selects one of two responses, changing reputations across four measures: humans, non-humans, mages and the Witcher path. Let a reputation swing too far toward an extreme and the story ends. The Witcher measure also serves a different purpose: raising it can lead into monster combat.

PC Gamer describes runs that set three random goals alongside the shifting reputations and unlockable story material. That structure gives choices an immediate consequence and makes restarting part of the design: try another approach, see what changes, and work toward new inspirations or endings. It also means the central interaction stays deliberately narrow. If you want tactical dialogue with many possible responses or a character build that changes how you explore, the swipe format is not trying to provide that.

What is combat like?

Monster fights interrupt the card-based rhythm with an arcade-style board. Geralt dodges incoming attacks while positioning himself to strike or use Witcher signs. The change gives the game a more active beat, but it is also the part reviewers found less comfortable. PC Gamer’s reviewer preferred thumbsticks to a mouse for combat and used a controller; that is a personal preference, not a requirement. PC Gamer lists the game as Steam Deck Verified.

MeriStation’s Spanish-language review also identified combat as the awkward element, while praising the minimalist art, music drawn from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the Spanish localization. Those are MeriStation’s judgments in a Spanish-market review, not universal measures of quality.

What works—and what may wear thin?

The appeal: quick decisions and Dandelion’s point of view

The strongest fit is for players who enjoy Witcher references and want to dip in for a few decisions rather than settle into a long RPG session. Dandelion’s unreliable narration gives the game room to make familiar characters and situations feel playful without presenting every event as a straight retelling. The short-run format also makes it easy to pick up and put down, a quality PC Gamer specifically praised for handheld play.

  • FULL COMPONENT SET: Includes a double-layered board, two detailed miniatures (Manticore School Witcher and Monster Troll), 142 cards, wooden markers, and a plastic insert for easy organization.

The drawback: repetition and secrets that take persistence

The same repeatable structure can become monotonous when new situations stop arriving at a satisfying pace. PC Gamer praised the game when it introduced fresh material, but criticized repetitive runs and the substantial experimentation required to uncover secret endings. Its score was 65/100. That number is PC Gamer’s individual review score, not an aggregated rating or consensus.

Should you play it instead of a full Witcher RPG?

Think of Reigns: The Witcher as a smaller side dish, not a substitute for a mainline adventure. The distinction is about what you want to do, not which game is objectively better:

Choose Reigns: The Witcher if you want… Choose a conventional Witcher RPG if you want…
Short, repeatable narrative runs Long-form exploration and quests
Binary swipe choices and reputation management Direct character control and broader RPG systems
A comedic, unreliable Dandelion framing A more straightforward story presentation
Simple touch-and-swipe play, with separate arcade combat Combat and exploration integrated into a larger role-playing adventure

These are different formats, not equivalent products. If the appeal is checking in on the Witcher world in short bursts and seeing how far Dandelion can stretch a tale, the smaller scope is the point. If what you want is a long journey built around exploring as Geralt, this is not that game.

Verdict

Reigns: The Witcher is a worthwhile smaller spin-off for Witcher fans who are open to a playful card game and do not need every visit to the setting to become a major RPG. Its best moments come from the brisk choices, familiar lore filtered through Dandelion’s exaggerations, and the surprise of new story material. Its repeated runs and less polished-feeling combat make it a less convincing pick for players who need sustained novelty or the breadth of a full Witcher adventure.
