Relooted is a single-player heist action-adventure from South African studio Nyamakop, released on Steam on February 10, 2026. It is available on PC through Steam and on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Its strongest draw is its fictional restitution premise and the real artifacts it puts in view; whether its planning-and-escape loop works as a tense heist is a separate question.
What is Relooted gameplay like?
The loop is built around preparation and escape: assemble a crew, plan a route, prepare the heist, take the artifact, then get out. Steam describes a single-player game in which players plan escape routes before taking the cargo, and lists 70 real-life artifacts as part of the experience. Steam’s game listing is the official source for those details.
The central design test is whether the planning creates meaningful choices that change how an escape unfolds. A plan is satisfying when it gives the player room to weigh routes and preparation, then makes the getaway feel earned. If execution reduces those decisions to a fixed sequence, the premise may promise more agency than the mechanics deliver. The available published material describes the intended loop, but does not establish a particular difficulty curve, runtime, or performance on specific hardware.
Xbox Wire described the intended feel this way: “The goal of Relooted was always to make you feel like you were in a heist montage from a movie of your own planning.” That is a useful statement of ambition, not proof that every mission delivers the same level of tension. What is Relooted about?
Set near the end of the 21st century, Relooted imagines a Transatlantic Returns Treaty intended to send cultural objects back to their countries of origin. An amendment narrows the agreement to artifacts on public display. Museums respond by taking objects out of view, and the protagonists decide to recover them themselves through stealthy heists.
That is the game’s fictional setup, not a depiction of actual restitution law or a recommendation to take artifacts. Its dramatic reversal makes the player’s objective clear, while the objects themselves connect the caper to real histories: Steam says the 70 featured artifacts exist in real life and carry cultural, historical, and spiritual significance.

Does the historical premise work?
The premise gives each target more weight than ordinary heist cargo. Players are not just stealing valuables in a fictional world; the objects point toward ongoing disputes over who holds cultural heritage, who can access it, and what return should mean. The game’s artifact presentations can therefore do something a conventional action plot often cannot: prompt curiosity about the object beyond its role in a mission.
That educational dimension matters in light of the scale of the issue, but the figure should be read with its authorship and date attached. A 2018 report by Felwine Sarr and Bénédicte Savoy, commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron, estimated that 90% of sub-Saharan Africa’s tangible cultural heritage was held in Western collections. PC Gamer cites this estimate in its launch review; it is the report’s estimate, not a figure produced by the game or by PC Gamer. PC Gamer’s review also frames the title as more effective as a history lesson than as a heist game. That is one critic’s judgment, not a consensus verdict.

Relooted is most compelling for players drawn to its cultural-restoration premise and the opportunity to encounter real artifacts through a game. The heist loop has a clear appeal—planning a route, then trying to escape with the object—but its success depends on how much the setup lets players shape the getaway and how well execution sustains tension. PC Gamer’s launch review suggests the historical subject matter lands more strongly than the heist mechanics; readers who prioritize tightly varied heist systems should weigh that criticism rather than assume the premise alone guarantees a great caper.
Steam showed Very Positive user sentiment, with 87% positive from 260 reviews in the October 8, 2026 search snapshot. Store ratings and review counts change over time, so check the live listing for the current figure. The game is listed for PC on Steam and Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC in official listings; controller support appears among Steam’s tags, but no specific controller is required by the evidence here.
