The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is no longer on the way: Bethesda released it on April 22, 2025. Bethesda describes the project as a remaster, not a remake, and says it preserves the original game while updating its presentation and selected systems.
Is the Oblivion remake real?
Yes, the project is real and has been released, but its official name is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Bethesda announced its launch on April 22, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, including availability through Game Pass. Bethesda’s launch announcement described it as arriving nearly 20 years after the original 2006 release; that is Bethesda’s characterization, not an exact elapsed-time calculation.
The word “remake” is not the studio’s label. Bethesda Game Studios said, “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it,” describing the aim as keeping the original recognizable while presenting it with modern technology. Bethesda Game Studios’ launch statement frames the project as an update to the 2006 game rather than a replacement built to be wholly different.
What changed in Oblivion Remastered?
Bethesda describes a substantial visual refresh alongside selected revisions to game systems and usability. Its feature overview says Unreal Engine 5 tools were used for visual improvements, while the original game continues to power gameplay and world logic. These are Bethesda’s descriptions of the project, not independent performance or technical test results.

Bethesda identifies Virtuos as its development partner. The studio says the teams updated art, animation, effects, voices and systems while retaining the original’s core. The result is therefore best understood as the 2006 role-playing game with a modernized presentation and selected revisions—not as a wholly new Oblivion built from scratch. What is included, and where can you play?
The standard edition at launch included the digital base game, both major story expansions and the listed additional DLC. The Deluxe edition added themed quests and digital extras. Bethesda’s current product page lists Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the launch platforms and identifies a physical cartridge for Switch 2; that format should not be assumed to apply to other platforms.
