Yes—classes matter in Remnant 2, but mostly as an early-game choice and a way to specialize a build. The game calls its classes archetypes. Your starting archetype determines your opening armor and weapons, signature trait, perks, skills, and general playstyle. It also has its own progression. However, that first decision is not permanent: you can unlock other archetypes, change to them on the same character, and eventually equip two archetypes together. The archetype in the first, or Prime, slot determines which Prime Perk is active, so class choice remains important even after you have access to the whole system.
What “classes” mean in Remnant 2
Remnant 2 uses the term archetype for its class system. An archetype is more than a label attached to a starting screen. It supplies a package of mechanics that shape how your character plays and how that part of the build develops.

- Starting equipment: each starting archetype has its own armor and weapon loadout.
- Active abilities: skills belong to their archetypes rather than being interchangeable abilities that every character receives at the start.
- Passive effects: perks provide ongoing advantages associated with the archetype.
- A signature trait: the archetype has a trait tied to it while that archetype is equipped.
- Archetype progression: skills and perks unlock as the archetype gains levels.
That combination makes the first choice meaningful. A character beginning with a damage-oriented kit, a defensive kit, or a support-oriented kit will approach the opening portion of the game differently. The choice affects your first experience more than a cosmetic selection would.

Gunfire Games’ archetype announcement on February 21, 2023 explains that players can earn the other starting archetypes and switch to them on the same character. How much does the starting archetype affect the beginning?
Your opening kit sets the first playstyle
The immediate effect is practical: your starting armor, weapons, skills, perks, and trait are selected for you as part of the archetype. This means two new characters can enter the same early area with different tools and priorities. One player may have a kit built around staying alive and helping a team, while another may begin with tools that reward aggressive damage or careful ranged play.
Because those items and abilities are available from the start, the archetype influences which encounters feel comfortable, which distances you prefer, and how you spend the first part of your progression. If you already know that you want a particular role, choosing the archetype whose opening kit matches it reduces the amount of adjustment required.
Its progression is exclusive at first
An archetype does not stop mattering after the opening loadout. As it levels, its own skills and perks unlock. The archetype trait is also associated with that archetype while it is equipped. In other words, selecting an archetype gives you a progression track, not just a starting inventory.

The evidence available for this system does not establish a single universally strongest starting track. Balance can change with patches, and the developer’s explanation emphasizes the breadth of the system rather than a ranking. Treat the first choice as a preference about the experience you want to begin with, not as a permanent optimization test.
Are you locked into your first class?
No. The starting choice does not prevent you from unlocking the other starting archetypes. Once another archetype is unlocked, you can switch to it on the same character. You therefore do not need to restart solely because the first role no longer suits you.

The exact unlock costs, locations, and timing are not established by the sources used here, so they should be checked in the current game rather than assumed from an older guide. The important rule is the order of operations: you begin with one archetype, earn access to others, and then change your equipped archetype when the desired option becomes available.
What switching changes
Switching changes which archetype’s skills, perks, and trait are serving as your active class features. It also changes the role suggested by your equipped kit. You are not deleting the original archetype or losing the character; you are selecting a different archetype for the current build.

What happens when you equip two archetypes?
At a point in character progression, Remnant 2 lets you equip two separate archetypes. Gunfire Games president David Adams described the purpose in an Xbox Wire interview published July 28, 2023: archetypes are “much more extensive with passive abilities, unique traits, and skills unique to the Archetype,” and later you can equip two to create “unique combinations of abilities.”
The two slots are not equal. One is the Prime slot, and the other is the secondary slot.

| Combination element | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| Prime archetype | Its Prime Perk is active. Its skills receive the added benefits associated with being Prime. |
| Secondary archetype | Its archetype features still contribute to the combination, but its Prime Perk is not active. |
| Changing the Prime slot | Swaps which Prime Perk is active and changes which archetype’s skills receive the Prime-slot benefits. |
Why the slot order matters
Two players can equip the same pair of archetypes and still have different versions of the combination because they put different archetypes in the Prime slot. If the first archetype supplies the defensive or utility effect you need most, make it Prime. If the second archetype’s Prime Perk is more valuable for the encounter, reverse the order.
This is why evaluating a dual-archetype build requires more than asking whether two roles work well together. You must also decide which one should be Prime. Compare the Prime Perks, the skills you expect to use most, and the passive effects that support your preferred approach.
How archetype traits work after leveling
The archetype trait is initially tied to its own archetype. While that archetype is equipped, the trait is part of its identity and progression. The system becomes more flexible after the archetype reaches its maximum level: its trait can then be used in other builds, but doing so requires spending trait points.
That creates a meaningful trade-off. Leveling an archetype can provide immediate access to its skills and perks, while reaching maximum level can make its trait useful outside that archetype. A trait is therefore not automatically a universal bonus from the moment you discover the archetype. Its broader use is earned through progression and carries a trait-point cost when applied to an unrelated build.
Planning around the trait
- If you are still learning the game, use the archetype whose skills and perks you enjoy; do not delay play for a theoretical end-state.
- If a trait is central to a later build, remember that the archetype must reach maximum level before the trait can be used elsewhere.
- When moving the trait into another build, account for the trait points required rather than treating it as free.
- Keep the trait’s progression state in mind when comparing an established archetype with a newly unlocked one.
How to choose a starting archetype without overthinking it
1. Start with the opening role you actually want
Read the in-game description and inspect the listed starting armor, weapons, skills, perks, and trait. Choose the role that sounds fun for the first sessions: direct damage, durability, support, precision, or another approach represented by the available archetypes. The opening kit is the only part of the decision you cannot change immediately.

2. Check whether its progression matches your habits
Look at the skills and perks that unlock as the archetype levels. A kit that feels attractive at the starting screen may be less appealing if its later abilities reward a style you do not intend to use. Conversely, an archetype that seems modest at first may become more interesting as its progression unfolds.
3. Consider the trait as a medium-term goal
Ask whether you would want the archetype’s trait in a different build later. You do not need to know the answer to begin, but understanding that a maxed archetype can export its trait—at a trait-point cost—helps you decide which progression tracks deserve continued investment.
4. Leave room for a second archetype
Once dual archetypes become available, think in terms of interactions rather than isolated rankings. A skill that covers a weakness in your first archetype may be more valuable than another source of the same effect. Decide which archetype should be Prime only after considering the Prime Perks and the skills you will use most often.
5. Treat tier lists cautiously
No universally correct starting choice is established here. Patch changes can alter balance, and a recommendation that ignores your opening role, preferred skills, trait plans, and Prime-slot order is incomplete. Use rankings as context if they are current, but make the final decision from the mechanics you intend to play.
A practical way to compare two archetypes
When deciding between two real options, compare them on the same axes instead of asking which class is simply “best.”

| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which opening role and loadout do I prefer? | This determines how the first part of the game feels and which weapons, armor, and skills you can use immediately. |
| Which skills and passive perks support my approach? | Archetypes have exclusive progression features, so the answer affects the abilities you unlock as the archetype levels. |
| Which trait is worth leveling? | The trait remains tied to its archetype at first and becomes transferable only after maximum level, with a trait-point cost in another build. |
| Which Prime Perk should be active? | In a two-archetype setup, only the Prime archetype’s Prime Perk is active and its skills receive the Prime benefits. |
| Can the pair cover each other’s weaknesses? | Both archetypes contribute features, so complementary skills and passives can matter more than two similar roles. |
This framework also works when comparing a familiar archetype with a newly unlocked one. You can preserve the same character, test the new role, and later combine the two if their features support one another.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: restarting because the first choice feels wrong
The first archetype matters, but it is not a permanent lock. Unlock another archetype and switch on the same character instead of discarding progress solely over the initial selection.
Mistake: assuming every archetype feature is active in a combination
Both archetypes contribute features, but only the Prime archetype’s Prime Perk is active. Check the slot order before judging a combination. Swapping the slots changes the result.

An archetype’s trait is tied to that archetype until it reaches maximum level. Using it in another build then costs trait points. Plan for that requirement when building around a trait.
Mistake: choosing from a universal “best class” list
The available evidence supports role and synergy comparisons, not a permanent ranking. A starting archetype should be judged by its opening kit, progression, trait, and eventual Prime-slot role. Balance rankings are also sensitive to updates that are not covered here.
Mistake: assuming unlock details are timeless
Current unlock costs and locations are not established by the cited developer explanations. Verify those details in the version you are playing rather than relying on an old number or route.
So, do classes matter in Remnant 2?
They matter in three distinct ways. First, the starting archetype changes your early equipment, abilities, and playstyle. Second, each archetype has its own leveling track of skills, perks, and a trait. Third, dual-archetype builds make the Prime-slot decision part of long-term specialization.
They do not permanently determine your character. Other starting archetypes can be unlocked and equipped on the same character, and two archetypes can eventually be combined. The best starting choice is therefore the opening role and kit you want to play, followed by deliberate decisions about trait investment, skill synergy, and which archetype should be Prime.
