remoteinstall.dll: Find the Owning App Before Repairing Windows

“The program can’t start because remoteinstall.dll is missing from your computer.”

The remoteinstall.dll error does not identify one universal Windows component. The same filename can belong to different third-party applications, so the correct repair starts by finding which program is requesting remoteinstall.dll.

Which fix applies to you

Use the branch that best matches what you see:

  • The error names a backup tool, management agent, installer, or game: repair or reinstall that specific application first.
  • The error appeared after an update, failed installation, or uninstall: run the application’s Repair or Verify option, then reinstall it if necessary.
  • The file disappeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The file exists beside the application but will not load: investigate dependencies, permissions, architecture, or a damaged installation.
  • Several products contain remoteinstall.dll: keep each product’s copy with its own application. Never swap DLLs between programs.
  • Several Windows features are also failing: run DISM and SFC, but do not expect SFC to restore a third-party application DLL.
  • The message appears during driver or hardware software startup: repair that vendor package. A driver reinstall is not a normal fix for this filename.
  • You found a copy on a DLL download page: do not use it. Its version, architecture, publisher, and compatibility with your application are not established.

What is remoteinstall.dll

remoteinstall.dll is a DLL filename associated with application software. Its internal description is reported as “RemoteInstall DLL,” while “RemoteInstall Dynamic Link Library” describes the program association rather than proving that every copy comes from the same publisher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A DLL is a library loaded by an executable when the application needs particular functions. The executable may look for the library in its own installation directory or through Windows’ DLL search process. If the file is absent, damaged, blocked, incompatible, or unable to load one of its dependencies, Windows can stop the application before its main window appears.

Known product associations include:

  • Altiris/Symantec AClient: an archived Broadcom document places RemoteInstall.dll with the AClient remote-installation files, including rcinstall.exe and a language resource DLL.
  • EaseUS Backup Center: an installation inventory lists a product-specific RemoteInstall.dll in that application’s bin directory.
  • Commvault Simpana: a security-signature record associates another copy with Commvault software.

These are separate product associations, not proof that the files are interchangeable. A matching filename does not mean matching code, version, architecture, or dependencies.

There is no reliable basis for treating remoteinstall.dll as a standard Windows file. It is not established as a universal System32 or SysWOW64 component, and it is not universally installed by Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.

First identify the program that owns the file

Repairing Windows before identifying the application often wastes time. Start with the error dialog and the file path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the executable name in the error

Look at the title bar and message around the DLL error. The dialog may identify the application, launcher, service, or installer that failed. Write down the exact executable name.

For example, the useful clue is not only:

remoteinstall.dll was not found

It is also whether the dialog belongs to a backup application, management agent, game launcher, updater, or a program that starts with Windows.

If the dialog disappears too quickly, open Event Viewer:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Choose Filter Current Log from the right-hand Actions pane.
  6. Look for an error at the time the application failed.
  7. Check the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and General details.

The event may reveal a different executable from the one you expected. That executable is the application to repair.

Find copies already installed

Use File Explorer to search the affected drive for:

remoteinstall.dll

For every result, right-click the file, choose Properties, and record:

  • The complete Location path
  • The Digital Signatures tab, if present
  • The Details tab
  • The product directory above it
  • Whether it is inside Program Files, Program Files (x86), a game directory, or an unusual temporary folder

Do not assume the first result is the correct one. A computer can contain multiple copies belonging to unrelated applications.

The path is often more useful than generic DLL metadata. A file under an EaseUS, Commvault, Altiris, game, or vendor-specific directory points toward that product. A copy in a temporary folder, user profile download directory, or unknown location deserves extra caution.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application

This is the safest and most likely solution when one program reports the error.

Try the application’s own repair option

If the application includes a launcher or maintenance tool:

  1. Open the application’s launcher.
  2. Select the affected product or game.
  3. Open Settings, Manage, or Properties.
  4. Choose Verify, Scan and repair, or Repair files.
  5. Wait for the check to finish.
  6. Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
  7. Start the application again.

For a conventional Windows application:

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Find the application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the application in Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.

The Repair option may replace missing files without removing settings. If there is no Repair option, continue with a clean reinstall.

Reinstall from the official source

  1. Back up application settings, saved games, profiles, or license information if the program requires them.
  2. Close the application and its launcher.
  3. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Uninstall the affected application.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Download the installer from the application publisher’s official website, official launcher, or original licensed store.
  7. Install the same product family and the appropriate release for your system.
  8. Start the application once the installation completes.

If the installer offers Repair, Modify, or Custom, use Repair first. If the error began after an update, reinstalling the current official package is usually better than trying to locate an older standalone DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful repair means the application starts without the remoteinstall.dll message and its normal features work. If the error remains, check whether the installer placed a new copy in the expected application directory. If it did not, the wrong product may have been repaired, or another program may be producing the error.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a DLL after an update, a file change, or a detection decision.

In Windows Security:

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review detections from the time the application stopped working.
  7. Open a matching entry and inspect the file path and detection details.

Do not restore the file just because its name appears in the error. First confirm that:

  • The path belongs to the application you intentionally installed.
  • The application came from an official installer or trusted store.
  • The file has a valid publisher signature, when one is expected.
  • The security product is not reporting a broader infection.
  • The application publisher has not issued a removal notice.

The safer correction is normally to reinstall the application so its files are restored from the official package. Update Windows Security and the application before testing again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are certain the detection is a false positive, Protection History may provide an Actions menu with Restore or Allow on device. Use an exclusion only after verifying the file and publisher. Microsoft explains the risks and behavior of quarantined items in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.

If antivirus immediately quarantines the replacement file again, stop restoring it and contact the application publisher or security vendor.

Fix 3: Check architecture and dependencies

A 32-bit application generally needs the 32-bit build of its own DLL. A 64-bit application generally needs the corresponding 64-bit build. Windows directory names can be confusing: System32 is commonly used for 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system components. Do not use those folders as destinations for a downloaded application DLL.

Determine whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Start the affected application until the error appears, if possible.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Right-click a column heading.
  5. Choose Select columns.
  6. Enable Platform if your Windows version provides it.
  7. Check whether the executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.

You can also inspect the application’s official installer options. Install the package that matches the program, not merely the Windows edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand “specified module could not be found”

This message can appear even when remoteinstall.dll is visible in the application folder. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL. The missing item could be another application DLL, a runtime component, an incompatible architecture, a permission, or a damaged installation.

Try these steps:

  1. Confirm that remoteinstall.dll is in the same application directory as the executable requesting it.
  2. Right-click the application executable and select Properties.
  3. If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, use it only when you trust the installer and know it was downloaded legitimately.
  4. Run the application’s official repair option.
  5. Reinstall the application using its current official installer.
  6. Install Visual C++ only if the application’s documentation or installer names it as a prerequisite.

Microsoft provides separate x86 and x64 Visual C++ packages and explains their compatibility in its Visual C++ runtime guidance. Installing a runtime at random will not replace a product-owned remoteinstall.dll.

Fix 4: Do not register it with regsvr32 by default

regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose an entry point such as DllRegisterServer, typically for COM or ActiveX components. Microsoft documents this purpose in its regsvr32 command reference and DllRegisterServer documentation.

There is no established evidence that the different remoteinstall.dll copies associated with the products above require COM registration. Running a command such as this can produce another error without fixing the missing file:

regsvr32 remoteinstall.dll

Use regsvr32 only when the application publisher specifically instructs you to register its DLL and provides the correct 32-bit or 64-bit command. Otherwise, repair the application instead.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are relevant when several Windows features are malfunctioning, Windows reports system-file corruption, or built-in components are also failing. They are not the primary way to restore a third-party application DLL.

Run DISM, then SFC

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance recommends running DISM before SFC.

Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired or found no integrity violations. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process after restarting and check Windows Update. If Windows is healthy but the application still reports remoteinstall.dll, return to the application repair branch.

Running SFC will not safely recreate an application-specific copy from an unknown product.

When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed becomes the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; repair is performed by the full version, but reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that program.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the error belongs to hardware software

A graphics, chipset, storage, or input driver is not the normal owner of remoteinstall.dll. Driver repair is appropriate only when the error clearly comes from a hardware-management application, vendor driver package, or utility that starts with a device.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider and driver details.
  8. Use Update Driver only when a newer driver is available from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
  9. If the failure began immediately after a driver change, select Roll Back Driver when available.
  10. Restart Windows and test the hardware software.

Do not uninstall a working driver merely because remoteinstall.dll is missing. Repair the vendor’s application package first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When identifying outdated drivers manually means checking many hardware vendors and matching the right package, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers it finds; installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required for an application-owned DLL problem.

Fix 7: Investigate storage damage or malware

Use this branch when the file vanished unexpectedly, multiple application files are damaged, antivirus reports a threat, or the DLL appears in an unusual folder.

  1. Back up important documents and game saves.
  2. Run a full scan in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
  3. Inspect the DLL’s path and digital signature.
  4. Check whether other files in the application directory changed or disappeared.
  5. Reinstall the affected application from its official source.
  6. If disk errors or repeated file corruption continue, investigate the drive’s health and Windows Event Viewer storage errors.

Do not add an exclusion for an unknown DLL simply to make the error disappear. If the file is in a temporary directory or has no trustworthy installation history, remove it through the application’s cleanup or uninstall process and scan the system.

Product-specific clues

Altiris or Symantec AClient

If the error names AClient or an Altiris remote-management component, its RemoteInstall.dll belongs to that installation rather than Windows. Repair or reinstall the matching agent package through the organization’s approved management process. Do not copy the file from another workstation unless the administrator has confirmed that the package, release, architecture, and signature match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EaseUS Backup Center

If EaseUS Backup Center is named in the error, repair or reinstall Backup Center using its official installer. A product inventory has associated a copy with the application’s bin directory, which reinforces why the application folder and product version matter.

Commvault Simpana

If the executable belongs to Commvault software, use the organization’s approved Commvault repair or deployment process. The exact release and installation path cannot be inferred from the filename alone.

If none of these products is installed, do not force one of them into the diagnosis. Use the executable name and full path to identify the actual owner.

If reinstalling does not fix the error

A recurring error after reinstall usually means one of four things:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The wrong application was repaired.
  • Antivirus removed the replacement.
  • The DLL’s dependency is missing.
  • A startup entry, scheduled task, or service still points to an old installation.

Collect this information before contacting the publisher:

  1. The exact error text.
  2. The executable named in the dialog or Event Viewer.
  3. The full path where Windows expects remoteinstall.dll.
  4. Any existing copies and their paths.
  5. The file publisher and digital-signature status.
  6. Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  7. The time the problem began.
  8. Whether it followed an update, uninstall, cleanup, quarantine, or failed installation.
  9. Relevant Application event-log entries.
  10. The installer or repair log, if the product creates one.

If the application was already removed, remove the orphaned startup or service entry through the original product’s uninstaller or vendor support process. Do not install a random DLL simply to silence a startup notification.

System Restore is reasonable only when the failure clearly began after a recent software or system change and ordinary repair is unavailable. Back up important data first. Driver reinstallation should remain a targeted step, not a general response to this filename.

FAQ

Is remoteinstall.dll part of Windows?

It is not established as a standard Windows DLL. The filename has been associated with multiple third-party products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

There is no evidence that those Microsoft runtimes universally install remoteinstall.dll. Install a runtime only when the affected application identifies it as a prerequisite.

Can I download remoteinstall.dll?

Avoid random DLL download sites. A downloaded file can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another product, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged installation.

Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Keep the application’s DLL in the directory supplied by its official installer. Manual copying into Windows system folders can create conflicts and does not establish compatibility.

Will regsvr32 fix the error?

Usually not. It applies only to DLLs designed for registration and exporting the required registration function. Use it only when the product’s documentation specifically requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?

A dependency of remoteinstall.dll may be missing or incompatible. Architecture, permissions, security software, or a damaged installation can also prevent loading.

Will SFC restore the file?

SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It is not a reliable repair method for an application-owned DLL.

What is the safest fix?

Identify the executable and path, then repair or reinstall the specific application from its official installer or launcher. Do not substitute a DLL from another product.
