Preserve the original, diagnose it with ffprobe, then try a stream-copy remux before using a healthy same-camera reference or a camera-specific recovery tool. Missing metadata can often be rebuilt; overwritten bytes and bad sectors cannot be recreated reliably.
What “corrupt video” actually means
Video files have a container layer and one or more encoded streams. The container records information such as duration, track locations, timestamps and codec parameters. The streams contain the compressed video and audio themselves. A file can fail because either layer is damaged, and the correct repair depends on which layer is missing.

Missing MP4 container metadata
MP4, MOV and M4V files normally include a metadata structure called the moov atom. Cameras commonly write or finalize this index when recording stops. If the battery is removed, the card is ejected or the camera crashes, the encoded samples may remain while the index is absent or incomplete. Players then report that the file is unreadable even though much of the media data is still present. An ffprobe message such as moov atom not found identifies this container problem; it does not prove that every video frame is gone.
Truncation or filesystem damage
A recording can end abruptly, leaving a valid beginning but incomplete tables, missing tail data or a file whose directory entry no longer describes the blocks on the card. A failing card can also return I/O errors or zero-filled areas. Recovery software may be able to reconstruct a playable prefix, but it cannot restore sectors that have been overwritten or are physically unreadable.

Corrupted encoded bytes
When the H.264, H.265, ProRes, AAC or other elementary stream is damaged, rebuilding the container will not recreate the missing pictures or audio samples. A player may open the file but show freezes, blocks, silence, broken seeking or an incorrect duration. This is a different problem from a missing index and usually has a lower recovery ceiling.
Protect the original before trying anything
Every repair attempt can alter timestamps, filesystem metadata or the only surviving copy. Treat the card and file as evidence.
- Stop recording to the source card. Do not format it, run a “repair” prompt, delete clips or copy new footage onto it. New data can overwrite blocks belonging to the damaged recording.
- Create a separate working copy. Make a sector-level image when the card is unstable or showing read errors; an ordinary file copy is suitable when the card reads consistently. Store the copy on another drive and perform all experiments on duplicates.
- Keep the original filename and card structure. Do not rename or move files on the card during the first copy. Preserve any sidecar files because some cameras store timing or metadata outside the video.
- Record the camera settings. Note the camera model, resolution, frame rate, codec, audio format and whether a high-frame-rate or special recording mode was used.
- Capture a healthy reference clip. Record or locate a playable clip from the same camera using the same resolution, frame rate, codec profile and audio settings. Reference-based tools use those parameters and timing patterns to rebuild metadata.
If the operating system cannot read the card reliably, stop repeated plug-and-unplug attempts. Work from a forensic image or seek data-recovery assistance; repeated writes and filesystem “fixes” can reduce what remains recoverable.

Diagnose the file with ffprobe
ffprobe is installed with FFmpeg and reports the container and stream state without converting the media. Run it against a copy and save the complete console output:

Use the diagnostic output to choose a repair path, not as a guarantee of playability. A successful probe only establishes that FFmpeg can read the container structures it encountered.
Try a stream-copy remux first
If FFmpeg can read the streams, the least invasive operation is to write a new container while copying the existing audio and video packets. This avoids another generation of compression:
ffmpeg -i broken.mp4 -map 0 -c copy repaired.mp4-map 0 asks FFmpeg to include all detected streams, and -c copy disables re-encoding. The output may repair a damaged MP4 index or other container bookkeeping while preserving the recoverable packets. FFmpeg documentation describes FFmpeg as “a universal media converter,” and stream-copy operations are one of its core uses.

Try a second container to separate an MP4 metadata problem from an elementary-stream problem:

ffmpeg -i broken.mp4 -map 0 -c copy test.mkvIf the Matroska file plays while the MP4 does not, the packets are probably usable and the original container was the obstacle. If FFmpeg cannot demux the input at all because the moov atom is absent, options such as -err_detect ignore_err generally cannot invent the missing index; they only influence handling of errors after FFmpeg has found packets.
Why re-encoding comes later
Re-encoding can sometimes produce a playable file from a partially readable source, but it may discard damaged sections, alter timing and reduce quality. It also cannot recover packets that the demuxer never found. Preserve the stream-copy outputs and use re-encoding only on a duplicate after metadata reconstruction or partial extraction has been attempted.
Rebuild a missing index with a healthy reference
For truncated MP4, MOV or M4V recordings, Untrunc and similar reference-based tools reconstruct container metadata from a healthy clip. The reference should match the damaged recording as closely as possible:

- the same resolution, frame rate and recording mode;
- the same video codec and profile;
- the same audio codec, sample rate and channel layout; and
- a similar file structure, especially if the camera writes proprietary metadata.
A reference from a different camera or a different frame-rate mode can produce a file that opens but has wrong duration, broken seeking, out-of-sync audio or missing tracks. Keep each attempted output in a new directory and compare it with the original copy.

Reference-based repair is most promising when the encoded samples are still present and the failure occurred during finalization. It cannot reconstruct sections that were never written, were overwritten by later recordings or are unreadable because of bad sectors.
Use camera-specific recovery when appropriate
DJI recordings
DJI files can interleave proprietary metadata and subtitle packets with the video. Generic MP4 repair may therefore misinterpret the layout. DJI-focused tools such as djifix or recover_dji.py are intended for the missing-moov pattern on supported models. The recovery script uses a healthy same-camera reference:
python recover_dji.py CORRUPT.MP4 HEALTHY_REFERENCE.MP4Depending on the recording, the script can emit a recovered MP4 or a raw H.264 elementary stream that you later remux into a container. The documented djifix scope covers DJI Phantom, Mavic, Spark, Inspire and Osmo files; it is not a general repair utility for every camera.

GoPro recordings
GoPro’s recovery guidance distinguishes unfinalized recordings that can be reindexed from genuinely corrupted media. Its technical guide states: “It is impossible to repair corrupted video, but only repair corrupted <moov> atoms.” In practice, a GoPro recovery procedure is appropriate when the recording was not finalized and the underlying samples remain intact, not when codec bytes or storage sectors have been destroyed.

When local repair is not enough
If the card has bad sectors, the file contains real byte loss, no matching reference exists, or every demux attempt fails, software may recover only a partial clip or may fail entirely. Specialist desktop utilities and upload-based services advertise broader camera and format support, but they involve different trade-offs.

Never upload irreplaceable footage until you understand where it will be stored, who can access it, how long it is retained and whether the service supports your exact camera format. Test any service with a duplicate or an unimportant sample first.
Validate every recovered file
A file that opens is not necessarily repaired. Check the output from beginning to end before deleting anything:
- Confirm the reported duration is plausible compared with the camera’s recording time.
- Play the opening, middle and final minutes, including the scene where recording stopped.
- Seek repeatedly through the timeline and watch for freezes, macroblocking or sudden jumps.
- Check audio presence, channel layout and synchronization with speech or visible actions.
- Inspect frame dimensions, frame rate and orientation; incorrect metadata can make an editor interpret timing wrongly.
- Import the file into the video editor or playback device you actually need to use.
- Keep the original card image, damaged file, reference clip and every attempted output until the recovered copy has been backed up in at least one other location.
If only part of the video is valid, export that playable section to a new file and document which time range is missing. Do not describe a partial extraction as a complete repair.

A practical decision sequence
- Preserve the card and create a working copy.
- Run
ffprobeand classify the failure as missing metadata, truncation, filesystem/I/O damage or stream corruption. - When streams are readable, run the stream-copy MP4 remux and, if needed, a Matroska stream-copy test.
- For a missing index or truncated recording, apply a matching healthy reference with Untrunc or the camera’s documented recovery method.
- For supported DJI files, try the DJI-specific script with a same-camera reference; for GoPro, distinguish an unfinalized file from corrupted media.
- If storage errors or real byte loss remain, stop experimenting on the source and consider specialist recovery or a carefully vetted upload service.
- Validate duration, seeking, audio/video sync and editor import before treating the output as usable.
