repdrvfs.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. If Windows says it is missing, not found, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What this file actually does

repdrvfs.dll is associated with the Windows WMI infrastructure. Its commonly reported description is “WMI Repository Driver,” and its internal name is WMI. It ships as part of Microsoft Windows and is published by Microsoft Corporation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

WMI lets Windows and applications obtain management information about the operating system, hardware, services, devices, and software. The DLL is one component of that infrastructure. It is not the entire WMI repository, and replacing the DLL alone will not repair every WMI-related problem.

The normal location is:

%WINDIR%System32Wbem

On a typical installation, this means:

C:WindowsSystem32wbem

Microsoft documents the WMI architecture and its standard file locations in its WMI architecture documentation.

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit programs may see redirected system paths through SysWOW64. That does not mean you should copy one DLL between System32 and SysWOW64. Windows maintains architecture-specific components, and the correct file depends on the Windows edition, build, architecture, and servicing state.

Microsoft servicing documentation lists Repdrvfs.dll among Windows files. Different releases and updates contain different versions and file sizes, so there is no universal version that is correct for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer.

Causes by symptom

What you see Most likely explanation Best first action
“repdrvfs.dll is missing” after Windows starts A protected Windows file or component-store problem Install updates, then run DISM and SFC
“The code execution cannot proceed because repdrvfs.dll was not found” when one application starts Windows corruption, an application-specific dependency, or a damaged application Repair Windows, then repair the affected application
“Error loading repdrvfs.dll. The specified module could not be found” The DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing Check the file path, run DISM and SFC, and identify the triggering program
“repdrvfs.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” Wrong architecture, mismatched manual replacement, or file corruption Remove unofficial replacements and repair Windows
The error began after an update An incomplete update or servicing failure Restart, finish Windows Update, then run DISM and SFC
The file was removed by security software Quarantine or a malware-related event Review quarantine, verify the file before restoring it, and scan the computer
WMI tools or management software also fail WMI repository or service damage may be involved Run winmgmt /verifyrepository after Windows file repair
The file exists in Downloads, Temp, or an application folder It may be an impostor or an application-private copy Do not overwrite the Windows copy; check its signature and full path

The wording of these messages does not prove that the named DLL itself is the only problem. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by repdrvfs.dll is missing.

Before changing anything, note the exact message, the application or Windows operation that produced it, and when the problem began. A failure during boot or across several applications points more strongly to Windows, storage, or malware issues. A failure in only one recently installed application may require repairing that application after Windows integrity checks.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A pending or incomplete Windows update can leave protected files in an inconsistent state. Complete updates before attempting more invasive repairs.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. In some Windows 10 installations, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install every applicable update.
  6. If Windows asks you to restart, select Restart now.
  7. Return to Windows Update and check again until no further applicable updates are offered.
  8. Try the program or Windows feature that produced the error.

If the error is gone, no additional repair is necessary. If Windows Update reports an error, repeatedly fails, or the DLL message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies protected system files. SFC then checks protected files and replaces damaged versions with healthy copies from that store. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC for missing or corrupted Windows files. Its System File Checker guidance describes this sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt in the results.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
  2. Read the final message.

A successful result normally says that the restore operation completed successfully or that no component-store corruption was detected.

If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, Windows Update may not be providing usable repair files. Microsoft documents using matching Windows installation media with the /Source and /LimitAccess options in its Windows image repair documentation. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture; do not guess at a source path.

Run SFC

In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC may report that:

  • It found no integrity violations.
  • It found corrupted files and successfully repaired them.
  • It found corrupted files but could not repair some of them.
  • It could not start the repair operation.

Restart Windows after SFC finishes, then test the original program or feature again. If SFC repaired repdrvfs.dll or related files, the error should no longer appear after the restart.

Manually comparing versions or hunting through several Windows folders is unreliable, particularly when 32-bit and 64-bit redirection is involved. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the official Windows repair path.

If SFC cannot repair the file, run DISM again and then run SFC a second time. If the result still says that files could not be repaired, review:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

You can also target the expected file after confirming its actual path:

sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSystem32wbemrepdrvfs.dll

To ask SFC to scan that file specifically, use:

sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32wbemrepdrvfs.dll

Replace the path if Windows is installed on another drive or if the file is located in a different architecture-appropriate system path. Do not use a path copied from another computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check the expected path and digital signature

Do not assume that every file named repdrvfs.dll is genuine. A copy in a user profile, Downloads folder, temporary directory, or an application’s private folder may be unrelated or malicious.

To inspect the expected Windows copy:

  1. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select the address bar.
  3. Enter:
%WINDIR%System32wbem
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Look for repdrvfs.dll.
  3. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  4. Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is available.
  5. Select the signature and choose Details.
  6. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

A valid signature supports the file’s authenticity, but it does not by itself prove that the file is healthy or correct for the installed build. A missing file, an invalid signature, an unexpected path, or a file that repeatedly disappears requires further investigation.

Do not overwrite the expected Windows copy with a file downloaded from another computer or from a DLL download page. A replacement can have the wrong architecture, version, signature, or dependencies and may make servicing more difficult.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware

Security software may quarantine a file after a detection, or a malware incident may have altered protected files. Do not immediately restore a quarantined file merely because the filename matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections related to repdrvfs.dll or the application that reported the error.
  5. Note the detection name, original path, and action taken.
  6. Run Scan options and choose a Full scan.
  7. Let the scan complete.

Only consider restoring a quarantined file after confirming that it was the valid Microsoft-signed copy in the expected Windows WMI directory and that the security product’s detection was resolved or identified as a false positive. If the file was found in a temporary, download, or user-writable directory, leave it quarantined and investigate the system.

After a legitimate quarantine event, Windows Update, DISM, and SFC are safer ways to restore the protected component than copying the quarantined file manually.

Fix 5: Check whether the WMI repository is the real problem

A missing or damaged DLL is different from a corrupted WMI repository. The repository is a collection of WMI data and registration files, and repairing it does not restore a missing protected DLL.

Use this check only after running Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Enter:
winmgmt /verifyrepository
  1. Press Enter.

If Windows reports that the repository is consistent, do not reset it. Continue investigating the file, dependency, application, or Windows installation.

If Windows reports an inconsistency and your symptoms are clearly WMI-related, Microsoft provides these commands:

winmgmt /salvagerepository

The salvage command attempts to repair the repository while preserving usable information. Restart Windows and test the affected WMI-dependent operation afterward.

The more destructive reset command is:

winmgmt /resetrepository

Do not use it as a routine DLL fix. Resetting the repository returns it to its initial operating-system state and can remove registrations added by software. Use it only when Microsoft-supported troubleshooting indicates that a reset is appropriate, and record any software or management tools that may need to be repaired afterward. Microsoft documents these operations in the winmgmt command reference.

Never delete the WMI repository manually or bulk-register every DLL in the wbem folder.

Fix 6: Repair the application that triggers the error

If only one program reports the error, Windows may be healthy while that application has a damaged installation, private dependency, or incorrect configuration.

First complete DISM and SFC. Then:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select its three-dot menu or its entry.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair and follow the prompts.
  8. Restart the program.

If no repair option exists, download the application’s installer from its official vendor or use its built-in repair option. Uninstall and reinstall it only after saving settings or user data that the application stores locally.

For a game, a launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair feature is relevant only when the game itself owns the failing copy. It does not repair the Windows copy in %WINDIR%System32Wbem.

If the application is an older 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows, do not copy a 32-bit DLL over a 64-bit system file. The application may be using redirected paths or may have an independent installation problem.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to a device

repdrvfs.dll is not a general-purpose device driver file, so updating drivers is not the default repair. Consider drivers only if the error began with a particular device, management utility, hardware change, or device-related application.

To check for driver problems:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories related to the affected device.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the relevant device.
  6. Select Properties and read the General and Driver tabs.
  7. Select Update driver.
  8. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

Prefer drivers supplied through Windows Update or the device manufacturer. Do not install a random driver package merely because its installer mentions WMI.

Manually identifying which of many drivers is outdated can take time and can lead to the wrong package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while installing drivers requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows file repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Use Windows repair or recovery when corruption returns

If DISM and SFC repair the file but the error returns, investigate deeper system damage.

Possible causes include:

  • A failing drive or filesystem corruption.
  • An update that repeatedly fails.
  • Security software repeatedly quarantining the file.
  • Malware.
  • A manually copied file with the wrong architecture.
  • A damaged Windows installation.

Back up important files first. Then consider these options:

Check the disk and filesystem

Run a storage-health check using the drive manufacturer’s supported tools. You can also open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

chkdsk C: /scan

Change C: if Windows is installed on another drive. If it reports serious errors, address storage problems before repeatedly repairing Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use System Restore

If the problem began after a recent software installation or system change:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  6. Review affected programs and complete the wizard.

System Restore is not available on every computer and does not replace a backup.

Perform an in-place repair installation

If Windows remains unstable after component repair, an in-place repair installation using matching official Windows installation media can refresh system components while typically preserving personal files and applications. Read the available options carefully and back up data first. Choose the option that preserves files and applications only when it is offered and appropriate for your installation.

If the computer cannot boot, displays multiple system-file errors, or shows signs of malware or failing storage, stop experimenting with individual DLLs and use Windows recovery or professional support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not download or manually register repdrvfs.dll

Do not download repdrvfs.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, wbem, or an application folder. The file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or fail because the real problem is a damaged dependency or component store.

Use these official sources instead:

  • Windows Update.
  • DISM using the local component store or matching official installation media.
  • SFC.
  • Windows recovery and in-place repair options.
  • The affected application’s official repair or installation process.

regsvr32 is generally not appropriate here. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified Microsoft instruction requiring manual registration of repdrvfs.dll. Running:

regsvr32 repdrvfs.dll

may produce an entry-point or architecture error and does not repair the Windows component.

Frequently asked questions

Is repdrvfs.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows WMI component. Its expected Windows location is normally %WINDIR%System32Wbem. A file with the same name elsewhere is not automatically genuine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is repdrvfs.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?

No. It belongs to Windows WMI. Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not the default solution.

Should I copy the file from another Windows computer?

No. Windows builds, editions, architectures, and servicing states differ. Repair the installed Windows component store with DISM and SFC instead.

Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file is present?

The message can refer to a dependency required by the DLL. It can also indicate a wrong-architecture file, corruption, or an application-specific loading problem. Check the signature and path, then run DISM and SFC.

Should I reset WMI immediately?

No. First repair Windows files. Use winmgmt /verifyrepository only when the symptoms suggest WMI repository corruption, and reserve salvage or reset for an indicated WMI problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if SFC says it cannot repair repdrvfs.dll?

Run DISM again, rerun SFC, inspect CBS.log, and consider matching installation media or an in-place repair installation. Also check for storage errors and repeated antivirus quarantine.

Will Windows Features reinstall this DLL?

There is usually no separate optional feature that should be toggled to restore this protected WMI file. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC rather than disabling and re-enabling unrelated Windows features.

What is the safest fix for a program that still fails?

Repair Windows first. If only one application fails afterward, use that application’s official repair or reinstall process. If several applications or Windows operations fail, prioritize Windows servicing, malware checks, and storage health.
