resample.dll is missing when the application that owns the file cannot load its multimedia component. The safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall that application, not to copy a replacement DLL into Windows.
One documented resample.dll belongs to Pegasys Resample/DirectShow Decode Filter, an old 32-bit multimedia component associated with Pegasys software such as TMPGEnc Sound Player. However, resample.dll is not a unique Windows filename. Musicmatch, dBpoweramp-related software, and other applications have also used the same basename.
First, identify which application needs resample.dll
Before changing Windows files, record four details:
- The name of the application showing the error.
- The complete error message.
- The full path to the application’s executable.
- Whether
resample.dllexists beside that executable.
Common messages include:
Could not load resample.dll: The specified module could not be found.couldn't load resample.dllThis application has failed to start because resample.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.resample.dll is missingresample.dll was not designed to run on Windows
To find the executable path:
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
- Note the folder containing the
.exe.
If the program is already running:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Open Task Manager.
- Right-click the application under Processes.
- Select Open file location.
Search that folder for resample.dll. Do not begin by searching C:WindowsSystem32 or downloading a file with the same name.

Check the file’s identity
If you find a copy beside the application:
- Right-click
resample.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Record File description, Product name, Company, and File version.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
The documented Pegasys file has these identifying details:
- Description or internal name:
Resample - Company: Pegasys
- Product:
Pegasys Resample/DirectShow Decode Filter - File version:
1.1.0.0 - File version string:
1.1.0 - Size:
172,032bytes - Architecture: 32-bit
WIN32
Those values identify one historical Pegasys binary. They do not prove that every resample.dll belongs to Pegasys.
A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit application through WOW64. That does not make a 64-bit replacement appropriate. Match the DLL to the application that shipped it.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
This is the primary fix when the error appears after uninstalling a component, updating the program, cleaning its folder, moving it, or restoring it from backup.

- Press
Windows+I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some desktop installers provide repair elsewhere:
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
If the program has a built-in Verify files, Restore, or Repair installation command, use that instead of manually replacing the DLL.
Reinstall from a trusted installer
If repair is unavailable:
- Back up the application’s settings or projects.
- Uninstall the affected program from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original licensed installer or the current installer supplied by the software publisher.
- Install the same application edition and architecture where possible.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the program before restoring custom files.
For discontinued Pegasys software, the publisher routes older-product downloads through its account-based download area. Use the installer associated with the original product or the publisher’s official support process. Do not assume that any modern Pegasys download contains this old component.
Confirm the result
The repair worked if:
- The original application starts without the error.
- The application can open or process the media that previously failed.
- A new
resample.dllappears in the application’s own installation directory. - The file’s Properties information matches the application rather than an unrelated product.
If reinstalling does not restore the file, check antivirus quarantine before trying other repairs.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software may remove or quarantine a DLL after an update, cleanup operation, or scan.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event naming
resample.dllor the affected application. - Expand the event and inspect the file path.
Only restore the file when all of these are true:
- It came from the application’s trusted installer.
- The path belongs to the affected application.
- The application vendor is known.
- The file is not an arbitrary download.
- A current security scan does not identify a broader infection.
If you restore a quarantined file, update the application and run a full scan. A repeated quarantine event may indicate that the installation is damaged or that the file is not the correct binary.
If the file was removed, reinstall the owning application instead of copying the quarantined file from another computer.
Fix 3: Restore the exact file from the application installer
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
Manual copying is appropriate only when the source is trusted and the file belongs to the identical application installation.
Acceptable sources include:
- The original installer for the same application.
- A repair operation from that installer.
- An identical, working installation of the same application edition.
Copy the file into the application’s own directory, beside the executable that loads it. Do not place it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 merely because a website recommends it.

- Right-click each file.
- Select Properties.
- Compare the Details values.
- Confirm that both files came from the same application and installer generation.
- Check whether both applications are 32-bit or 64-bit.
A filename match is not enough. An unrelated resample.dll can have different exports, dependencies, architecture, security properties, or expected configuration.
Restart Windows after restoring the file and test the application. If the error changes from “not found” to “could not load,” the file may now be present but incompatible, or one of its dependencies may still be missing.
Fix 4: Investigate a dependent DLL
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that resample.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the named DLL but fail to load one of the DLLs it depends on.
This is especially important when:
resample.dllis visibly beside the application executable.- The file’s architecture matches the application.
- Reinstalling did not change the message.
- The error appears after moving the program to another computer.
- The application is an old DirectShow or multimedia program.
Start with the application’s installer. Reinstalling the complete program restores its expected dependencies and configuration more reliably than adding individual runtime files.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables or DirectX solely because the missing item ends in .dll. There is no verified evidence that either package restores the documented Pegasys resample.dll.
If you need deeper diagnosis, collect the application path, the exact error, the file’s Properties information, and any Event Viewer entry. Dependency analysis should be performed with a reputable diagnostic utility by someone who understands 32-bit and 64-bit loading. Do not replace every DLL named by a diagnostic result.
Fix 5: Check Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatibility
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
The documented Pegasys component is old. A current Windows installation may run the parent application differently from the environment for which it was built.
Try the application’s compatibility settings:
- Right-click the application’s
.exeor shortcut. - Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try an older Windows version associated with the application.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application again.
You can also run the troubleshooter:
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Apply the recommended setting.
- Test the application.
Compatibility mode cannot recreate a missing third-party DLL. If the file is absent, repair or reinstall the owning application first.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the program remains unreliable, use the latest available version from its publisher or move to a supported replacement. There is no verified Windows 10 or Windows 11-specific Pegasys fix that makes an unrelated replacement DLL correct.
Fix 6: Check Windows N media components
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. This is relevant when the application reports additional missing Windows media components, such as MFPlat.dll, or fails with broader media-framework errors.
To install Media Feature Pack:
- Press
Windows+I. - Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it.
- Choose Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows.
On some Windows versions, the feature is listed directly under Optional features. Install the package that matches the installed Windows edition.
Media Feature Pack supplies Windows media components. It is not a source for the old Pegasys resample.dll. If only resample.dll is missing, reinstall the application that owns it.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
Use this step when Windows itself is unstable, several built-in files are failing, or the application error appeared alongside broader system corruption. It is a lower-probability explanation for a third-party Pegasys DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component image. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Neither command normally recreates a third-party resample.dll that was removed from an application folder.
Repeating these commands without checking what changed can make troubleshooting unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds before its full version performs repairs, which may reduce the guesswork of repeatedly running SFC and DISM. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
For Microsoft’s command guidance, see Microsoft’s Windows image repair documentation.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Drivers are not a demonstrated cause of the documented Pegasys resample.dll error. Do not begin by replacing graphics, sound, or chipset drivers unless the application also shows device errors, playback failures, or a recent driver change.
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Expand Display adapters if the error involves video.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Do not uninstall a working device simply because resample.dll is missing. A driver update will not supply a Pegasys application DLL.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and show what needs attention, avoiding the task of identifying the correct package among many hardware versions; its full version performs the driver installation. Use this only when device symptoms support a driver problem, because reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix for its missing resample.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points, such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not run:
regsvr32 resample.dll
unless the application’s vendor documentation specifically requires registration of that exact file.
There is no verified public evidence that the historical Pegasys resample.dll must be registered manually. Its product name mentions a DirectShow decode filter, but that does not establish the correct registration behavior.

A “missing entry point” or “module failed to load” result from regsvr32 does not mean the DLL has been fixed. For Microsoft’s description of the command, see regsvr32 documentation.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid public DLL download sites repositories and search results offering an isolated resample.dll. They may provide:
- The wrong vendor’s file.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A different version with incompatible dependencies.
- A modified or malicious file.
- A file that does not match the application’s installer.
Even a clean file with the correct name may not fix the missing dependency or application configuration that caused the error.
Use the application’s repair function, its original licensed installer, or the software publisher’s official support and download process. For discontinued Pegasys applications, the correct recovery path is the publisher’s discontinued-product access process, not a generic DLL repository.
Likely causes of the error
| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| The application was incompletely installed or damaged | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Check Protection history, then reinstall from a trusted installer |
An unrelated resample.dll was copied into the folder |
Remove it and restore the exact application file |
| A dependent DLL is missing | Reinstall the full application and its documented prerequisites |
| The old application is incompatible with current Windows | Try compatibility settings or use a supported replacement |
| Windows N lacks media components | Install Media Feature Pack when related Windows media errors are present |
| Windows system files are damaged | Run DISM, then SFC, and restart |
resample.dll is a basename collision. The Pegasys identity applies to one documented historical file, not to every copy found on a computer.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Collect this information before making further changes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- The exact error text.
- The name and full path of the executable.
- The location of
resample.dll, if present. - Company, product, version, and size from Properties.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The Windows edition, including whether it is Windows N.
- Any antivirus quarantine event.
- The Event Viewer error, if one was logged.
- Whether the problem began after an update, cleanup, uninstall, restore, or file move.
Then contact the application publisher or use its supported installation media. If resample.dll exists beside the executable but still will not load, suspect a dependent DLL, architecture mismatch, damaged installer, or application-specific configuration rather than immediately copying another file.
FAQ
Is resample.dll a Windows system file?
No. The documented Pegasys copy is an application component. It should not normally be installed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Does every resample.dll belong to Pegasys?
No. The filename has been used by more than one application. Identify the owning executable, folder, company, and product details before choosing a repair.
Can 64-bit Windows run the Pegasys file?
Yes. The documented Pegasys file is 32-bit, and 64-bit Windows can run many 32-bit applications through WOW64. A 64-bit replacement is not automatically correct.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I download resample.dll separately?
No. Restore it through the application’s installer or repair process. A random replacement can be the wrong file, architecture, or version and may introduce security risks.
Will SFC restore resample.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It generally does not restore a third-party Pegasys DLL from an application directory.
Should I register resample.dll with regsvr32?
Not routinely. Use regsvr32 only when the application’s vendor documentation explicitly requires registration of that file.
What if the file exists but Windows says it cannot load it?
The message may refer to a missing dependency rather than the file itself. Reinstall the complete owning application, verify its architecture, and investigate dependencies only after confirming the file is the correct one.
Does Media Feature Pack fix resample.dll?
No. Media Feature Pack is relevant to Windows N systems when Windows media components such as MFPlat.dll are also missing. It does not provide the old Pegasys DLL.
