The safest repair is to restore Windows components with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
What this file actually does
wiaservc.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system file named Still Image Devices Service. It is part of Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, which allows applications and WIA minidrivers to communicate with scanners, cameras, and other still-image hardware.
Microsoft describes WIA as a service-based imaging architecture. An application sends an image-acquisition request to WIA, and WIA communicates with the appropriate device driver or minidriver. The related Windows service is Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), whose service name is StiSvc. The service normally runs through svchost.exe, rather than appearing as a standalone program.

This file is:
- A Windows component published by Microsoft
- Related to scanners, cameras, and image acquisition
- Not a Visual C++ Redistributable file
- Not a DirectX file
- Not a .NET component
- Not normally a third-party application DLL
- Not something you should routinely register with
regsvr32
On supported Windows installations, the normal 64-bit system copy is associated with %WinDir%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components may be associated with %WinDir%SysWOW64. These folder names can be confusing: System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system files.
A copy in an unexpected application folder, a temporary directory, or a user-download directory deserves additional checking. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. Check its path and Microsoft digital signature before trusting it.
Why the error wording varies
You may see any of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because wiaservc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “wiaservc.dll was not found.”
- “wiaservc.dll is corrupted.”
- “wiaservc.dll file could not be loaded.”
- “wiaservc.dll file cannot be loaded. Module was not found.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly because wiaservc.dll was not found.”
- “wiaservc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording depends on Windows, the calling application, and the point at which loading failed. “Module was not found” does not always mean that wiaservc.dll itself is absent. It can also mean that a dependency, driver, or related component could not be loaded.
Causes and symptoms

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
An incomplete update can leave system components in an inconsistent state. Start with the least invasive repair.

- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if Windows Update does not insist on a restart.
- Test the program, scanner, or camera again.
On Windows 10, the update page is under Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not skip those commands simply because Windows Update completed successfully.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary fix when wiaservc.dll is genuinely missing or corrupted. DISM repairs the Windows component store first. SFC then uses that repaired store to restore protected Windows files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress appears to pause at times.
DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source. When it completes, look for a message indicating that the restore operation completed successfully.
Run SFC after DISM
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after the scan, then test the affected program again.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance specifically recommends running DISM before SFC.

SFC did not find corruption in protected Windows files. The problem may instead involve the WIA service, a scanner driver, a dependency, or one application.

Restart Windows and retry the operation. If the error is gone, the protected system file was probably the immediate problem.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them
Run DISM again if necessary, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still cannot repair the files, inspect the CBS log and move to the recovery steps later in this guide. Persistent failure can indicate component-store damage, disk problems, malware, or an unsupported Windows installation.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows Update may itself be damaged. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess; the source must match the installed Windows version and architecture.
Manually tracking down a damaged component and repeating DISM and SFC can become tedious, especially when several protected files are involved. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its repair actions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a substitute for Microsoft recovery when Windows is seriously damaged.
Fix 3: Check the Windows Image Acquisition service
If the file exists but scanner or camera software still fails, check WIA itself.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) in the list.
- Check the Status column.
- Double-click the service to inspect its configuration.
If the service is stopped:
- Set Startup type to the setting already used by your installation unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the scanner or camera application.
If the service is running but the application cannot use the device:

- Select Restart if that option is available.
- Close and reopen the imaging application.
- Disconnect and reconnect a USB scanner or camera.
- Test again.
A WIA service that starts and immediately stops can point to a driver, dependency, permissions, or Windows-component problem. Do not assume that replacing wiaservc.dll will repair the service configuration.
You can also check the service from an elevated Command Prompt:
sc query StiSvc
A running service should report a running state. If the command reports that the service does not exist, or if it repeatedly fails to start, use DISM and SFC before considering broader Windows recovery.

Fix 4: Determine whether the failure is Windows-wide
The next useful question is whether every imaging application fails or only one program.

Test more than one appropriate application, if available:
- Windows Scan
- Fax and Scan
- Paint’s scanner or camera import function
- The scanner manufacturer’s utility
- The camera application
- Another program that accesses the same device
The result changes the repair path:
- If several programs fail, focus on Windows, WIA, the device driver, and connectivity.
- If only the manufacturer’s utility fails, repair or reinstall that utility.
- If only one older application fails, check its architecture and compatibility before changing Windows.
- If the application starts but cannot find the device, the DLL may have loaded successfully and the actual problem may be the driver, service, USB connection, network path, or vendor software.
A message naming wiaservc.dll is not proof that this file alone controls the entire scanner stack.
Fix 5: Reinstall or roll back the scanner or camera driver
Use this branch when the error started after connecting a device, installing imaging software, updating a driver, or changing USB hardware.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Cameras, Imaging devices, Printers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or another category used by the hardware.
- Right-click the affected scanner or camera.
- Select Properties and check the General and Driver tabs.
- If Windows identifies a problem, note the device name and status.
- Right-click the device again and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the device if it is external.
- Let Windows Update install a compatible driver.
- If Windows does not install one, download the current driver from the scanner or camera manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart again and test WIA applications.
Microsoft’s Device Manager driver guidance covers updating, removing, reinstalling, and rolling back drivers.
If the problem started immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties → Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when Windows makes that option available. Do not install a driver intended for a different Windows architecture or device model.
Finding the right imaging driver manually can mean comparing model numbers, architectures, and several vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the driver work involved; installation through the full version is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the authoritative choice for unusual or business hardware.
Fix 6: Repair the affected application
If only one program reports the error and Windows Scan or another imaging application works, the application installation is the stronger suspect.

- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset if you accept that the app may lose local settings or stored data.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Select Change, Repair, or a similarly named option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and install a current version from its official publisher. Back up application settings first if the program stores profiles or device presets.
An application may display a DLL name even when its own files or dependencies are damaged. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a general repair for this Windows WIA component.
Fix 7: Check antivirus Protection History
If the error appeared after malware cleanup, an antivirus scan, or a security-product update, check whether Windows Security quarantined the file.

- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry that names
wiaservc.dll. - Check the original path, detection details, and action taken.
Do not restore a quarantined file merely because its filename is genuine. Restore or allow it only after verifying that the original path was the expected Windows directory and that the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature. If the path was a random application or temporary folder, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Microsoft explains these decisions in its Protection History guidance. Allowing an unsafe file can expose the device, so when in doubt, repair the protected Windows component instead of overriding the detection.

Do not use a file inventory or an error page as a reason to choose a replacement DLL by version number. Windows servicing, editions, language components, and architecture affect the installed build.
Examples reported by independent inventories include 32-bit and 64-bit builds from older Windows releases, including:

These are examples from file inventories, not a complete or current Microsoft catalog. Do not select a replacement based on a matching size.
To check a suspicious copy:
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to the file’s reported location.
- Right-click
wiaservc.dll. - Select Properties.
- Review the General and Details tabs.
- Open Digital Signatures if available.
- Check that the signer is Microsoft and that the path is appropriate for a Windows system file.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may interact with 32-bit system components. Never substitute a 64-bit DLL for a 32-bit one, or the reverse. The correct repair is to let Windows restore the matching protected files.
Do not download or manually copy this DLL
Avoid random DLL download sites sites and copied files from forums, file shares, or another computer. A replacement can contain malware, match the wrong Windows release, use the wrong architecture, lack the correct signature, or fail to repair the underlying component store.
Manual copying also bypasses Windows servicing and protection mechanisms. Copying a file from another installation can create a new mismatch rather than fixing the original error. Microsoft’s manual system-file replacement procedure is an advanced last resort that requires a known-good file from the same Windows version.
Do not copy wiaservc.dll into an application folder to force a program to start. That can make troubleshooting harder and can cause Windows to load an inappropriate copy.

wiaservc.dll is a Windows WIA component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX library, or .NET assembly. Installing those packages may be appropriate for a separate error naming one of their files, but it is not a general fix for this DLL.
Routine regsvr32 use is also inappropriate. regsvr32 registers DLLs that are designed to expose registration information through DllRegisterServer. It does not repair a missing Windows component, rebuild the WIA service, or replace corrupted protected files. Microsoft documents the tool’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 documentation, but registering wiaservc.dll is not the normal repair step.

Similarly, Settings → System → Optional features and Windows Features are not where you normally reinstall WIA. Do not disable or enable unrelated features hoping to recreate this system file. Repair Windows itself first.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began soon after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup utility, or application installation and a restore point exists.

- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal documents. It does not replace a backup. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 10: Repair or reinstall Windows when repairs fail
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, or the error returns repeatedly, back up important files before continuing. Repeated corruption can point to disk or filesystem damage, malware, or a Windows installation that is no longer supportable.
On Windows 11, when the option is available:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This process can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when Microsoft presents those options.
If that option is unavailable, consider System Restore, manufacturer recovery media, or Windows installation media. Read every recovery screen carefully and back up personal data first. A full reset or clean installation is a final step, not the first response to one missing system file.

Is wiaservc.dll safe or malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component named Still Image Devices Service. A file with that name in an unexpected directory is not automatically safe. Verify its location and Microsoft digital signature, and investigate antivirus detections before restoring it.
Is this file a scanner driver?
Not exactly. It is part of the Windows Image Acquisition service architecture. The scanner or camera still requires a compatible device driver, and the vendor’s software may add another layer.
Where should wiaservc.dll be located?
It is normally associated with the Windows directory, commonly %WinDir%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components may use %WinDir%SysWOW64. Do not treat those folders as interchangeable and do not choose a replacement based only on the filename.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually no. Those packages are separate from the Windows WIA component. Start with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC unless the error also names a runtime file belonging to one of those platforms.
Should I run regsvr32 wiaservc.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed for COM or similar registration. It is not the standard way to restore this protected Windows component.
Why does the message say “module was not found” when the file exists?
The named DLL may have loaded far enough for Windows to identify it, while one of its dependencies, a driver, or another required module failed. Check WIA, Device Manager, the application installation, and system integrity.
What information should I record before asking for help?
Record the exact error text, Windows version, affected application, whether other imaging applications work, the file path, whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit, recent updates or driver changes, the WIA service status, and the final DISM and SFC results. This separates a Windows-wide failure from a scanner driver or single-application problem.
