Resident Evil 2 Endings Explained: Original A/B Scenarios vs. the 2019 Remake

Yes, Resident Evil 2 has multiple story routes, but the answer depends on the release. The 1998 original uses Leon and Claire A/B scenarios tied together by Capcom’s “Zapping System.” The 2019 remake replaces that system with separate Leon and Claire campaigns plus an unlockable “2nd run” for the other character. Official guides describe these as different scenario structures, not as a definitive numbered list of endings, so there is no reliable official total to quote for either release.

Spoiler warning: This article explains how the routes and unlocks work. It avoids listing every final scene, but even the route structure can reveal how the game is organized.

Resident Evil 2’s ending question has two different answers

When someone asks whether Resident Evil 2 has multiple endings, first identify the game they own. “Resident Evil 2” can mean the original released in 1998 or the 2019 remake. They share characters, locations and major story beats, but their route systems are not the same.

Release How the routes work What changes between routes
1998 original Leon and Claire each have A and B scenarios connected by the Zapping System. Some events, details, item access and consequences in one character’s scenario can affect the other character’s scenario.
2019 remake Leon and Claire have separate campaigns. Completing one unlocks the other character’s 2nd Run. The 2nd Run changes puzzle arrangements, weapon availability and story flow rather than simply replaying the first route.

Capcom’s explanation of the remake is explicit: it removed the original Zapping System and gave Leon and Claire their own campaigns presenting a comprehensive story. You can read that distinction in Capcom’s 2018 Resident Evil 2 development article and the producer interview at Capcom’s developer-interview page.

How the 1998 original’s A and B scenarios work

Choosing a character creates an A scenario

In the original, your first choice is Leon or Claire. That character’s campaign is treated as an A scenario. After finishing it, you can begin the other character’s B scenario. The B route is not simply the same campaign with a different playable character: it is designed to account for what happened in the A route and to show related events from another perspective.

Capcom describes the original as having shared main-story elements while changing details, events and item access according to which character was selected first. In practical terms, two players can see the same broad crisis unfold but encounter different sequences, equipment placement and character interactions because their A/B order is different.

The Zapping System links the two campaigns

The defining feature is the “Zapping System.” Actions made in one character’s campaign can affect portions of the other character’s campaign. The system was meant to make the two scenarios feel like parallel stories taking place during the same outbreak rather than two unrelated playthroughs.

That connection is why the original is often described as having multiple endings, even though “ending” can mean different things to different players. A and B are distinct scenario routes with altered details and an interdependent order. They are not four completely independent stories in the modern branching-game sense, and the official material does not publish a definitive numbered count of every possible ending variation.

Why your play order matters

If you play Leon first, Claire’s B scenario is framed as the follow-up to Leon’s A scenario. If you play Claire first, Leon’s B scenario fills the equivalent role. The second campaign can therefore contain different context, item access and event timing from the first campaign.

For the fullest original experience, play one character’s A scenario and then the other character’s B scenario. You can reverse the order on another playthrough to see how the alternate pairing changes the connected narrative. Treat A/B as a linked two-campaign structure, not as a promise that every route ends with a wholly unique finale.

How the 2019 remake handles multiple routes

Leon and Claire have separate campaigns

The remake does not carry over the original’s Zapping System. Instead, Leon and Claire each have a complete campaign. Capcom producer Tsuyoshi Kanda summarized the change this way: “In the 2019 version, instead of this, Leon and Claire will have their own campaigns that present a comprehensive story.” The statement appears in Capcom’s 2018 interview.

That means selecting Leon or Claire is not choosing a simple character skin over one shared campaign. Each route has its own scenes, supporting characters, objectives and progression. You should finish the first campaign before judging the game’s complete story, because the second character’s route supplies additional perspective and information.

What “1st Run” and “2nd Run” mean

The first campaign you start is commonly presented as that character’s 1st Run. After completing it, the game unlocks a 2nd Run option for the other character. The 2nd Run is the remake’s answer to the original’s B scenario: it revisits the same general incident from the other character’s viewpoint while altering the route through the police station and later areas.

PlayStation’s official survival guide describes the mode as the other character’s side of the story with adjusted puzzles, new weapons and a different story flow. It is therefore more than a cosmetic replay, but it is also not advertised by the official guide as a completely separate game with an independently enumerated ending set. The practical instruction is in PlayStation’s Resident Evil 2 survival guide.

How to unlock and start 2nd Run

  1. Complete either Leon’s or Claire’s campaign.
  2. Return to the main menu and select Story.
  3. Choose 2nd run.
  4. Select the other character to begin that character’s alternate route.

The exact menu wording can vary slightly by platform language, but the route is Story mode, then 2nd Run, after one campaign is finished. Starting a new ordinary game is not the same as selecting 2nd Run; use the dedicated menu option if you want the altered scenario.

What changes in the remake’s 2nd Run

  • Different opening circumstances: the second character enters the crisis through a different sequence.
  • Adjusted puzzles: several puzzle solutions and arrangements are changed, so notes or routes from the first campaign may not apply.
  • Different equipment: the mode introduces altered weapon availability and resource planning.
  • Changed story flow: scenes and progression are reordered to show the other side of events.
  • Additional context: the route fills in parts of the overall narrative that the first campaign leaves from another character’s perspective.

Because the remake’s two campaigns overlap in locations and broad events, some sections will feel familiar. The changed route, puzzles and story timing are what make 2nd Run a distinct playthrough rather than a duplicate save file.

Does the remake have four, two or another exact number of endings?

It is tempting to turn the character choices and A/B terminology into a simple number, but the official sources do not establish a definitive total for all ending scenes or variations. They document the scenario structure: the original’s A/B routes and Zapping System, and the remake’s separate campaigns with 2nd Run.

That distinction matters because a campaign route is not automatically a wholly separate ending. Two routes can converge on major conclusions while changing the journey, scenes, item access or perspective. Conversely, small scenario differences can make a player remember a route as a different ending even when the final outcome is closely related.

The safest accurate answer to “How many endings does Resident Evil 2 have?” is therefore: multiple scenario outcomes and route variations, with the exact count depending on the release and on what you classify as an ending. A precise number should only be used when a game-specific reference lists every final scene and clearly identifies whether it is discussing the 1998 original, the 2019 remake or a particular scenario pair. The official Capcom and PlayStation materials cited here do not provide that enumeration.

Why the original and remake should not be counted the same way

The original is built around interdependent scenarios

The 1998 design assumes that Leon and Claire’s campaigns can affect one another. Capcom’s descriptions emphasize shared story elements and changes caused by which character you play first. The Tyrant’s appearance is one example of how scenario structure differs: a Capcom-authored interview hosted by PlayStation notes that the Tyrant appeared only in Scenario B in the original and explains that the remake changed the Tyrant’s objective. See the Capcom interview on PlayStation Blog.

That evidence supports calling the original’s A and B campaigns meaningfully different routes. It does not prove a fixed number of independent endings, because the published interview does not list every conclusion or variation.

The remake is built around complete character campaigns

The 2019 version reorganizes the same broad premise around two self-contained campaigns and a 2nd Run option. Its routes are best understood as complementary perspectives: completing both gives the most complete account of the remake’s story, while the second route changes enough gameplay and sequencing to justify another playthrough.

Do not assume that the remake’s 2nd Run is a direct technical equivalent of the original’s B scenario. The names describe similar replay purposes, but the underlying systems differ. The remake lacks the original’s cross-campaign Zapping System, and Capcom presents the two campaigns as its replacement.

Which play order is best?

If you are playing the 1998 original

Choose whichever character you prefer for the A scenario, then play the other character’s B scenario. If you want to compare how the connection works, repeat the game with the opposite character first. Keep separate saves if you want to preserve both A/B orders without overwriting progress.

If you are playing the 2019 remake

Play either Leon or Claire first, then use Story mode’s 2nd Run option for the other character. There is no evidence in the official guidance that one first choice is required to unlock the other route; the important requirement is completing one campaign before selecting 2nd Run.

Use the second run as a fresh route rather than relying on your first-run map memory. Adjusted puzzles and equipment mean that a safe room plan, key-item route or weapon strategy from the first campaign may not transfer directly.

Bottom line on Resident Evil 2 endings

Both major releases offer more than one route through the story. The 1998 original has linked Leon and Claire A/B scenarios powered by the Zapping System. The 2019 remake has separate Leon and Claire campaigns, with the other character’s 2nd Run unlocked after completing the first campaign. Those are genuine route and story variations, but the official sources do not support assigning either release a single definitive numbered ending count.
