Capcom’s 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake is available as a universal Apple App Store app for Mac, iPhone and iPad. It is free to download, but the complete game is an in-app purchase. The Apple release arrived on December 10, 2024—not recently—and it only supports relatively new Apple hardware: A17 Pro-or-newer iPhones, M-series or A17 Pro iPads, and M1-or-newer Macs.
Which Resident Evil 2 is on Apple devices?
This is the modern third-person remake released in 2019, not the original 1998 PlayStation game, the 2002 Resident Evil remake, or an emulated and cloud-streamed edition. Capcom’s remake follows Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield through the Raccoon City outbreak with over-the-shoulder combat, redesigned locations and expanded scenarios. Its survival-horror design emphasizes exploration, scarce resources and limited inventory.

The Apple listing is published by CAPCOM Co., Ltd. Capcom’s overview describes the remake’s campaigns, Second Run, Hardcore mode and bonus modes including The 4th Survivor and Tofu Survivor: Capcom’s official Resident Evil 2 overview.
Release date and current status
The Mac, iPhone and iPad version launched on December 10, 2024. As of August 18, 2026, it is an established App Store release rather than a new launch. The original “just launched” wording is therefore only accurate in historical coverage.

Price and purchase model
The U.S. App Store currently shows the download as free, with the full base game available as a $39.99 in-app purchase. It also lists an optional $4.99 “All In-game Rewards Unlocked” purchase. The rewards add-on is not required to play the story or access the base game.

Compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac models
The chip requirement matters more than the product name or a recent operating-system version.

iPhone
The listing includes iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, the iPhone 16 family (including 16e), and newer compatible generations such as the iPhone 17-series and iPhone Air models shown by Apple. A standard iPhone 15 or any earlier iPhone without A17 Pro is not supported, even if it runs a recent iOS release.

Compatible iPad Pro and iPad Air generations are those with an M-series chip, while the A17 Pro iPad mini also qualifies. “iPad Pro” or “iPad Air” by itself is not enough; check the generation and processor.
Mac
Intel Macs do not meet the stated requirement. To check yours, choose Apple menu → About This Mac. The chip line must say Apple M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 or a later Apple-silicon generation, and the Mac must be on macOS 13 or newer. The requirement does not guarantee identical performance, image quality, heat or battery behavior across models.

Storage, downloads and connection requirements
The Mac App Store listing displays approximately 22.1 GB; the iPhone/iPad listing displays approximately 733.8 MB. Those figures are storefront package sizes, not a promise of the final installed footprint. Delivery packages, downloaded content, updates, save data and system overhead can change the space required, so leave substantial free storage before installing—especially on a Mac with a nearly full drive or an iPhone with limited capacity.
Launch-era App Store information illustrated download times from roughly 8–10 minutes at 300 Mbps to more than six hours at 10 Mbps. Treat those as examples, not a current guarantee; Wi-Fi congestion, server conditions and your connection affect the result. The listing has also stated that a network connection is required when starting the app. Later user reports claimed that Capcom changed this behavior, but there is no sufficiently clear current first-party confirmation to promise offline launching. Install and test the game before relying on it during travel.
Purchases, accounts and save transfer
One Apple app does not automatically mean one universal entitlement
The release is presented as one Apple app spanning Mac, iPhone and iPad, but downloading the app, buying the base-game entitlement and transferring saves are separate questions. Capcom’s iOS FAQ explains how the full game is obtained on iOS. Check the in-app purchase screen while signed in to your Apple Account before assuming that a purchase made on one device has unlocked every other version.

The App Store listing says in-app purchases can only be used by the Apple Account that made them and cannot be shared with Family Sharing members. Treat Apple, Steam, PlayStation and Xbox ownership as separate; an Apple purchase does not unlock those other platform versions.
Apple-device save transfer
Storefront information describes uploading and downloading save data between macOS and iOS devices, and launch coverage reported cross-progression across supported Apple devices. This should be understood as Apple-device save transfer, not cross-save with consoles or PC. Use the same Apple Account, enable the game’s save-transfer function and verify a test upload/download before switching devices. It should not be treated as guaranteed real-time synchronization.

The App Store marks Resident Evil 2 as Controller Supported. A Bluetooth or USB-C gamepad is the sensible choice for extended play, particularly on an iPhone. Touch controls may be available, but the supplied listing does not establish that every control layout, haptic feature or controller model behaves identically on every Apple device.

The Apple release is the full remake rather than a simple video or demo. You get Leon and Claire’s main campaigns, the Raccoon City Police Department and surrounding locations, resource-management survival horror, and the remake’s associated challenge and bonus content. The exact Apple build and unlock conditions determine when bonus modes become available. Do not assume that every Deluxe Edition cosmetic or other console DLC item is included unless the current Apple listing explicitly identifies it.
Installation checklist
- Open the official RESIDENT EVIL 2 App Store page.
- Confirm that your exact device appears as compatible and meets the chip and OS requirement.
- Check available internal storage, allowing more room than the displayed package size.
- Download the free app and launch it.
- Review the in-app purchase options and buy the Resident Evil 2 base game if you want the complete title.
- Ignore the $4.99 rewards unlock unless you specifically want that optional add-on.
- Pair a supported controller for mobile play.
- Set up and test save upload/download before moving between Mac, iPhone and iPad.
- Do not expect the Apple purchase to unlock Steam, PlayStation or Xbox editions.

For an Apple user with qualifying hardware, the release offers a convenient portable way to play the complete remake. It is less compelling if you already own the game elsewhere, have an incompatible device or primarily want the lowest-cost version.
Alternatives outside Apple
A gaming PC may be preferable for broader graphics settings and conventional PC storefront ownership; the official Steam listing is Resident Evil 2 on Steam. PlayStation and Xbox versions remain alternatives for people who already own those consoles and prefer television play. Their current prices and feature differences are not established here.
Bottom line
Resident Evil 2 is available on Mac, iPhone and iPad, but “free” means free to download—not free to play in full. Buy it primarily if you already have supported Apple hardware, enough storage and a controller, and you value portable play or Apple-device save transfer. The A17 Pro, M-series and M1 requirements exclude many otherwise recent Apple devices.
