As of August 18, 2026, Apple ships the Games app with iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe. It is a game-focused hub for discovery, launching, libraries, friends and Game Center features—not a second App Store or an independent marketplace.
What Apple actually built
Apple describes Games as an all-in-one destination for finding and playing games, returning to recent titles, following friends, viewing achievements and leaderboards, and accessing Apple Arcade. The app combines several existing Apple services behind a game-specific interface.

Is this a new App Store for games?
No. On iPhone and iPad, games in Games remain App Store products. Apple says every game available in the App Store on those platforms is available in the Games app. The app offers another way to find and open a title; it does not create a separate catalog, account system or payment mechanism.

That means Games does not replace the App Store, create a second iOS marketplace, or function as an Apple-controlled rival to Steam or the Epic Games Store. A game can be free, paid, ad-supported or use in-app purchases according to its existing App Store listing.
Mac behavior is broader. Apple says games obtained from outside the Mac App Store can appear in Continue Playing and Library, but that visibility does not mean Apple distributes those titles through its own store. Details are in the Apple Games FAQ.
What users can do in Games
Discover and search
Home provides personalized recommendations, editorial selections, top charts and in-game events. Search lets you look for a specific title without browsing the general App Store’s other categories.

Resume or redownload games
Continue Playing surfaces recent titles. Library shows games downloaded previously and can offer a route to redownload them. A Library entry does not necessarily mean the game is currently installed.
Use social and Game Center features
Friends displays supported friend activity. Depending on the game and its implementation, you can view achievements and leaderboards, invite friends to challenges, or join multiplayer activities. Games cannot add these capabilities retroactively; the title must support the relevant Game Center features.
Browse Apple Arcade
The Arcade tab is a dedicated entry point for Apple Arcade games and subscriptions. It is not a requirement for using Games or for playing ordinary App Store titles.

Play in landscape
On iPhone and iPad, the app supports landscape presentation in supported contexts, a useful arrangement when using a controller. Individual games still determine their own orientation and controller support.
Where it is available
Apple identifies Games as available on:
- iPhone with iOS 26 or later
- iPad with iPadOS 26 or later
- Mac with macOS Tahoe 26 or later
It is preinstalled on compatible devices running those systems; Apple also describes it as downloadable from the App Store. Hardware compatibility, regional catalogs and individual game requirements can make the experience different from one device to another. How Apple Arcade fits in
Apple Arcade is a paid service; Games is free software. Apple describes Arcade as a catalog of hundreds of games, including new releases and award winners, with no ads or in-app purchases within Arcade titles. That promise applies to the Apple Arcade catalog, not every game reachable through Games.

Arcade access works across supported iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV 4K devices. Availability varies by country or region, hardware, operating-system version and title. What developers get
Games creates additional discovery and re-engagement surfaces rather than a new payment channel. Apple highlights:
- In-App Events that can appear in both Games and the App Store
- Game Center achievements and leaderboards
- Challenges and supported multiplayer activities
- Recommendations, charts and editorial opportunities
These tools can help a developer reach new players, bring back people who have stopped playing and promote limited-time events. That is a reasonable strategic inference from the feature set, not a guaranteed revenue increase or an Apple-published forecast.

Why Apple launched it
Bloomberg’s May 27, 2025 report described the planned product as a launcher intended to centralize achievements, leaderboards, communications and other gaming activity. Apple has now shipped that broader destination. The likely strategic goals are to make games easier to discover than in a general marketplace, keep users engaged with games they already own, give Apple Arcade a prominent home and make Game Center more visible.
Those goals do not establish that Apple is launching a console or abandoning its App Store model. Bloomberg’s original report is available at Bloomberg.
Does Games compete with Steam, consoles or other stores?
Only in limited ways. Apple is competing for discovery by giving games their own presentation, and Apple Arcade participates in the broader subscription market. Games is not, by itself, a new marketplace competing with Steam or the Epic Games Store, nor does it turn Apple hardware into a dedicated console platform.
It remains dependent on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and other Apple hardware. The app also does not make Mac gaming equivalent to Windows gaming or guarantee that a title is available on every Apple device.

- Ordinary App Store games keep their existing ads and in-app purchases.
- Not every game supports achievements, leaderboards, challenges, multiplayer or controllers.
- Apple Arcade and Apple One are unavailable in some countries and regions, and catalogs differ by location.
- Prices, editorial selections, events and game availability can vary by Apple Account region.
- A Mac game shown from another source is not necessarily sold or managed by Apple.
- Operating-system eligibility does not guarantee identical features across compatible hardware.
How to use it
- Open Games and choose Home or Search to find titles.
- Choose Continue Playing or Library to resume or redownload games.
- Open Arcade to browse Apple Arcade and manage a subscription.
- Open Friends to view supported social activity.
- Open a game’s profile or Game Center activity to see available achievements, leaderboards or challenges.
Labels and feature availability can change between releases and vary by country, device and game.
The bottom line
Apple did build the dedicated gaming destination once reported as a rumor. The finished product is the Games app: a game-focused discovery, library and social layer over Apple’s existing services. It makes Apple’s gaming ecosystem easier to browse and gives Arcade and Game Center clearer homes, but it is not a new App Store, a separate iOS marketplace or a Steam-style independent store.
