Resident Evil 4 remake and DOOM (2016) pursue almost opposite forms of action. Resident Evil 4 remake combines aimed shooting with enemy pressure, limited resources, defensive knife parries, optional stealth and short periods of relief. Its encounters are built around choosing an opening and surviving a changing threat. DOOM (2016) puts speed, vertical movement, weapon handling, map flow and improvisation at the center, producing a more continuously action-forward rhythm. Neither description is a measured claim that one game is objectively faster: the comparison comes from the design goals described by the games’ developers.

Because “Doom” can mean several different games, this article uses DOOM (2016) for the direct comparison. DOOM Eternal is discussed only where its sequel-specific resource systems clarify the distinction.

At a glance: positioning versus momentum

Axis Resident Evil 4 remake DOOM (2016) Practical difference
Combat posture Aimed firearms, weak-point targeting, limited resources, knife parries, stealth and melee follow-ups. Fast movement, verticality, weapon feel, double jumping and improvisational action combat. RE4 asks you to manage threats and create openings; DOOM asks you to keep moving and convert weapons and space into opportunities.
Encounter rhythm Pressure rises through horror/action encounters, then gives way to short breaks and recovery. Combat and traversal are arranged to preserve forward action momentum, with speed and map flow as defining concerns. RE4 alternates peaks and respite; DOOM sustains a stronger action pulse.
Defensive choices Parry timing, repositioning, stealth and attacks on downed enemies add ways to reduce danger. Movement, jumps, vertical routes and weapon switching are the primary ways to stay alive. RE4’s flexibility includes defensive timing and concealment; DOOM’s flexibility is expressed through movement and rapid weapon use.
Resources Resource management and weapon upgrades remain core parts of combat. The 2016 game places health, armor and power-ups in the world; it does not use the exact replenishment loop associated with DOOM Eternal. RE4 makes scarcity and preparation part of the tension, while DOOM makes navigation and combat performance part of maintaining momentum.

This is a qualitative design comparison. The available developer statements do not provide a controlled test, encounter count, average completion time or other numerical pacing measurement.

Each game starts from a different design brief

Resident Evil 4 remake: preserve the rhythm, expand the options

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said the remake was not intended simply to accelerate combat. His stated goal was to respect the original’s tempo and contents while making the new combat more flexible. That distinction matters: a fight can offer more actions without becoming a nonstop sprint.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Director Yasuhiro Ampo identified aiming, shooting, resource management and weapon upgrades as core elements that received comparatively small changes. The remake therefore keeps the basic pressure of choosing when and where to fire, what to spend and which threat to address first. Changes to enemy behavior and level design were made alongside the control changes so that Leon’s added options would fit the intended tempo rather than erase it.

Hirabayashi summarized the direction as: Rather than faster, the combat is more flexible. That flexibility includes parries with the knife, stealth kills, attacks on downed enemies, weak-point shots that can create close-range attack opportunities and the quieter, recoverable Bolt Thrower. Those systems do not turn every encounter into a stealth puzzle or a melee brawl; they give you additional answers when direct shooting is costly or awkward.

DOOM (2016): make movement and weapons the action

DOOM (2016) was designed around speed, verticality, double jumping, weapon feel, map flow and the absence of weapon reloading. Co-director Marty Stratton described these elements as central to the game’s identity, along with health, armor and power-ups placed in the world. His broader principle was simple: Our guiding principles in making this Doom has been ‘keep it fun,’ because we’ve really focused on making it a game.

In this model, movement is not merely a way to travel between fights. It is part of the fight. Routes, elevation, jumps and the distance between the player and enemies determine which weapon can be used effectively and whether the player can continue attacking without being pinned down. The lack of reloading removes one common interruption, so weapon selection and positioning replace the pause normally spent changing magazines.

How Resident Evil 4 remake creates combat pressure

Aiming turns space into a problem to solve

RE4’s firearms are built around deliberate aiming. Enemy weak points give you a reason to control your shots instead of treating every target as an undifferentiated health bar. A precise hit can create an opening for a close-range attack, but taking that shot also means judging whether another enemy is about to reach Leon. The value of accuracy is therefore tactical as well as numerical: it can change what action is available next.

Enemy numbers are part of that pressure. Hirabayashi explained that enemies use their numbers in ways that respond to Leon’s added flexibility. A group can force you to choose between finishing a staggered target, creating distance, using a defensive parry or moving toward a safer position. The remake is not simply “slow and cautious”; its aimed shooting can lead directly into aggressive melee follow-ups when the situation permits.

The knife adds a timing decision

Knife parries give Leon a defensive answer that depends on timing rather than ammunition. A successful parry can interrupt or deflect a threat and create room for the next decision. The timing requirement varies with difficulty, so the same defensive idea does not carry identical risk at every setting. Using the knife also competes with other demands on the player’s attention: you must read an incoming attack while tracking enemies, space and available resources.

That makes RE4’s defense feel different from simply holding a movement key. You are evaluating a specific threat and committing to a brief timing window. When a parry succeeds, the reward is not only survival; it can be an opening for a follow-up attack or a chance to regain control of the encounter.

Stealth is optional, but it changes the opening move

Stealth is not mandatory. Hirabayashi called it an important element because it expands the variety of strategies available. Approaching quietly can reduce the number of enemies active at once or let Leon begin from a more favorable position, but choosing stealth does not remove the game’s broader resource and positioning questions. A missed approach, a newly alerted enemy or a blocked route can still turn the situation into a direct fight.

The Bolt Thrower supports this quieter approach while remaining recoverable, giving the player a way to influence an encounter without spending conventional ammunition in exactly the same manner as a loud firearm. It is an option inside the larger combat system, not a separate mode that replaces shooting.

Resources and upgrades shape the pace between fights

Resource management and weapon upgrades remain core elements in the remake. Ammunition, healing capacity and equipment choices affect how confidently you can take a direct fight, how much you value a weak-point opportunity and whether you would rather avoid detection. The result is a rhythm in which a difficult encounter has consequences beyond its final enemy: what you spent and what you preserved influence the next decision.

This economy also explains why the remake includes short breaks. A pause is not empty time; it lets you assess equipment, recover your bearings and decide how to approach the next pressure point. The developers’ stated aim was to preserve the original horror/action balance, including these changes in intensity.

How DOOM (2016) turns movement into offense

Speed and verticality are survival tools

DOOM (2016) treats speed as a combat resource. Running, changing elevation and double jumping can prevent enemies from controlling the player’s position. Vertical space creates additional routes and angles, allowing you to leave a dangerous lane, attack from above or cross a gap while maintaining the fight’s momentum.

Because movement is so closely tied to survival, stopping carries a different implication than it does in RE4. In RE4, stopping to aim can be the correct way to create a weak-point opening. In DOOM, prolonged stillness can surrender the spatial advantage that keeps the encounter manageable. The relevant question is often not “Can I line up one perfect shot?” but “Which route and weapon let me keep acting while the threat closes in?”

Weapon feel replaces reload pauses

Stratton specifically highlighted the way the weapons feel and the lack of reloading. A weapon can therefore be judged by how it changes movement and target selection rather than by whether it allows a safe pause behind cover. Switching weapons, closing or widening distance and using the environment’s vertical routes are parts of one continuous decision.

This does not mean DOOM has no resource considerations. Health, armor and power-ups are placed in the world, so route choice can determine whether you reach a useful pickup and when you expose yourself to do so. The distinction is that the cited identity of the 2016 game emphasizes maintaining action through movement and weapon use rather than managing a long sequence of quiet inventory decisions.

Improvisation is the intended combat posture

DOOM’s combat is described as fast and improvisational. “Improvisational” does not mean random: it means adapting quickly as enemy positions, available routes and weapon opportunities change. A player may move vertically to escape a cluster, switch weapons to exploit a different range, collect a placed resource and re-enter the fight without a formal reset.

The map is part of that improvisation. Flow between arenas and traversal spaces helps maintain forward pressure, while power-ups and pickups give movement a tactical purpose. The encounter asks you to keep solving several immediate problems at once instead of waiting for one carefully prepared opening.

Why the pacing feels different

RE4 alternates pressure and relief

The remake’s horror/action rhythm is defined by contrast. A crowded encounter can demand aiming, parries, weak-point shots, stealth decisions and resource judgment in quick succession. A quieter interval then gives you room to reassess equipment, notice the environment and approach the next threat with a plan. These breaks are part of the intended tempo, not evidence that the combat system has failed to stay active.

Hirabayashi’s statement about respecting the original tempo is a design intention, not proof that every player experiences the remake at exactly the same speed as the 2005 game. Difficulty, familiarity and individual decision-making can change how long an encounter takes and how often a player pauses. What can be said safely is that the remake was built to retain an alternating horror/action structure while adding more flexible responses inside fights.

DOOM maintains a stronger action pulse

DOOM (2016) foregrounds speed, map flow and combat as the focus of the experience. Traversal and fighting are closely connected, and the systems highlighted by its developers—vertical movement, double jumping, weapon handling, no reloading and placed pickups—support continued action. The game can still contain changes in intensity, but its defining rhythm is more sustained momentum than RE4’s deliberate alternation between danger and respite.

Calling DOOM “faster” is therefore shorthand for its continuous action posture, not a published measurement of shots per minute, encounter duration or campaign length. A player can move slowly in either game; the difference is which behavior the systems reward most consistently.

Resource design: scarcity in RE4, flow in DOOM, and the Eternal distinction

RE4 makes spending part of the decision

In RE4, the question is often whether a resource is worth spending now. A firearm round, a defensive action, an upgrade or a stealth opportunity can alter the shape of the current encounter and the options available afterward. The remake’s resource-management core makes preparation and restraint meaningful even when the immediate fight offers an aggressive melee opportunity.

DOOM (2016) places resources in the route

The 2016 DOOM source emphasizes health, armor and power-ups placed in the world. Their locations make movement and map knowledge relevant to survival: reaching a pickup may require crossing an exposed area, changing elevation or continuing through the fight instead of retreating to a static safe point. This supports the game’s action-forward flow without implying that its resource rules are identical to those of its sequel.

Do not assign Eternal’s replenishment loop to the 2016 game

DOOM Eternal introduced a more explicit aggressive resource loop in which chainsaw attacks provide ammunition, glory kills provide health and flame belch provides armor. Creative director Hugo Martin summarized that philosophy as: The solution to all the problems is to be aggressive. Those exact systems and that statement belong to Eternal. They should not be presented as mechanics of DOOM (2016) when explaining this comparison.

What the same combat situation asks you to do

If several enemies close in on Leon

RE4 gives you several possible priorities. You might target a weak point to create a close-range opening, attempt a knife parry when an attack arrives, use stealth or reposition before committing ammunition. The right choice depends on enemy spacing, your available resources and whether a short melee follow-up will reduce the immediate pressure. The system rewards reading the group and selecting an opening rather than following one universal sequence.

If several enemies control the arena in DOOM

DOOM’s cited tools point toward a different response: keep moving, use vertical routes and double jumps, switch weapons as ranges change and route through placed health, armor or power-ups when doing so preserves your momentum. The player is improvising with space and weapons at the same time. A pause to line up one perfect shot is less central than maintaining a position from which several actions remain possible.

Why neither example makes one game universally harder

Difficulty depends on what the player must monitor. RE4 concentrates attention on aim, threat priority, timing, scarcity and the consequences of a missed opening. DOOM concentrates it on movement, spatial awareness, weapon selection and rapid adaptation. A player comfortable with deliberate targeting may prefer RE4’s pressure; a player who excels at constant movement may prefer DOOM’s demands. The comparison describes different skills, not a single difficulty ranking.

Which game is faster-paced?

If “faster” means more continuous movement, rapid weapon use and fewer combat interruptions, DOOM (2016) is the clearer answer. Its developers put speed, verticality, map flow, weapon feel and no reloading at the center of the game’s action identity.

If “faster” means how quickly a situation can change, RE4 can also become intense. Enemy numbers, weak-point opportunities, parry timing and the choice between stealth and direct engagement can compress several decisions into a short encounter. The remake was not designed simply to speed up the original; it was designed to make the combat more flexible while preserving a horror/action tempo with brief breaks.

There is no evidence here for a numerical verdict such as a percentage difference in pace or an average encounter time. “Continuous action momentum” versus “horror/action peaks separated by respite” is an interpretive comparison grounded in the developers’ descriptions.

Which combat style fits your preferences?

  • Choose Resident Evil 4 remake if you want aimed shooting tied to weak points, meaningful resource decisions, defensive knife timing, optional stealth and a rhythm that alternates pressure with recovery.
  • Choose DOOM (2016) if you want movement to function as offense and defense, vertical arenas, weapon switching without reload pauses, map-driven momentum and improvisational action.
  • Expect a different kind of mastery. RE4 rewards recognizing openings and spending tools carefully; DOOM rewards maintaining spatial options while adapting weapons and routes in motion.
  • Check the entry before comparing. If the intended Doom is DOOM Eternal or another installment, its combat and resource systems need to be evaluated separately rather than substituted for the 2016 design.

What this comparison can—and cannot—establish

The developers’ interviews explain design goals and named systems, so they support a clear distinction between the games’ combat priorities. They do not establish that every player will experience identical pacing, that the remake reproduces the original’s tempo perfectly or that one campaign has a measured percentage more action than the other. Player skill, difficulty selection and familiarity can change the moment-to-moment experience.

The strongest conclusion is consequently about structure. Resident Evil 4 remake builds tension by combining aimed fire, enemy pressure, resources and flexible tactical responses inside an alternating horror/action rhythm. DOOM (2016) builds momentum by making movement, verticality, weapons and map flow the continuous center of combat.
