Then keep the host’s session open while the guest joins, and note whether the failure happens with every partner or just one. Those details help separate a session ending mid-join from a possible network-compatibility problem; there is no single fix that applies to every connection failure.
Start by identifying where the connection fails
Before changing router or firewall settings, compare notes with the other player. Record the exact error message or code, when it appears, and whether either of you can use other online features. Also establish whether the problem occurs with all partners or only one.

- Session ends before the join completes: the host may have left, disconnected, or closed the session during the attempt.
- Repeated timeout with one friend: the connection may be failing along either player’s network path.
- Online features fail more broadly: check the relevant platform’s current service status before treating this as a game-specific problem.
Capcom describes these as distinct possibilities for errors 50383-MW1 and 50382-MW1, respectively: 50383-MW1 and 50382-MW1. The descriptions are useful clues, not proof that every connection failure in RE5 or RE6 has the same cause.
Confirm that the players can connect to each other
Check platform and edition compatibility
Confirm the exact game, platform, and edition each person is using, and make sure both are signed in to the relevant platform network. Steam lists co-op for Resident Evil 5 and co-op as well as shared/split-screen play for Resident Evil 6. Those listings do not establish that players can connect across platforms or editions, so don’t assume cross-play is supported.

Keep the host’s session open
Have the host remain in the lobby or session until the joining player’s attempt finishes. Capcom says 50383-MW1 can occur if the host disappears or the host’s connection breaks during a join. If one attempt fails, retry with the host still present rather than immediately changing network settings.
Test with another partner, if possible
If you can connect to other players but not to one particular friend, both of you should check your network environments. Capcom describes 50382-MW1 as a failed or timed-out peer-to-peer connection and notes that a problem joining only one specific friend may point to that player’s network environment. That does not establish which person’s connection is responsible; either side could be involved.

On PS4 or Xbox One, compare NAT types
For Capcom error 50383-MW1 on these consoles, compare both players’ NAT types. Capcom says a frequent 50383-MW1 error usually stems from a NAT-type difference between the players. It describes Type 3 as strict: some online activity may work, while other functions may not work as intended. Type 2 is described as moderate and normally connected. NAT is a possible cause, not a diagnosis for every failed join.

These paths are specific to the PS4 and Xbox One guidance and may differ on other console generations or after system updates. If NAT is strict, consult the console, router, or ISP documentation for safe configuration options. Capcom cautions that using a DMZ or opening NAT can pose security risks; don’t enable DMZ as a casual troubleshooting step.

On Steam, try low-risk connection checks
Steam’s recommendations are general Steam-network troubleshooting, not confirmed RE5- or RE6-specific fixes. Start with the client and connection before making broader network changes.
- Check whether Steam has a broader network or connectivity problem.
- If practical, test with a direct wired connection. This can help determine whether the current wireless connection is contributing to the problem; it does not guarantee a fix. An Ethernet cable is only necessary if you need one to run that test.
- Review firewall permissions for Steam and the game. If you change permissions, restart Steam and test again. Do not leave your firewall disabled.
- Close background applications that may interfere with connectivity, then retry the join.
Steam also lists ISP traffic shaping as one possible explanation for connection problems that occur at particular times. Escalate with details that help diagnose the failure
If the connection still fails, gather the details from both players before contacting support or an ISP. Capcom directs people with persistent 50382-MW1 problems toward its platform-specific network guidance and their ISP; its support portal accepts technical troubleshooting requests.
- Game, platform, and edition for each player
- Exact error code or message and when it appears
- Whether the host’s session remains open during the attempt
- Whether the failure happens with every partner or only one
- Each player’s NAT result, if available
- Whether other online features work and whether the problem is limited to particular times
No RE5- or RE6-specific port-forwarding list is established by the cited guidance. Avoid copying port ranges from guides for other Resident Evil games and treating them as requirements for these titles.
