If Barry rescues her under the applicable story conditions, she can survive without using the substitute item. However, that rescue may leave her without the functional Shotgun, requiring a return trip. If Jill wants to remove the wall-mounted Shotgun herself, the Broken Shotgun is the safety substitute used in the trap room.
What the Broken Shotgun is for
The Broken Shotgun is not simply a weaker weapon or an optional duplicate. It is a trap-room substitute. The mansion’s wall-mounted Shotgun is rigged so that removing it can trigger the room’s danger. Placing the Broken Shotgun in the relevant position lets Jill take the functional weapon without leaving the trap unsatisfied.

An item description reproduced by Evil Resource reads: “It’s too dangerous to fire! Does it have another use?” That text explains the practical purpose of the item: it is not useful as a firearm, but it can stand in for the weapon mounted in the room.
That creates two separate questions that are easy to confuse:
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
- Does Jill need the Broken Shotgun to survive the trap? Not always. Barry can rescue her under certain story conditions.
- Does Jill need the Broken Shotgun to take the functional Shotgun herself? Yes. It is the substitute that makes that exchange safe.
So “need” depends on the goal. Escaping and obtaining the weapon are different outcomes.
Jill’s two practical outcomes
| Route | What Jill does | Immediate result | Functional Shotgun |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barry rescue | Jill enters the trap situation and Barry pulls her out when the relevant story conditions are active. | She survives without completing the Broken Shotgun item route. | Not necessarily obtained; an HD Remaster walkthrough says Jill leaves without it and must return. |
| Broken Shotgun substitution | Jill uses the Broken Shotgun as the replacement in the trap room before taking the wall-mounted weapon. | She resolves the trap herself. | She can take the functional Shotgun during that visit. |
The Barry route is therefore the way to avoid the item quest, not a guaranteed way to receive the weapon. If your goal is merely to continue after the trap, Barry’s intervention can be enough. If your goal is to leave that visit with the Shotgun, use the substitute route instead.
When Barry can rescue Jill
The rescue depends on story conditions rather than on Jill carrying a particular weapon. Evil Resource describes Jill as able to avoid the Broken Shotgun quest when Barry rescues her in the mansion trap sequence. The wording is conditional: Barry’s presence is not presented as a universal replacement for the item in every possible playthrough.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

An achievement guide reports one specific sequence condition: Jill can avoid going for the Broken Shotgun if she accesses the shotgun room before encountering Barry in the Main Hall for the Acid Rounds encounter. Treat that as a guide-reported trigger condition, not as a complete rule for every release. The available evidence does not establish that the same sequence behaves identically in every original version, port or remake.
In practical terms, the order of your exploration matters. If you are deliberately trying to use Barry’s rescue, pay attention to whether you have already entered the shotgun room before that Main Hall encounter. If you are playing a different release from the one described by the guide, do not assume that the same order is an exhaustive trigger specification.
How to choose your route before entering the room
Choose Barry’s rescue when you only need to survive
Use this approach when your immediate objective is to progress and you are willing to postpone collecting the functional Shotgun. The advantage is that Jill can avoid obtaining the Broken Shotgun. The trade-off is that the weapon may remain behind, so your route is not complete if you intended to add the Shotgun to Jill’s inventory at once.

Choose the Broken Shotgun when you want the weapon now
Use the substitute when the Shotgun itself is part of your plan. The Broken Shotgun is the item that satisfies the trap while Jill removes the functional weapon. This route avoids relying on Barry’s availability and avoids the possibility of needing to retrace your path later.
Do not treat the two routes as interchangeable
Barry’s rescue answers the question “Can Jill get out?” The Broken Shotgun answers “How does Jill safely take the wall-mounted weapon?” A rescue can solve the first problem while leaving the second unresolved.
Step-by-step: taking the functional Shotgun with Jill
- Decide that obtaining the weapon is your priority. If you want Jill to leave with the functional Shotgun, do not rely on Barry’s rescue as your only plan.
- Obtain the Broken Shotgun before committing to the trap-room exchange. It is the substitute item, not a usable combat weapon. The item description’s warning that it is too dangerous to fire is consistent with this role.
- Return to the mansion room containing the wall-mounted Shotgun. The relevant sequence is the mansion shotgun trap; this advice is not a general rule for later Resident Evil games.
- Use the Broken Shotgun as the replacement. The purpose of the exchange is to leave a shotgun-shaped substitute in place while Jill takes the functional weapon.
- Confirm that Jill has the functional Shotgun before moving on. This prevents the common mistake of assuming that entering the room or surviving the sequence automatically awards the weapon.
The exact control prompt varies by platform, but the decision is the same: the Broken Shotgun is used for the substitution, while the wall-mounted weapon is the item Jill is trying to keep.

Step-by-step: using Barry’s rescue instead
- Check your story order. The achievement guide’s reported condition involves entering the shotgun room before the Main Hall encounter with Barry for Acid Rounds. Because the guide does not establish every release’s rules, regard this as a condition to follow cautiously rather than a universal guarantee.
- Enter the trap sequence without assuming the Broken Shotgun is mandatory. If the applicable Barry event is active, Jill can be pulled out after the mistake.
- Let the rescue resolve the immediate danger. This route is about surviving the event, not automatically claiming the wall-mounted weapon.
- Check Jill’s inventory and progress afterward. The HD Remaster walkthrough reports that Jill leaves without the Shotgun after Barry pulls her out.
- Plan a return if the weapon is still required. The reported outcome is that Jill must come back for it, so record the room’s location and avoid assuming the rescue completed the weapon objective.
What changes in the HD Remaster context
The HD Remaster walkthrough is especially important because it separates survival from acquisition. In its account, Barry rescues Jill from the mistake, but Jill leaves without the Shotgun and has to return. That means a successful rescue should not be read as proof that Jill received the weapon automatically.
This distinction also explains why players can report different experiences while both being correct. One player may remember escaping without ever picking up the Broken Shotgun. Another may remember collecting the substitute in order to take the functional weapon. Those are different branches of the same trap sequence.
The advice here concerns the mansion shotgun trap in Resident Evil, including the HD Remaster context described by the walkthrough sources. It should not be transferred to Resident Evil 3 or its remake, where shotgun acquisition uses a different mechanic.

Jill versus Chris: do not copy the wrong condition
The Broken Shotgun is described as an old key item that replaces the functional Shotgun in the Living Room trap when playing as Chris. Jill’s route has an additional possibility because Barry can rescue her under the relevant circumstances. That difference is why a Chris walkthrough cannot automatically answer the Jill question.
For Jill, there are therefore two separate considerations: whether Barry’s rescue is available in the current story order, and whether you want the functional Shotgun immediately. For Chris, the item’s trap-substitution role is the relevant comparison. Do not assume that a condition reported for Jill’s Barry encounter applies to Chris.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
| What you see | Likely misunderstanding | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Jill escaped, but the Shotgun is not in her inventory. | Assuming Barry’s rescue awards the weapon. | The HD Remaster walkthrough says Jill leaves without it and must return. |
| You are looking for a combat use for the Broken Shotgun. | Treating it as a spare firearm. | It is a trap-room substitute; its item text warns that firing it is dangerous. |
| A guide’s Barry condition did not work in your release. | Assuming one version’s sequence rule is universal. | The achievement guide reports a specific order, but the available evidence does not establish every release’s trigger rules. |
| You entered the shotgun room and expected the objective to be complete. | Confusing room access with weapon acquisition. | Verify whether Jill actually has the functional Shotgun; if not, use the substitution route or return later. |
| You are following a Resident Evil 3 guide. | Applying a different game’s shotgun mechanic. | This answer is for the mansion trap in Resident Evil and its HD Remaster context, not Resident Evil 3 or its remake. |
A decision checklist for a no-surprises playthrough
- Need only to escape? Barry’s rescue may let Jill avoid the Broken Shotgun.
- Need the functional Shotgun during this visit? Bring the Broken Shotgun and use it as the trap substitute.
- Trying the Barry condition? Note the guide-reported order involving the shotgun room and Barry’s Main Hall Acid Rounds encounter, while recognizing that release differences are not fully established.
- Playing the HD Remaster? Expect that a Barry rescue can leave Jill without the Shotgun and require a return.
- Playing Chris or a different Resident Evil title? Recheck the character and game before applying Jill’s route.
The answer in one sentence
Jill can survive the mansion shotgun trap without the Broken Shotgun if Barry rescues her under the applicable conditions, but she needs the Broken Shotgun as the substitute if she wants to take the functional wall-mounted Shotgun herself during that sequence.
