For most newcomers, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It offers the strongest balance of survival-horror tension, exploration, resource pressure and modern presentation. Pick Resident Evil 4 (2023) if you want the most accessible, combat-heavy adventure; Resident Evil (2002/HD Remaster) for fixed-camera mansion puzzles and traditional survival horror; or Resident Evil 3 (2020) for a brisker campaign and the included Resident Evil Resistance multiplayer mode.

The quick verdict

These four games are remakes, but they do not pursue the same design. The 2002 remake of the first Resident Evil is a deliberate, fixed-camera puzzle game. Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the best all-round survival-horror starting point. Resident Evil 3 (2020) compresses the formula into a faster, more linear campaign. Resident Evil 4 (2023) turns the series toward a broad, combat-focused action adventure while retaining horror set pieces.

Resident Evil 2 (2019) The safest first choice and the strongest horror/action balance Third-person exploration, interconnected routes and resource management RE Engine visuals with modern third-person controls and spatial audio support Multiple character scenarios and additional modes, depending on edition
Resident Evil 3 (2020) A shorter, faster campaign and online multiplayer More linear pursuit and set-piece progression Modern third-person RE Engine design Resident Evil Resistance asymmetrical online mode
Resident Evil 4 (2023) Action-forward combat, variety and accessibility Set-piece-driven journey with frequent combat and upgrade decisions Modern third-person RE Engine design with reworked mechanics and story Separate Ways and Extra DLC Pack in Gold Edition

What each remake actually changes

Resident Evil (2002 remake and HD Remaster)

Capcom describes this version as a re-imagining of the 1996 PlayStation original rather than a simple visual update. It keeps the mansion setting, fixed camera angles, item-box logistics and puzzle-led progression, but expands rooms, story material and enemy encounters. The result is intentionally slower and more deliberate than the later third-person remakes.

The HD Remaster improves character models and backgrounds, adds a scrolling 16:9 presentation and lets you choose between the original tank controls and modern analog movement in-game. That choice matters: tank controls make every turn and doorway a practiced maneuver, while the modern option lowers the entry barrier without removing the fixed-camera design. Neither control style changes the underlying map, puzzle logic or need to conserve ammunition.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Released January 25, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, this remake was built from the ground up with Capcom’s RE Engine. It replaces the original’s fixed cameras with an over-the-shoulder view, photo-realistic environments and detailed character animation. Capcom also lists Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 and binaural audio support, which make footsteps, distant movement and room acoustics useful parts of the tension rather than decoration.

Its police-station, sewer and laboratory spaces are designed around locked routes, shortcuts and return trips. You learn which doors, keys and inventory items belong to each area, then decide whether a fight is worth the ammunition. Encounters are threatening because enemies can absorb resources and because clearing one corridor does not always make the next visit safe. That combination of exploration and pressure is why this is the most reliable recommendation for a first-time player.

Resident Evil 3 (2020)

Capcom calls this a reimagining of the 1999 Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It launched April 3, 2020, using RE Engine and adding the asymmetrical online game Resident Evil Resistance. The campaign moves more quickly than RE2, with more emphasis on chases, scripted escapes and action set pieces. Exploration still exists, but the route is generally more direct and the game spends less time asking you to master a large, interlocking map.

Choose it when you value momentum over extended puzzle solving. It is the briskest campaign of the four in overall structure, so players who want a compact horror run may prefer it. The trade-off is less of the slow-burn backtracking that defines RE1 and RE2. Resistance is a meaningful addition if you want an online mode, but its presence should not be treated as a substitute for the single-player campaign’s design.

Resident Evil 4 (2023)

Released March 24, 2023, this is a remake of the acclaimed 2005 game. Capcom says it reworks the story and modernizes the game feel while preserving the original’s appeal for new and returning players. It remains a third-person adventure, but its priorities are different from RE2: combat variety, weapon upgrades, crowd control and large set pieces drive the pace.

The remake gives you more ways to approach encounters and more reasons to experiment with your arsenal. Horror appears through atmosphere, enemy behavior and sudden danger, but the dominant rhythm is forward motion and combat mastery. That makes it the easiest entry to recommend to players who find traditional survival-horror inventory pressure restrictive. It is also the least representative choice if your main goal is mansion-style puzzle exploration.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition - PlayStation 5
  • FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
  • DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
  • A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.

Horror, exploration and combat compared

Category Resident Evil (2002) Resident Evil 2 (2019) Resident Evil 3 (2020) Resident Evil 4 (2023)
Atmosphere Gothic, enclosed and puzzle-focused Oppressive spaces, uncertainty and resource pressure Urgent pursuit with more action beats High-impact horror set pieces around an action-adventure pace
Exploration Extensive backtracking and route learning Interconnected areas with keys, shortcuts and return trips More linear progression between set pieces Broader spaces organized around combat encounters and objectives
Combat role Usually a cost to weigh against avoidance Important but ammunition remains precious More frequent and faster-moving Central system, with upgrades and multiple tactical options
Learning curve Highest if you have never used fixed cameras or tank controls Moderate; modern third-person conventions are familiar Moderate, with a faster tempo Most immediately accessible for action-game players

RE1 and RE2 ask you to understand a place. You identify safe rooms, memorize blocked routes and decide which supplies can wait in the item box. RE3 asks you to react quickly and keep moving. RE4 asks you to control crowds, select weapons and use upgrades efficiently. “Best” therefore depends on which kind of pressure you find enjoyable.

Which remake should you play first?

Choose Resident Evil 2 for the best all-round introduction

Start here if you want the clearest modern expression of survival horror. Its over-the-shoulder controls are familiar, yet the game still makes every item, locked door and route decision matter. It supplies enough action to stay readable without turning every room into a shooting gallery. The 2019 release is also a useful midpoint for the series: it introduces modern presentation while preserving the older games’ emphasis on space and scarcity.

Choose Resident Evil 4 if you want action first

Pick RE4 when your priorities are responsive shooting, enemy variety, upgrades and cinematic momentum. It is the most welcoming choice for someone coming from contemporary third-person action games. You will still encounter disturbing environments and horror scenarios, but you spend more time solving combat problems than managing a mansion-sized route.

Choose Resident Evil (2002/HD Remaster) for traditional survival horror

This is the choice for players who specifically want fixed cameras, deliberate movement, item-box planning and puzzles that require attention to the building’s layout. The modern control option helps newcomers, but the game’s age remains visible in its pacing and presentation. Play it first if the appeal of a carefully authored mansion is stronger than the convenience of a fully modern interface.

Choose Resident Evil 3 for a faster campaign or multiplayer

RE3 suits players who prefer a focused, urgent run rather than a long sequence of exploratory loops. Its included Resistance mode also gives the package a multiplayer angle that the other three do not share in the same way. Choose it first only if speed and pursuit are more important to you than the broadest exploration experience.

Controls and accessibility decisions

The control divide is straightforward. RE1 is the only one here that deliberately presents two movement philosophies: the original tank controls remain available, while a modern option moves the character in the direction of the analog stick. Tank controls preserve the original’s spatial discipline and can feel precise once learned; modern movement is easier for players accustomed to contemporary games.

Resident Evil Village Gold ED - PS5
  • A New Perspective – See the eighth core entry in the Resident Evil series from a new vantage point in “Third Person Mode.” In addition to the intense first-person view players enjoyed in the initial release of Resident Evil Village, they can now watch Ethan in action and experience his journey from a new angle in Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion.
  • The Story Continues – “Shadows of Rose” resumes the Winters family saga 16 years after the events of Resident Evil Village. The expansion’s new tale follows Rose Winters, the daughter of main protagonist Ethan, as she struggles with her terrifying powers. Explore the warped and twisted world inside the consciousness of the Megamycete in search of a cure.
  • The Mercenaries Are Back and Bigger Than Ever – The beloved battle-the-clock mode, “The Mercenaries,” returns with new features. On top of the original content, “The Mercenaries Additional Orders” introduces fan favorites as new playable characters Lady Dimitrescu, Chris Redfield, and Lord Karl Heisenberg, each with their own unique abilities. This added content for Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion also includes new levels and other improvements.
  • Bonus Game – Resident Evil Village will provide access to a free multiplayer experience titled Resident Evil Re:Verse, which releases on Oct. 28, 2022 alongside the launch of Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion. An all-star cast of iconic characters face off in four to six-player deathmatch battles in classic locations.
  • Familiar Faces and Fresh Foes – Resident Evil series hero Chris Redfield returns under a shroud of seemingly sinister motives. Ethan will also encounter a host of new adversaries inhabiting the enigmatic village, all with their own distinctive attacks.

RE2, RE3 and RE4 all use modern third-person conventions. That does not make them identical: RE3 emphasizes speed, while RE4 layers more combat decisions onto the same general viewpoint. If a fixed camera is a deal-breaker, begin with any of the three newer remakes. If camera angles and methodical movement are part of the appeal, do not dismiss RE1 simply because it lacks the newer perspective.

Extra content and edition choices

Resident Evil 3 and Resistance

The package includes Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical online title built around opposing roles. That makes the game’s value proposition different from a campaign-only purchase, but online populations and matchmaking conditions can vary by platform and region. Check the current platform listing before buying if multiplayer is your primary reason for choosing it.

Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition

The Gold Edition bundles the main remake with Separate Ways and the Extra DLC Pack. Capcom documents a PlayStation 5 release for this edition. Confirm the exact edition and platform in your market: catalog availability, cloud or mobile versions and included content can differ by region and can change after launch.

Platform and edition checks

Do not assume that one store listing represents every version. Capcom’s platform support and cloud or mobile availability differ by edition and market. Before purchasing, verify the platform family, whether the listing is the remake rather than the original, and whether downloadable content is included. This matters most for RE1, where “HD Remaster” identifies a presentation and control update, and for RE4, where Gold Edition identifies a specific bundle.

What the sales milestones say—and what they do not

Capcom’s published figures show broad audience reach, not a quality ranking. They are company-reported milestones with the dates below, rather than independent unit audits.

Game Published milestone Qualification
Resident Evil 2 remake More than 15 million cumulative units Capcom’s 2024 figure, reported April 25, 2025
Resident Evil 3 remake More than 10 million cumulative units Capcom’s 2024 figure, reported April 25, 2025
Resident Evil 4 remake More than 10 million units in approximately two years Capcom called it the fastest series entry to reach that milestone; reported April 25, 2025
Resident Evil 2 remake 3 million units in its first week Capcom figure from 2019
Resident Evil 3 remake 2 million units shipped in five days Capcom figure from 2020; “shipped” is not the same as audited sell-through
Resident Evil 4 remake More than 3 million units in its first two days Capcom figure from 2023

Those numbers explain why RE2 and RE4 are safe mainstream recommendations, but they cannot tell you whether fixed-camera puzzles, a short campaign or online play fits your taste. Use the design differences above as the deciding evidence.

A simple decision path

  1. Want the most balanced first game? Choose Resident Evil 2 (2019).
  2. Want shooting and set pieces above all else? Choose Resident Evil 4 (2023).
  3. Want the classic mansion formula? Choose Resident Evil (2002/HD Remaster).
  4. Want a brisk pursuit campaign or an included asymmetrical online mode? Choose Resident Evil 3 (2020).
  5. Unsure between the newer three? Play RE2 first, then move to RE4 for a more action-heavy follow-up or RE3 for a shorter change of pace.

Bottom line

Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the best default recommendation because it balances dread, exploration and modern controls without abandoning survival-horror resource decisions. Resident Evil 4 (2023) is the best action game, Resident Evil (2002/HD Remaster) is the purest traditional survival-horror remake, and Resident Evil 3 (2020) is the focused, faster alternative with Resistance multiplayer. Pick by the experience you want, not by release order or sales alone.
