There is no single winner for every buyer. A television-first player with a 4K HDR display should favor PS5 Pro. Someone who plays in short sessions away from the television should favor Switch 2, accepting the visual compromises that vary by game.
What is releasing on Switch 2?
Capcom announced three separate Switch 2 products:
- Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition
- Resident Evil 3
- Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition
Capcom lists digital availability from October 16, 2026. Physical editions are announced for January 29, 2027. Those dates matter if you want a cartridge rather than a digital purchase; they do not change the platform trade-off itself.

The PS5 Pro comparison is with the console versions of the same remakes. The Switch 2 product names confirm that RE2 and RE4 use Deluxe and Gold branding, but the available announcement does not provide a complete item-by-item list of included extras. Do not infer exact content parity from a subtitle alone. Check the SKU-specific contents shown by Capcom or the retailer before buying, especially if you already own downloadable add-ons on another platform.
How the two platforms differ
Image quality on a television
PS5 Pro is the safer choice when the console is connected to a large television. Its additional rendering reserve gives the games more room for texture clarity, fine geometry, lighting effects, and stable image reconstruction. The difference is most obvious in RE4, where Tom’s Guide describes the Switch 2 version as the most technically compromised of the three. In handheld mode, textures are noticeably softer, nearby objects can look blurry, and hair and foliage reveal the reduction in detail.
RE2 and RE3 make a stronger visual case for Switch 2. Their reported 60-fps targets and generally consistent performance mean the portable versions remain responsive rather than feeling like compromised, low-frame-rate conversions. On a television, however, the PS5 Pro version retains the advantage in clarity and effects. The larger the screen and the closer you sit, the easier it is to notice softer textures or reduced fine detail.

Switch 2 versions of RE2 and RE3 target 60 fps in both docked and handheld play. TechRadar’s RE2 review reports delightfully consistent frame rates, including during higher-intensity action. Its RE3 coverage describes a 60-fps target with barely noticeable drops in both modes.
A target is not the same as an absolute lock. These reports describe observed play rather than a manufacturer guarantee that every scene will remain at exactly 60 fps. They do establish that RE2 and RE3 are designed around smooth play on Switch 2, not a 30-fps handheld compromise.
PS5 Pro remains the choice when you want extra performance margin. On RE2, Capcom documents a 4K HDR mode at 60 fps and a separate 4K HDR mode at 30 fps with ray tracing selected. That gives television players a clear choice between higher frame rate and the ray-traced presentation. The available documentation does not specify an identical mode table for RE3 and RE4, so avoid treating RE2’s listed settings as a promise for every remake.

Ray tracing, controller features, audio, and loading
Capcom’s PS5 support documentation for RE2 lists several features that are not part of the basic Switch 2 comparison: ray tracing, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, 3D audio, and shorter loading. If you own a compatible television, sound system, and DualSense controller, PS5 Pro can make the game feel more like a showcase for the platform.
Switch 2’s advantage is not a competing feature list; it is flexibility. You can play docked or handheld without moving your save to another machine. The trade-off is that the RE2 Switch 2 edition has no gyro aiming or mouse mode, according to TechRadar. Players who rely on motion aiming or mouse-like precision should account for that omission before choosing the portable version.
Portability and session length
Switch 2 wins whenever the question is “Can I play this away from my television?” You can use the same game in handheld and docked modes, and RE2 and RE3 retain their 60-fps targets in both. That makes them particularly suitable for short sessions, travel, or a household where the television is often occupied.
PS5 Pro is a fixed television setup. It rewards a dedicated space with a large display, surround or 3D-capable audio, and a DualSense controller, but it cannot reproduce the Switch 2’s handheld use case. If portability is a requirement rather than a nice extra, that alone can outweigh image-quality differences.
Resident Evil 2: the most balanced Switch 2 choice
What the game offers
RE2 is the best starting point for newcomers and the most balanced recommendation in this comparison. Its structure emphasizes exploration, route planning, puzzles, resource management, and the tension of returning through familiar police-station and city spaces. Leon and Claire provide separate campaign perspectives, so the game offers a broader first purchase than RE3’s shorter, more action-focused run.
TechRadar’s reviewer completed both Leon and Claire’s stories and spent more than 20 hours with the Switch 2 edition. That is a report of one playthrough pattern, not a fixed completion time: difficulty, exploration, collectibles, and whether you replay the scenarios will change your total.

This is the strongest evidence that Switch 2 is not merely a convenience port for RE2; it is a credible way to play the remake if you value portability.
The limitations are practical rather than catastrophic. There is no gyro aiming or mouse mode, and PS5 Pro or PC remains preferable if your priority is peak performance and presentation. On a large television, the PS5 version’s documented 4K HDR options, ray tracing mode, shorter loading, and DualSense features give it a more complete high-end setup.
Who should buy RE2 on each platform?
- Buy RE2 on Switch 2 if you are new to the remake, want to play both Leon and Claire away from the television, or value a smooth portable 60-fps experience more than maximum image quality.

For a first-time buyer who owns both systems, the decision is therefore about lifestyle and display priorities, not whether the Switch 2 version is “good enough.” It is technically solid, while PS5 Pro is more capable.

RE3 is the most compact campaign of the three. TechRadar describes a run of about six hours, with fewer puzzles and a stronger emphasis on running, shooting, and set pieces. That makes it a useful choice if you want a brisk action-horror experience rather than RE2’s more exploratory structure.
Six hours is an observed completion time, not a universal limit. Difficulty, optional content, retries, and replaying sections can extend or shorten it. The important buying implication is that RE3 asks for less of your schedule than the other two remakes.

RE3’s shorter, more kinetic design makes responsiveness valuable. A portable 60-fps target fits the game’s running and shooting emphasis well. PS5 Pro still offers more performance reserve and the cleaner television presentation, but the practical gap is less damaging to RE3 than to RE4 because the game’s visual load is not described as the Switch 2 lineup’s biggest weakness.

If you are deciding which remake to try first, RE3’s length is an advantage for an action-focused player but a drawback for someone seeking the fullest exploration and replay structure. That game-design choice is independent of platform.

RE4 is the most ambitious and, for many fans, the best game in the group. Its larger environments, denser encounters, and broader visual demands make it the hardest Switch 2 port to match against a more powerful home console.
What is compromised on Switch 2?
Tom’s Guide identifies RE4 as the most technically compromised Switch 2 version. In handheld mode, textures are noticeably softer, nearby objects can appear blurry, and the downgrade is easier to see in hair and foliage. These are image-quality observations, not a claim that the game is unplayable. They explain why RE4 is the least straightforward recommendation for a television-first buyer.
On a small handheld screen, some of that softness may be less distracting than it is on a large television. The portable format also lets you play a demanding remake in places where PS5 Pro is unavailable. If your priority is access rather than visual inspection, Switch 2 can still be the right purchase.

Who should buy RE4 on each platform?
- Buy RE4 on Switch 2 if handheld access is decisive, you accept softer detail, and the ability to play anywhere matters more than matching the home-console image.

Does Switch 2 have the same content as PS5?
The announced Switch 2 products correspond to the three remakes, but the available platform information does not provide a complete side-by-side inventory of every bonus item, costume, weapon, or downloadable add-on. RE2 is labeled Deluxe Edition and RE4 Gold Edition, while RE3 is listed without one of those subtitles. Those labels are not sufficient evidence to claim identical content across platforms.
If a specific extra matters to you, compare the exact edition descriptions at purchase. Also check whether an add-on you already own is licensed separately on each platform; console licenses are not automatically interchangeable simply because the base game is the same.

Buying now or waiting for a physical edition
Digital Switch 2 editions are listed as available from October 16, 2026. The physical editions are announced for January 29, 2027. Buy digitally if immediate access and convenience matter more than owning a cartridge. Wait for the physical release if a boxed copy is important to you or if you want to make your platform decision after seeing final retail packaging and edition details.
Do not treat the physical date as evidence of a later technical upgrade. It is an announced distribution date, not a promise of a different frame-rate mode or visual revision.
Bottom-line recommendations by player type
New to the remakes
Start with RE2. Pick Switch 2 for portability and PS5 Pro for the strongest television presentation. Its two-character structure and exploration emphasis make it the most balanced introduction.
Action-focused player with limited time
