Resident Evil Requiem is Capcom’s ninth mainline survival-horror installment. Released on February 27, 2026, it follows FBI intelligence analyst Grace Ashcroft and veteran agent Leon S. Kennedy as separate investigations lead back to Raccoon City and the Umbrella Corporation. Capcom designed it to welcome people who have never played Resident Evil, while giving longtime fans meaningful connections to the series’ central incident.
Grace and Leon do not play the same way. Grace is vulnerable, short on supplies, and frequently forced to decide whether to fight, hide, or run. Leon is better equipped for direct combat, with firearms, melee attacks, parries, enemy weapons, an attaché case, and customizable weapon parts. Both characters can be played from a first-person or third-person viewpoint.

What is Resident Evil Requiem about?
The story begins when a body is discovered at an abandoned hotel in the American Midwest during a mysterious series of deaths. FBI intelligence analyst Grace Ashcroft is assigned to investigate because the hotel is where her mother was murdered eight years earlier. At the same time, veteran agent Leon S. Kennedy is sent there after a police officer disappears.
The two investigations eventually converge with the Raccoon City Incident, the catastrophe that has shaped much of Resident Evil’s history. Capcom describes Requiem as a return to the broader narrative rooted in Raccoon City and the secret activities of the Umbrella Corporation. The game uses Capcom’s RE ENGINE.

- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
That premise makes Requiem both a new investigation and a continuation. You do not need a chronology lesson to understand the immediate case, but the setting, characters, and references carry more weight if you already know why Raccoon City matters.
Who is Grace Ashcroft?
Grace Ashcroft is an FBI intelligence analyst and one of the game’s two protagonists. Her connection to the series is personal: she is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft.
Alyssa survived the Raccoon City Incident, worked as a reporter, and continued investigating Umbrella after the outbreak. Her history is also tied to the Ashcroft family appearances in the Resident Evil Outbreak games. That makes Grace’s assignment at the abandoned hotel more than a routine case; she is investigating the place where her mother was killed while confronting the same wider history that shaped Alyssa’s life.

Producer Masato Kumazawa said Capcom wanted a character with a personal connection to Raccoon City when creating a story set amid the city’s ruins. Grace is therefore the most direct viewpoint for players who want the emotional and investigative side of Requiem’s premise.
Is Leon in Resident Evil Requiem?
Yes. Leon S. Kennedy is the second playable protagonist. He is a survivor of the Raccoon City Incident and a seasoned agent of the DSO. In Requiem, he is dispatched after a police officer goes missing, placing him on a parallel path to Grace.
Leon’s presence connects Requiem to one of Resident Evil’s best-known recurring characters without making him the only way into the story. Grace’s investigation supplies the personal connection to the Ashcroft family, while Leon represents the experienced field agent dealing with a dangerous situation through training and firepower.
How does Requiem connect to Raccoon City and Umbrella?
Capcom has officially confirmed that Requiem’s narrative returns to the overarching story rooted in Raccoon City and Umbrella’s secret machinations. The official premise also confirms that Grace and Leon’s investigations lead back to the Raccoon City Incident.

Grace’s family history is confirmed: she is Alyssa Ashcroft’s daughter, and Alyssa’s survival and reporting career are part of the official character background. Beyond those facts, avoid assuming that an unannounced character, location, or event is part of the game merely because a theory links it to Umbrella.
Do I need to play the earlier Resident Evil games?
No. Director Koshi Nakanishi said, “The game is designed to be welcoming to complete newcomers who don’t know anything about the Raccoon City Incident or haven’t played any Resident Evil titles before.” That is the clearest guidance for first-time players: earlier games are optional context, not a stated prerequisite.
New players can follow the hotel investigation, understand who Grace and Leon are, and learn why Raccoon City matters through Requiem itself. Returning players will recognize Leon, the Raccoon City setting, Alyssa’s history, and the continuing Umbrella thread, so familiar references may have extra significance rather than being required information.

Optional games for Leon’s history
Resident Evil 2 is the most direct optional choice for learning about Leon’s connection to Raccoon City. You can use either the original release or its remake; treat them as different versions of the same foundational episode rather than assuming one is mandatory for Requiem.
Resident Evil 3 provides additional Raccoon City context. Again, the original and remake are optional routes, not prerequisites.
Optional games for the Ashcroft family
Resident Evil Outbreak and its related episodes are the most relevant optional material for Alyssa Ashcroft’s background and the civilian perspective on the outbreak. They are useful if you want more family history, but Requiem identifies Grace’s relationship to Alyssa directly enough for newcomers to understand it.
Where does Resident Evil 6 fit?
Resident Evil 6 is another optional game for readers who want more of Leon’s later series history. It is not presented as a required lead-in to Requiem.

| Protagonist | Core loop | Typical decisions and tools |
|---|---|---|
| Grace Ashcroft | Vulnerability and resource management | Decide whether to fight or flee; conserve limited supplies; craft items, ammunition, and one-hit injectors from infected blood. |
| Leon S. Kennedy | Armed field combat | Use firearms and melee attacks, parry enemies, take advantage of enemy weapons, manage an attaché case, and customize weapons with parts. |
Grace’s segments
Grace’s sections emphasize uncertainty. Limited supplies mean that eliminating every threat may not be the best choice, and the game expects you to judge when survival is more important than clearing a room. Crafting expands her options, including ammunition and one-hit injectors made from infected blood.
Her loop is therefore about risk assessment: identify what you can afford to spend, decide whether an encounter is worth engaging, and preserve enough resources for the next obstacle. The pressure comes from vulnerability and scarcity rather than from a constant stream of combat.
Leon’s segments
Leon’s sections shift toward deliberate action. He can rely on firearms, melee attacks, and parries, and he can use weapons taken from enemies. His attaché case provides an inventory-management layer, while customizable weapon parts let you adapt his equipment.

Ammunition, positioning, and timing still matter, but his trained-agent toolkit gives him more ways to control a fight than Grace generally has.
Can you play Resident Evil Requiem in third person?
Yes. Both Grace and Leon support first-person and third-person play. You can choose the perspective that best suits your comfort or preferred way of reading an encounter.
Producer Masato Kumazawa explained that the two views affect more than the camera. Animation, balance, the interface, and sound design all have to account for the selected perspective. As a result, switching viewpoints is not merely a cosmetic toggle; it changes how the game presents information and how encounters are tuned.
First person can make close-range threats feel more immediate, while third person gives you a broader view of the character and surrounding space. The official descriptions do not establish that one perspective is easier or that a particular protagonist is restricted to one view, so both characters should be considered fully supported in either mode.
Do actions carry between Grace and Leon?
In shared locations, some actions can persist between protagonists. Director Koshi Nakanishi gave two concrete examples: enemies killed by Grace remain dead when Leon reaches the area, and items left on the ground remain available.

This creates continuity between their campaigns and rewards careful preparation. It does not mean that every action, room, puzzle state, or location is shared. The confirmed rule is narrower: certain enemy and item states can carry over when the characters return to the same place.
How scary is Resident Evil Requiem?
The game alternates between Grace’s vulnerability and Leon’s more capable combat style, allowing tension to rise and fall instead of staying at one intensity. Nakanishi said, “Overall, this game may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, but it alternates between tension and relief, so it isn’t a continuous, suffocating experience.”
That description is useful for setting expectations. Requiem is intended to deliver serious horror, but its structure includes periods of relief and more active encounters. Players who dislike uninterrupted pressure should not assume that every minute is a sustained chase or ambush.

Resident Evil Requiem launched on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Capcom later added Nintendo Switch 2 at launch for that platform. These are the officially identified platforms.
| Platform | Availability stated by Capcom |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Released February 27, 2026 |

| PC | Released February 27, 2026 |

Edition names, prices, physical stock, and storefront availability can differ by country and can change after publication. The PlayStation storefront has displayed Standard and Deluxe editions as well as a demo listing, but a current price or regional listing should be verified directly before purchase. Do not assume that an edition shown in one country is offered in another.
Which version should a new player choose?
Choose the platform you already use and verify the listing’s region, format, and edition contents. The core game is the same named release, but Standard and Deluxe editions may not be presented identically in every storefront. A digital listing and a physical listing can also differ in stock and delivery options.
- Check that the product page explicitly says Resident Evil Requiem, not a previous Resident Evil title or a bundle.
- Confirm the platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Check whether the listing is Standard or Deluxe and read the included content on that regional page.
- Verify whether you are buying a digital license or a physical copy.
- Confirm the price and availability immediately before checkout because both are region-specific and volatile.
What is known about future content?
Capcom announced on March 16, 2026, that Resident Evil Requiem had sold more than 6 million units and that additional game content was planned. The announcement did not provide a detailed content description or a release date.
Recommended Free Tools
That means “additional content” should not automatically be read as a confirmed story expansion, character campaign, or specific downloadable-content schedule. Until Capcom publishes those details, the only established information is that more content was planned.
Why does Requiem matter to longtime fans?
Capcom reported more than 183 million Resident Evil game units sold worldwide as of December 31, 2025, following a figure of more than 170 million as of March 31, 2025. Those are franchise-wide totals, not Requiem sales. Requiem’s importance within that larger series comes from its deliberate return to Raccoon City, its use of both a new protagonist with an established family connection and a returning lead, and its attempt to bridge survival-horror vulnerability with trained-agent combat.
For newcomers, it is a self-contained starting point built around a clear investigation. For existing fans, it is a new chapter that revisits the incident and institutions at the center of the series without requiring every earlier game to be completed first.
