Resident Evil Requiem: How Its Horror Compares With Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil Requiem is designed to emphasize horror more strongly than Resident Evil 4 Remake. Capcom describes Requiem as a deliberate shift back toward vulnerability, exploration, limited resources and survival-horror tension. Its Grace sections keep the player under pressure, while Leon’s sections provide more capable, action-focused combat. The result is not constant fear: Requiem alternates tension with relief, using the contrast between its two protagonists as part of its pacing.

That is a comparison of design goals, not a measurable ranking of which game every player will find scarier. No controlled study or representative player survey establishes an objective fear score. The clearest evidence comes from Capcom’s producer and director, supported by Requiem’s two-character structure and its resource and combat systems.

What Capcom says Requiem is trying to do

Producer Masato Kumazawa said recent entries such as Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 leaned heavily toward action. Requiem was intended to restore a stronger horror focus. That statement places the game on a different design path from the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4, whose identity is built around forceful combat, crowd control and sustained forward momentum.

Director Koshi Nakanishi gave the most important qualification. In a PlayStation.Blog interview published January 29, 2026, he said: “Overall, this game may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, but it alternates between tension and relief, so it isn’t a continuous, suffocating experience.” The quote compares Requiem with Village, not directly with Resident Evil 4 Remake. It does, however, explain the intended rhythm: frightening sequences are meant to be broken up by moments in which the player can recover, explore or fight with more confidence.

Resident Evil Requiem Amazon Exclusive Edition - PlayStation 5

  • Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
  • For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
  • An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
  • Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.

Requiem therefore should not be described as an uninterrupted endurance test. Its horror emphasis comes from how often the game makes the player feel exposed, uncertain or short of options before giving some control back.

Requiem and Resident Evil 4 Remake compared

Category Resident Evil Requiem Resident Evil 4 Remake
Stated creative emphasis Return to a stronger horror and survival focus More action-oriented, following the combat-heavy direction associated with recent entries
Primary contrast Grace’s vulnerability versus Leon’s combat capability Leon remains the central playable action hero
Resource pressure Grace is often short on ammunition; limited-item management is a core element Leon’s sections emphasize weapons, enhancements and modifications
Pacing Alternates tension and relief rather than maintaining maximum fear continuously Leans more consistently toward action and combat momentum
Perspective options First-person and third-person perspectives Capcom’s listed product information identifies the remake, but the supplied comparison does not establish a parallel perspective analysis
Structural reference points Director compared its structure more closely with Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake Closer to the action-forward model associated with Resident Evil 4 and Village

This table describes emphasis, not difficulty. A game can create more fear through vulnerability without making every encounter mechanically harder, and a combat-heavy game can still contain dangerous or frightening moments.

Grace’s sections make vulnerability the central horror tool

A protagonist who is not prepared for the threat

Grace is new to confronting zombies. The director describes her play as relying more heavily on survival and items than on direct combat. That changes the emotional calculation of an encounter. Instead of assuming that every threat can be solved by accurate shooting and aggressive movement, the player has to consider whether ammunition, healing items or another resource should be spent at all.

Limited ammunition creates uncertainty even when the player understands the immediate objective. A hostile encounter can raise several questions at once: Is it safer to fight, evade or return later? Will using a valuable item now leave Grace unable to handle the next threat? Is a room worth searching if entering it may trigger danger? Those decisions are the practical foundation of Requiem’s horror emphasis.

Survival choices matter more than dominance

Grace’s vulnerability is not simply a story trait. It is expressed through the relationship between exploration, items and combat. The director identifies limited-item resource management as one of Requiem’s core elements, so the pressure extends beyond individual battles. A player who spends freely may reach a later area with fewer options; a player who avoids every confrontation may leave useful resources or information behind.

This design can make ordinary movement feel threatening. Backtracking is not merely travel between objectives when the player must account for what may have changed, what was previously left untouched and which supplies remain available. The game’s horror comes from maintaining that uncertainty over time, rather than from a single scripted scare.

Leon’s sections provide action, but not a safe zone

More tools and more direct combat

Leon’s sections are more action-oriented. The director specifically contrasts Grace’s ammunition shortages with Leon’s weapon enhancements and modifications. Those systems give Leon more ways to shape an encounter and support a more assertive style of play. Players can approach danger with a greater expectation that equipment and combat skill will solve the immediate problem.

That does not make Leon’s portions consequence-free. Nakanishi said they still contain danger and are not simply power fantasies. The distinction is one of agency and emphasis: Leon is better equipped to confront threats directly, while Grace is more often forced to weigh whether confrontation is affordable.

Why the contrast can make both styles work

Alternating between a vulnerable character and a capable combatant gives Requiem a built-in pacing mechanism. After a stressful sequence in which every round matters, Leon’s stronger arsenal can provide relief without ending the danger entirely. Conversely, returning to Grace after a more aggressive section can make limited resources feel threatening again.

This is different from treating one campaign as “the horror mode” and the other as “the action mode.” The two experiences are designed to affect each other. Relief has value because tension came before it, and Grace’s vulnerability remains meaningful because the player also knows what a more empowered approach feels like.

Resources and combat: the practical difference

Grace: ammunition as a recurring decision

  • Grace is often short on ammunition.
  • Her play relies more on survival and items than on direct combat.
  • Limited-item management is part of Requiem’s broader structure.
  • Choosing not to spend a resource can be as important as using it.

These points support a resource-pressure model of horror. They do not prove that Grace’s sections are objectively harder, because difficulty also depends on player decisions, encounter design and the way the game distributes supplies.

Leon: enhancements and modifications as agency

  • Leon has weapon enhancements and modifications that support a more assertive combat style.
  • His sections are intended to carry more action momentum.
  • Danger remains present, so greater equipment does not remove the need for positioning, timing or judgment.

The comparison is therefore not “weak character versus easy character.” It is a shift in the number and type of solutions available to the player. Grace’s choices are shaped by scarcity; Leon’s are shaped more by how to use an expanded combat toolkit.

Actions persist between Grace and Leon

Requiem interweaves the two protagonists in shared locations. The director said that enemies killed and items collected while playing as Grace remain reflected when the player later controls Leon. Those persistent changes make the characters’ campaigns part of one connected environment rather than two isolated routes.

Strategic consequences

A decision made during Grace’s vulnerable section can alter the conditions Leon encounters later. Clearing a threat may reduce danger for the next character, while taking an item early may change what remains available. Because the game preserves these actions, players have a reason to think beyond the current room and consider how one character’s priorities affect the other’s situation.

Why persistence supports replay

The system also creates room for different approaches on another playthrough. A player might conserve resources for Grace, take a more aggressive route with Leon or experiment with which threats to remove before changing characters. The director presented this interwoven design as support for strategic choices and replay value, not as a promise that every route will produce a completely different story.

First-person and third-person perspectives

Requiem supports both first-person and third-person play. Nakanishi said the third-person option was included after the team observed that some players struggled with first-person play. That makes perspective a matter of accessibility and preference, not a simple difficulty slider.

First-person presentation can place the player closer to a character’s immediate viewpoint, while third-person provides a wider view of the character and nearby space. The available evidence does not justify declaring one perspective universally scarier. Camera distance, visibility and player familiarity can affect tension differently for different people.

The important comparison with Resident Evil 4 Remake is that Requiem gives players a choice specifically connected to how they experience its survival-horror design. Selecting third-person does not guarantee a less frightening game, just as first-person does not guarantee a more frightening one.

Structure: closer to Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2 remake

Nakanishi compared Requiem’s overall structure more closely with Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake than with Resident Evil 4 or Village. He identified exploration, backtracking, combat, puzzle-solving and limited-item resource management as core elements.

Exploration and backtracking

Exploration gives the player reasons to study spaces instead of simply moving from one combat arena to the next. Backtracking can connect earlier discoveries with later tools or objectives, while the resource system makes the cost of revisiting an area part of the decision.

Puzzles and combat in the same loop

Puzzles interrupt combat momentum and ask the player to observe, remember and manage space. Combat then tests whether the player’s previous choices left enough supplies for the next threat. This combination is a structural source of tension: the game can ask for careful thinking and immediate survival without reducing either element to a separate mode.

The director’s comparison is a description of structure, not proof that Requiem duplicates either earlier game. It indicates the kinds of activities and pacing the team prioritized.

How the fear is paced

Requiem’s horror is best understood as a cycle: vulnerability, pressure, a survival decision, and then a period of relief or greater control. That cycle distinguishes it from a game that tries to keep the player at maximum intensity throughout.

Resident Evil 4 Remake can still be dangerous and frightening, but its combat systems encourage the player to engage threats directly. Requiem’s design places more weight on the moments before combat: deciding whether to spend ammunition, searching for items, navigating familiar spaces and anticipating what may have changed.

Neither approach is automatically superior. Players who want a stronger survival-horror emphasis may prefer Requiem’s stated priorities. Players who want frequent combat, weapon development and a more forceful action rhythm may prefer the remake’s emphasis. A player’s personal response will depend on tolerance for scarcity, camera preference and whether uncertainty or combat pressure produces more fear.

Which game fits which kind of horror player?

Requiem is the closer match if you want:

  • A stronger stated return to survival-horror design.
  • Frequent decisions about ammunition and item use.
  • Exploration, backtracking and puzzle-solving alongside combat.
  • A campaign that changes feel between a vulnerable protagonist and a more capable one.
  • A choice between first-person and third-person perspectives.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is the closer match if you want:

  • A more consistently action-oriented structure.
  • Leon as the central combat-focused protagonist.
  • Weapon enhancements and modifications as a major part of play.
  • Danger experienced through direct encounters and sustained combat momentum.

Those are preference guidelines based on the creators’ descriptions, not a universal verdict about which game is more frightening.

The fairest verdict

Resident Evil Requiem is designed to feel more horror-focused than Resident Evil 4 Remake, especially when Grace is managing scarce ammunition, items and uncertain routes. Leon’s sections deliberately bring more combat power and relief, while still preserving danger. The game’s alternating structure, persistent actions between characters and perspective options all support that broader design.

The evidence does not support an objective claim that Requiem will scare every player more. It supports a narrower and more useful conclusion: Requiem puts vulnerability and survival decisions closer to the center of its experience, whereas Resident Evil 4 Remake puts combat agency and action momentum closer to the center.
