Resident Evil’s “new era” in 2026 has a specific centerpiece: Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline game and the series’ 30th-anniversary release. Capcom used the phrase in a 2025 creators’ message, then described the game as a turning point. It launched on February 27, 2026, bringing Leon back to Raccoon City alongside new protagonist Grace Ashcroft. The phrase is official; a permanent franchise-wide reset is not.
What is the new era of Resident Evil in 2026?
Capcom Europe’s June 2025 creators’ message said, “A new era of survival horror begins when Resident Evil Requiem launches February 27, 2026.” Capcom’s 2025 integrated report separately called Requiem the 30th-anniversary title that “marks a turning point for the series.” Those are Capcom’s promotional and corporate descriptions, not independent critical verdicts. They support describing this release as an anniversary-era landmark, but do not establish a permanent new release strategy or a franchise-wide reset.

The timing is deliberate: the first Resident Evil debuted in 1996, making 2026 the series’ 30th anniversary. Capcom identifies Requiem as the ninth main installment. It launched February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The initial 2025 announcement listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; Capcom confirmed the Switch 2 version later.
Capcom’s releases make the game’s commercial reach measurable, with dates attached: the company reported 8 million Requiem units sold as of June 30, 2026, and said it reached that milestone faster than any previous game in the series. Separately, Capcom reported more than 183 million cumulative Resident Evil game sales as of December 31, 2025. Those figures describe different measures and reporting dates; the franchise total is not an October 2026 tally.

What changed in Resident Evil Requiem?
Leon’s return meets a new lead
Requiem pairs familiar series history with a new point of entry. Leon S. Kennedy returns to Raccoon City, while Grace Ashcroft is a new protagonist. Capcom says the story connects to the series’ wider lore. In a January 2026 PlayStation Blog interview, director Koshi Nakanishi described Grace as a way for newcomers to enter the story, while Leon’s return and character development offer something for longtime players. This is the director’s stated design intent, not a guarantee that every newcomer will need no prior context.
Nakanishi said Leon’s return to a mainline game follows the series’ focus on Ethan in Resident Evil 7 and Village. The two protagonists are not simply interchangeable narrators: Capcom frames their sections around alternating tension and release, and Nakanishi characterizes Grace’s portions as more horror-focused and Leon’s as more action-oriented.
Perspective and difficulty are player choices
Players can choose first- or third-person perspective, and Capcom says the viewpoint can be switched in real time. The options let players adjust how closely they experience the horror or how much of the character and surroundings they see. Capcom also lists multiple difficulty settings. These are defined choices within the game; the cited sources do not establish that one perspective or difficulty is objectively best.

The zombies are described as less predictable
Nakanishi said the zombies retain traces of human intelligence and behave less predictably. That description fits the game’s emphasis on tension, but it should be understood as the director’s account of the design rather than a claim based on independent testing.

Capcom and director Nakanishi present Grace’s story as an entry route for newcomers, while the Raccoon City setting, connected lore, and Leon’s return reward familiarity with the series. A new player can approach the game through Grace without treating it as a remake or a standalone reboot: it is the ninth mainline installment and remains tied to the broader story.
If you are choosing based on tone, Grace’s sections are the more horror-oriented side of the experience; Leon’s are more action-focused. If you are choosing based on how the game looks and feels to play, first- and third-person views are available, with real-time switching. Those are the clearest choices Capcom has documented.

What platforms is Resident Evil Requiem on?
Capcom’s September 2026 product details list PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Choose based on the hardware you already own and the platform on which you want to play. The available information here does not establish platform-by-platform resolution, frame rate, performance, pricing, edition differences, or whether a PC listing refers to a particular storefront.
What the new-era label does—and does not—mean
The case for calling 2026 a new era is concrete: an anniversary mainline release, Leon returning to Raccoon City alongside a new protagonist, horror/action contrast between their sections, and selectable perspectives and difficulty. Capcom’s own language gives the label an official basis. It remains a description of Requiem and its anniversary moment, not evidence of announced future remakes, annual releases, downloadable-content plans, or other unannounced projects.
The milestone has also received external recognition: Capcom reported that Requiem received an Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards 2026. That award and the company-reported sales figures indicate reach and recognition; neither by itself proves a lasting change to the series’ direction.
