Resident Evil Requiem makes its strongest case through contrast: Grace Ashcroft’s chapters emphasize scarcity, investigation and vulnerability, while Leon S. Kennedy’s lean toward weapons, combat and forward momentum. Published reviews praise the blend, though they also point to trade-offs in novelty and campaign length. The central question is whether the shifts create a satisfying horror rhythm or make the campaign feel divided.
What is Resident Evil Requiem?
Resident Evil Requiem is Capcom’s ninth mainline Resident Evil game, a survival-horror title made with the company’s RE ENGINE. It launched on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Capcom’s announcement describes the game as a return to Raccoon City, where FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and veteran agent Leon S. Kennedy investigate deaths that bring their stories together. Capcom’s game announcement lists the platforms and release details.

The series has sold more than 183 million games cumulatively as of December 31, 2025, according to Capcom. The company also announced on March 4, 2026, that Requiem had sold more than five million units. Those figures establish the scale of the series and the game’s launch, but do not determine whether its particular mix of horror and action works.
How Grace and Leon shape the game
Grace: scarcity, investigation and vulnerability
Grace is an FBI intelligence analyst investigating deaths linked to the abandoned Wrenwood Hotel, where her mother was murdered. Her sections focus on limited supplies, item crafting, investigation and the decision to fight or flee. The tension comes from weighing risk rather than assuming every threat can be overcome with firepower.

- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Leon: combat and momentum
Leon is a seasoned agent investigating the latest deaths. His play style puts more emphasis on firearms, melee attacks, parries, enemy weapons and equipment upgrades. The contrast gives the campaign a different kind of pressure: Grace’s question is often how to survive with little, while Leon’s is how to respond effectively in a fight.
The distinction is more than a change in protagonist. Director Koshi Nakanishi says that when the characters return to some of the same locations, enemies Grace killed and items she collected remain changed for Leon. That gives their separate chapters a shared-space connection, although the available description does not establish how often or how extensively those consequences appear.
Does the horror-and-action balance work?
Nakanishi describes the intended rhythm as alternating tension and relief. “Overall, this game may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, but it alternates between tension and relief, so it isn’t a continuous, suffocating experience,” he told PlayStation Blog.

He also explained the design logic behind Leon’s role: “In Resident Evil Requiem, however, Leon’s segments lean more into satisfying action, which allowed us to really push the horror in Grace’s sections.” That is the director’s account of how the two modes were meant to support each other, not an independent measure of how scary the finished game is.
Reviews broadly support the combination. PC Gamer praises splitting puzzles, horror and action between Grace and Leon, while Tom’s Guide finds the blend of strengths from recent mainline games compelling. The counterpoint is that Tom’s Guide considers Requiem less innovative than its two immediate predecessors. In other words, the appeal is synthesis more than a wholesale reinvention of the series’ formula.
Can you choose first- or third-person view?
Yes. PlayStation’s official product page says both characters’ stories can be played in first or third person, and Nintendo’s official page also describes the choice for Grace and Leon. Nakanishi said the option was included from the outset after some players found first-person play difficult and third-person support in Village’s DLC helped those players. That explains the design choice; it is not a formal accessibility certification. See the PlayStation product page and Nintendo’s product page for their platform-specific descriptions.

How long is the campaign?
PC Gamer’s reviewer reported finishing in about ten hours. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not a guaranteed completion time or a representative average. The available review evidence supports treating campaign length as a consideration, but not assigning every player the same duration.
Should you play Resident Evil Requiem?
The game’s clearest strength, as reflected in published reviews, is the deliberate contrast between Grace’s resource-conscious horror and Leon’s more action-oriented chapters. Its premise should especially appeal to players who enjoy switching between survival pressure and combat, and who want the choice of first- or third-person perspective. Players chiefly looking for a major formal departure from recent Resident Evil games may share Tom’s Guide’s reservation about its level of innovation.
