Start with Resident Evil 2 (2019) if you want a practical entry into the broader Resident Evil series; choose the Dead Space remake (2023) if an isolated sci-fi nightmare aboard one haunted ship is the premise that appeals to you. There is no evidence-based universal winner here: the better first game depends on the setting you want and whether the specific edition is available on your platform.
Which horror series should you play first?
For someone curious about Resident Evil, the clearest starting recommendation comes from Capcom itself. In its October 18, 2024 guide, Capcom USA staff say: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” The guide acknowledges that choosing an entry in a long-running franchise can feel daunting, but its recommendation means you do not need to begin by working through the entire chronology. Choose Dead Space first if what you want is specifically sci-fi survival horror centered on one engineer’s struggle aboard a mining ship. EA’s remake launched January 27, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. EA’s launch announcement.

What kind of horror does each starting point offer?
Resident Evil 2 (2019): a doorway into a larger series
Resident Evil began in 1996 and has continued across console generations, so its catalog represents a much broader commitment than any single entry. That scale can make a starting recommendation more useful than attempting to follow every release in order. Capcom’s guide also includes the opinion, “Resident Evil 7 biohazard is the scariest one! Play that one to lose sleep.” Treat that as the staff member’s subjective suggestion for readers seeking a scare—not as a measured comparison or a claim that it is the right first game for everyone. Dead Space (2023 remake): Isaac Clarke on the USG Ishimura
EA’s story setup follows Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent to repair the mining starship USG Ishimura. The crew has been slaughtered, Nicole is missing, and hostile Necromorphs threaten Isaac as he tries to understand what happened. Isaac’s engineering background is part of how the game frames survival: EA says he uses tools and skills to fight Necromorphs strategically, solve puzzles, and turn malfunctioning ship systems to his advantage. EA also notes improvements to his suit and arsenal, and that Gunner Wright returned as Isaac’s voice and in-game face in the remake. EA’s announcement.
Check platforms before you buy
EA’s 2023 launch announcement lists Dead Space (2023) for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; its current game page links PC, PlayStation, and Xbox store categories. Store availability, edition details, and prices can change, so check the listing for your region rather than relying on an old price or assuming every version is currently offered. Capcom’s article supports the Resident Evil 2 (2019) starting recommendation but does not enumerate that game’s complete platform availability. Confirm the edition in your local console or PC store before choosing it on platform grounds. Capcom’s guide mentions VR versions for Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7 biohazard, and Resident Evil Village; that does not mean the whole franchise supports VR. Capcom USA’s guide.

For scale, Capcom’s September 2025 corporate release reported more than 174 million cumulative Resident Evil game units sold since the series began in 1996, as of June 30, 2025.
