Respiration is a helmet enchantment that extends the time you can stay underwater before your air runs out. Respiration III is the highest level and gives roughly 60 seconds of underwater air instead of the normal 15 seconds. It does not provide infinite water breathing.

For longer underwater projects, combine Respiration with a Water Breathing potion, a bubble column for refilling air, or an activated conduit. Those options solve the time limit that Respiration alone cannot.

Respiration is an enchantment for helmets and turtle shells. Its sole breathing benefit is extending your normal underwater air supply. When you submerge, the air meter begins draining; Respiration gives you additional time before you must reach the surface or use another way to refill your air.
The enchantment is reusable. Once it is on your helmet, every dive benefits from it without consuming an item or requiring a recharge. That makes it useful for exploration, collecting blocks, looting underwater structures and making short repairs or construction trips.
#1 Best Overall
Respiration changes breathing time, not underwater movement or mining speed. If blocks are taking too long to break underwater, the relevant helmet enchantment is Aqua Affinity, which is separate from Respiration.
Respiration levels and underwater time
Minecraft’s normal air supply is about 15 seconds. Each level of Respiration adds approximately 15 seconds to that baseline. The commonly cited gameplay timings are:
| Helmet enchantment | Approximate underwater air time | Additional time over an unenchanted helmet |
|---|---|---|
| None | About 15 seconds | — |
| Respiration I | About 30 seconds | About 15 seconds |
| Respiration II | About 45 seconds | About 30 seconds |
| Respiration III | About 60 seconds | About 45 seconds |
These are practical gameplay figures rather than a guarantee that every dive ends at the exact same tick. The air meter is measured by the game continuously, and damage, movement and the moment you entered the water can make the visible timing feel slightly different. Plan around the approximate value, especially when you are far from a safe air source.
What Respiration III means
Respiration III is the maximum level of the enchantment. It does not stack beyond level III, and wearing two helmets does not add their levels together because only the equipped helmet affects you. A Respiration III helmet therefore gives the longest ordinary breath-holding period available from the enchantment itself: roughly one minute.
Does Respiration give infinite water breathing?
No. Respiration extends breath-holding but never turns the player into a permanently air-independent diver. When its extra time is exhausted, your air meter can still reach zero and you can drown if you remain submerged.
This distinction matters during tasks that keep you underwater for several minutes. A Respiration III helmet is excellent for a short dive, but it is not a substitute for a renewable air source or a long-duration effect. Treat the enchantment as extra margin for returning to the surface, not as permission to ignore the air meter.

How to obtain Respiration
There are several legitimate ways to acquire the enchantment. The available route depends on what resources and trading opportunities you have in your world.
Enchanting table
Place a helmet or turtle shell in an enchanting table and inspect the offered enchantments. Respiration can appear as one of the available results. The displayed options are random, so you may need to enchant other items or refresh the offers before the desired level appears.
Enchanted books from fishing
Fishing can produce enchanted books, including books with helmet enchantments. A Respiration book can be saved until you have the right helmet and then applied with an anvil.
Villager trades
Villager trading can provide enchanted books. Check librarian offers and continue developing the trade options until a Respiration book is available. A traded book is useful when you want to choose the helmet, material and other enchantments separately from the enchantment-table roll.

If you have a Respiration enchanted book, use an anvil to merge it with a compatible helmet or turtle shell. The resulting item carries the enchantment. This method is also the practical way to add Respiration to an already valuable helmet instead of replacing the helmet with a newly enchanted one.
How to apply Respiration step by step
- Obtain a helmet or turtle shell and either a Respiration book or an enchanting-table opportunity.
- If using an enchanted book, place the book and the helmet in an anvil.
- Check the output slot to confirm that Respiration is being transferred to the helmet.
- Take the completed helmet and equip it in the head armor slot before entering the water.
- Keep a route to the surface or another air source in mind; the enchantment extends the timer but does not remove the drowning risk.
Respiration can be used on ordinary helmets and turtle shells. A turtle shell is therefore both a helmet option with its own temporary water-breathing benefit and a valid host for Respiration.

Respiration versus Aqua Affinity
These enchantments are often confused because both are designed for underwater activities, but they solve different problems:
| Enchantment | What it improves | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Respiration | Extends the time before your air runs out | Does not make mining faster or provide indefinite breathing |
| Aqua Affinity | Improves underwater mining speed | Does not extend your air supply |
For general underwater work, a helmet carrying both enchantments is more useful than choosing between them. Respiration gives you more time to work; Aqua Affinity reduces the underwater mining penalty. Neither enchantment replaces a long-duration breathing solution for a major build.
Alternatives for long underwater dives
When the job lasts longer than your Respiration timer, choose an option based on whether you need portability, a refill point or a permanent working area.
Water Breathing potion
A Water Breathing potion is a consumable that provides a longer breathing period than ordinary air and Respiration alone. It is portable, so it works while traveling between locations and does not require a structure at the work site. Carry enough for the whole task and leave a safety margin for detours, combat or inventory management.
Bubble column
A bubble column gives you a place to refill your air meter. Position one near a mining site, entrance or vertical shaft and return to it whenever your air is low. This approach is reusable, but it requires you to remain within reach of the column and may be impractical in open-ocean travel.
Activated conduit
An activated conduit grants Conduit Power within its effect area. The effect allows indefinite breathing in that area and also improves underwater vision and mining. A conduit is therefore suited to a permanent base, ocean monument project or other fixed work zone. It requires substantial materials and setup, so it is a larger investment than enchanting a helmet or drinking a potion.
Rank #4
Turtle shell
A turtle shell supplies a temporary water-breathing benefit and occupies the helmet slot. It can also carry Respiration, allowing the shell and enchantment to contribute to the same dive. Because the shell’s benefit is temporary, it should still be treated as an aid rather than a permanent replacement for Conduit Power.
Comparing underwater-breathing options
| Option | Duration or coverage | Consumable? | Requires a prepared area? | Other benefits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Respiration I–III | About 30, 45 or 60 seconds respectively | No | No | Works on every dive while equipped |
| Water Breathing potion | Longer than ordinary air; exact duration depends on the potion used | Yes | No | Portable breathing protection |
| Bubble column | Reusable refill point | No | Yes | Restores air when you return to it |
| Activated conduit | Indefinite breathing within its effect area | No once activated | Yes; substantial materials and setup | Improves underwater vision and mining |
| Turtle shell | Temporary water-breathing benefit | No | No | Can also carry Respiration |
The table’s duration categories are intentionally different: Respiration has a measured breath-holding extension, a potion supplies an effect for its own duration, a bubble column covers only the location where it is built, and a conduit covers its powered area.

Short exploration trips
Use Respiration I or better when you are checking a wreck, gathering a few blocks or crossing a shallow section. The enchantment is reusable and keeps your inventory free of potion bottles.
Looting or traveling between underwater points
Respiration III gives the largest single breath window, but carry a Water Breathing potion when the route is unfamiliar or the destination is far from the surface. The potion protects against a missed turn or an unexpected fight that consumes your planned time.
Mining or construction at one fixed site
Use a helmet with Respiration and Aqua Affinity for ordinary work. Add a nearby bubble column for repeated refills. If the project will continue for a long time, an activated conduit is more convenient because Conduit Power supports indefinite breathing and improves vision and mining throughout its area.
Ocean-monument work
Monument interiors are difficult places to retreat from when your air is low. Bring Respiration, a Water Breathing potion and a clearly marked exit or refill route. A conduit is the long-duration solution once you have gathered the materials and established its effect area.
Best Value
A practical underwater workflow
- Prepare the helmet. Equip Respiration, preferably level III for the longest ordinary breath window, and add Aqua Affinity if you will mine.
- Mark an air route. Identify the nearest surface, bubble column or safe chamber before starting the dive.
- Set a return threshold. Do not wait for the last bubbles. Begin returning while you still have enough time to navigate around obstacles.
- Carry a backup. Keep a Water Breathing potion available for an unexpected delay, especially in deep water or structures with confusing corridors.
- Use fixed-site infrastructure. For repeated work, install a bubble column or establish an activated conduit so every trip does not depend solely on the helmet’s timer.
- Leave the water safely. Confirm that you are fully out of danger before opening a chest, reorganizing your inventory or changing armor.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Expecting Respiration III to last forever
Respiration III still provides only about a minute of ordinary underwater air. If you need to remain submerged beyond that, add a potion, refill point or conduit rather than relying on the helmet alone.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Using Aqua Affinity as a breathing enchantment
Aqua Affinity changes mining speed, not the air timer. Add Respiration separately when the problem is running out of breath.
Leaving the Respiration helmet unequipped
The enchantment works only when the helmet or turtle shell is in the head slot. Carrying an enchanted helmet in your inventory does not extend your current air supply.
Starting a long project without a refill plan
A reusable helmet is not the same as a reusable air source. Before building or mining underwater, decide where you will surface, refill or activate Conduit Power. This prevents a routine task from becoming an emergency swim.
Replacing a useful helmet unnecessarily
If your current helmet already has desirable enchantments, apply a Respiration book with an anvil instead of discarding the item. This preserves the existing equipment while adding the breathing extension.
The essential answer
Respiration is the standard helmet enchantment for staying underwater longer: level I gives about 30 seconds, level II about 45 seconds and level III about 60 seconds. It is reusable and works on helmets or turtle shells, but it never grants true infinite breathing. Use Aqua Affinity when mining speed is the problem, and use a Water Breathing potion, bubble column or activated conduit when the task outlasts the Respiration timer.
