Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your Restreamer Docker container keeps restarting, capture its exit details, recent Docker events, and Restreamer process logs before changing the deployment. The restart policy explains why Docker keeps trying; it does not identify what made Restreamer exit. The evidence may point to the container runtime, application or FFmpeg process, persistent storage, image/version, or input workload.
Capture what happens before changing anything
Keep the current container and its logs intact while you collect a timestamped picture of the failure. Record the container name or ID, exact image tag, when the loop began, and any recent changes to the image, configuration, host, or workload. Avoid pulling a new image, recreating the container, or changing several settings at once: doing so can erase useful context and make it harder to identify the trigger.
Use Docker’s current CLI documentation to confirm command syntax for your installed version. Inspect the container’s recent output, state and exit information, restart count, and recent Docker events. If you use Compose, also preserve the relevant service configuration and output. Look at the time immediately before each exit and compare repeated attempts: a recurring message can distinguish an application failure from an external stop or host/runtime event.
Sort evidence by where it appears
- Container/runtime: exit state and details, restart history, Docker events, and host or runtime messages around the same timestamps.
- Restreamer application: system log entries and process details, including FFmpeg output.
- Configuration and storage: environment values and the host paths mounted at
/core/configand/core/data. - Image and version: exact image source and tag, plus any recent upgrade, downgrade, or change from a custom image.
- Input and workload: whether the problem continues with a virtual source and whether the deployment uses hardware-specific options.
These categories organize the investigation; none establishes a root cause without matching evidence from your deployment. The official Linux installation guide documents Restreamer as a Docker deployment with persistent mounts.

Read Restreamer’s own logs and test a virtual source
Restreamer’s documented troubleshooting sequence starts by testing with a virtual source, then checking process details and logs. This helps separate a general startup or runtime problem from a failure tied to a particular input or stream process. Follow the current Basic Troubleshooting steps for the release you run.
- Test with a virtual source. If the restart persists, note that result and continue with system and process logs. If it does not, compare the failing workload’s input and any hardware-specific settings with the virtual-source test; the contrast narrows the investigation but does not by itself prove a specific cause.
- Inspect process details and logs. Look for the final application or FFmpeg messages before exit, and correlate their timestamps with Docker’s output and events.
- Check logging configuration. The datarhei Logging page describes available levels from
silentthroughdebugand controls for retained system and FFmpeg log lines. Increase detail only as needed to capture a repeat, then return to an appropriate operational setting.
The datarhei Environment Variables reference lists defaults of info for CORE_LOG_LEVEL, 1000 for CORE_LOG_MAXLINES, 50 for CORE_FFMPEG_LOG_MAXLINES, and 3 for CORE_FFMPEG_LOG_MAXHISTORY. These are documented defaults, not guaranteed values for every release or deployment; confirm them against your deployed version. The reference also says command-line environment values override values in the .env file.

Verify persistent mounts and configuration
Compare the mounts on the running container with the command or Compose configuration used to create it. Restreamer’s Linux installation instructions map host directories to /core/config and /core/data, where configuration state and internal filesystem data are persisted. Check that both paths point to the intended host directories and that the deployment has not accidentally changed them.
If the mount paths differ from the expected configuration, preserve a copy of the existing data before correcting the deployment. Do not delete or replace a host directory as a troubleshooting shortcut: first establish which files and configuration the active container is using.

Check the image and any recent version change
Record the exact image and tag currently deployed and establish whether the problem began after an image or version change. Restreamer’s Official Recommendations advise using official Docker images for production support and to reduce differences in operating systems and dependencies. A custom image or changed tag is worth comparing, but is not proof that it caused the loop.
Be especially careful with migration guidance. The datarhei Migration page says Restreamer v2.4+ switched to FFmpeg 5.1.2 and describes a limited downgrade procedure for problems involving that version break. It also says processes created with the newer version cannot be restored by that procedure. Back up configuration and verify the applicable version history before considering a downgrade; do not treat this as a universal repair.

Why the restart policy is not a fix
The Linux installation example uses --restart=always, which tells Docker to restart Restreamer after a crash or device reboot. That behavior can keep retrying after an exit, but it does not explain or repair the condition that caused the exit. Preserve the policy while diagnosing unless you have a specific operational reason to change it; focus on the timestamped exit evidence and application logs.
Troubleshoot by matching the symptom to evidence
- Docker shows repeated exits but Restreamer logs are uninformative: capture more detailed logging using the deployed version’s documented settings, then correlate system and FFmpeg output with Docker events.
- The virtual source works but the normal workload does not: investigate the input and hardware-specific deployment options, comparing their logs with the successful test. The available documentation does not establish a single cause from this symptom alone.
- The loop began after changing versions or images: compare the exact old and new tags, consult version-specific migration notes, and retain a backup before rollback or downgrade.
- Mounts differ from the intended host paths: verify the configuration and data directories before correcting them, preserving existing state rather than starting with an empty path.
- Host or runtime messages coincide with exits: include those messages in the diagnosis; architecture, resource exhaustion, permissions, and hardware compatibility require evidence from the actual host and are not confirmed causes by themselves.
If the virtual-source test and log review do not resolve the problem, Restreamer’s troubleshooting guidance recommends opening a GitHub issue with a detailed description and process report attached. Include the exact image tag, relevant configuration with secrets removed, timestamps, Docker state/events, and application/process logs so others can compare the evidence.
