For the YouTube-facing connection, use RTMP or, preferably when available, RTMPS. YouTube’s encoder guidance documents RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encryption; Restreamer’s lower stated SRT latency does not establish that YouTube accepts SRT as direct ingest. You can still use SRT on a separate leg—for example, from an SRT-capable source into Restreamer—then publish from Restreamer to YouTube over the protocol YouTube provides.
Which protocol should you use for YouTube?
Set the Restreamer Publication Service’s YouTube destination to the stream URL and key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the RTMPS URL when the current YouTube stream configuration offers it and your Restreamer setup supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected with TLS/SSL. The official encoder guidance reviewed here documents RTMP/RTMPS; it does not list SRT as a general YouTube ingest protocol. That is a limit of the documented configuration, not proof that no private, beta, or future option exists. Unless both current products explicitly offer and document direct SRT ingest, use RTMP/RTMPS for the final leg.
The important distinction is where a protocol is used. Choosing SRT for a source-to-Restreamer connection does not mean the outgoing YouTube connection is SRT. Confirm the protocol and destination shown for each leg independently.
SRT vs. RTMP/RTMPS in Restreamer

Restreamer’s publication documentation also lists HLS at a minimum of 10–30 seconds, depending on configured latency. These are vendor-stated protocol figures, not a like-for-like independent test of the whole route to YouTube.

Configure the YouTube publication
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream, then retrieve the stream URL and stream key for that configuration. YouTube describes the key as the address and credential that let an encoder send its feed; treat it like a password.
- Add a Publication Service in Restreamer. Enter the YouTube destination details and save the valid streaming ID/key as described in Restreamer’s YouTube guide. Use the URL and protocol shown by the current YouTube stream configuration; do not substitute Restreamer’s internal listening ports.
- Choose RTMPS when available. RTMPS encrypts the connection using TLS/SSL. If the encoder reports a connection error, check that the URL uses
rtmpswhere appropriate and verify the supplied server URL and port against Live Control Room. - Start and verify the publication. Start the Restreamer publication and check the YouTube Live Control Room stream health. Confirm that the intended event receives video and audio before relying on the stream for a long run.
If an SRT source feeds Restreamer
Keep this as a separate inbound leg from Restreamer’s YouTube publication. Restreamer documents SRT over UDP, with port 6000 as its default server port. If using Docker, expose the port as UDP—for example, the Quick Start’s mapping uses a /udp suffix. Restreamer also provides optional token and passphrase controls for this SRT connection. Check the current installation’s settings and firewall or host networking rules so UDP traffic can reach the listener.
Once Restreamer receives the source, configure the outgoing YouTube Publication Service separately with YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS URL and key. The SRT listener port is not a replacement for YouTube’s stream URL.

Set bitrate, resolution, and upload headroom
Choose output settings to fit both the available upload bandwidth and the quality you want to send. YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following examples:
- For 1080p at 30 fps using H.264: 5 Mbps.
- For 1080p at 30 fps using AV1 or H.265: 10 Mbps.
- For 1080p at 60 fps using H.264: 6 Mbps.
- For 1080p at 60 fps using AV1 or H.265: 12 Mbps.
These are YouTube guidance figures, not a guarantee that a particular source, network, or encoder will remain stable at those settings. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and motion and monitoring stream health. Its network tips recommend 20% upload headroom. If you use primary and backup encoders, account for both feeds as well as that headroom; test the actual outbound connection rather than relying on advertised download speed.

Keep a 24/7 stream dependable
No transport setting alone guarantees an uninterrupted stream. The source, host, power, internet connection, Restreamer process, and YouTube ingest are all potential failure points.
- Restreamer provides process reconnect controls, and its Quick Start shows Docker restart behavior. Treat these as recovery aids, not proof of end-to-end uptime.
- Test backup-encoder failover before depending on it, and monitor the stream while it is running, as YouTube recommends.
- Run an advance test with the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and motion. Verify the outgoing YouTube feed, not just the local source preview.
- Keep a local recording if the program must be preserved in full. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For an ongoing channel, consider ending and restarting events on a deliberate schedule and confirm archive behavior for the actual configuration.
Common problems and fixes
YouTube does not connect when Restreamer is set to SRT
The outgoing YouTube leg may be using a protocol YouTube’s documented encoder settings do not list. Set the Publication Service to the RTMP/RTMPS destination from Live Control Room. Keep SRT only on a leg where the source, Restreamer, or recipient actually supports it.

RTMPS connection fails
Check the exact URL, server address, and port supplied by the current YouTube stream configuration. Confirm the URL uses rtmps when that is the offered destination and supported by the encoder. Do not replace the YouTube destination with Restreamer’s internal port defaults.
The SRT source cannot reach Restreamer
Confirm that the listener is configured for SRT and that UDP traffic can reach it. Restreamer’s documented default is port 6000; a Docker mapping must specify UDP. Check the optional token or passphrase if either is enabled.

The stream becomes unstable at the chosen quality
Reduce bitrate or resolution, check the actual upload capacity, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Retest with similar motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
A long-running event has no complete YouTube replay
YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Preserve a local recording or use planned event intervals if a complete archive is important.
