You can use Restreamer on a Raspberry Pi to send a camera, network video source, or existing RTMP/SRT feed to YouTube Live. The documented setup is Raspberry Pi OS, Docker, the Restreamer container, a source and audio configuration, and YouTube publication through Restreamer’s Publication Service. That gives you a self-hosted stream; it does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
What the Raspberry Pi setup does—and what it does not guarantee
The Pi hosts Restreamer, which receives or provides access to a video source and publishes it to YouTube. YouTube receives the resulting live stream. You can make the setup run continuously, but the official documentation does not provide an uptime guarantee, an endurance benchmark, or a promise that any particular Pi will handle every source indefinitely. Reliability depends on the whole chain: source, Pi, power, network, Restreamer and YouTube.
The official Restreamer Raspberry Pi installation guide names Raspberry Pi 3 and Pi 4 as suitable hosts and identifies the Pi 3 Model A+, Pi 3 Model B+, and Pi 4 Model B as verified models. It describes ARM32v7 and ARM64v8 container options. It does not compare sustained encoding performance between models.
Choose the source before installing
You do not need a Pi camera unless you want to stream directly from one. Restreamer’s setup wizard supports several kinds of input, including hardware camera sources and network streams. Select a source that matches your equipment and workflow:

- Raspberry Pi camera: Use the active Pi camera input for a camera connected to the Pi.
- USB camera: Choose the USB video-device path for a compatible camera connected to the Pi.
- Network video: The wizard supports HTTP, HTTPS (including HLS and DASH), RTP, RTSP, RTMP and SRT inputs.
- Existing feed: Restreamer has paths for hardware/internal RTMP and its internal SRT server, useful when another device or application supplies the feed.
The official Restreamer user-guide index also links to its Raspberry Pi camera guidance and describes sending configured sources to YouTube. A source that already supplies an encoded stream differs from one that needs processing; the documentation does not publish Pi model benchmarks for these cases. Choose an available video profile that suits the source, then test the resulting stream rather than assuming a particular Pi can process every format or resolution.
Install Restreamer on Raspberry Pi
- Install Raspberry Pi OS. Write the latest Raspberry Pi OS image to a memory card, following the official installation guide.
- Install Docker. Use Docker’s Debian ARM installation instructions linked from the Restreamer guide. The guide provides ARM container paths, including an arm32v7 hardware-support image and a standard image for arm32v7 and arm64v8. Follow the current guide for the appropriate image and command rather than relying on an old copied image tag.
- Start the Restreamer container. Use the current command in the Raspberry Pi guide. Its example stores configuration at
/core/configand persistent data at/core/data, and publishes ports for the web interface, RTMP/RTMPS and SRT. Keep those persistent directory mappings so configuration and data are retained outside the running container. - Use hardware privileges only when needed. The guide warns that
--privilegedshould be used only when hardware support is required. If your source does not need direct hardware access, do not add it by default. - Open the web interface. Find the Pi’s address on your local network and visit
http://device-ip:8080/ui, replacingdevice-ipwith the actual address of your Pi.
The project README also shows container launch and restart examples, but the current installation guide is the more useful reference for supported models and setup. Restart behavior can help bring the container back after a process or device restart; it is not a guarantee that the stream will never fail.

Configure the source, audio and YouTube publication
- Select and configure your input. In Restreamer’s setup wizard, select the camera, USB device, network stream or internal RTMP/SRT source you chose. Select a video profile that is available from that source.
- Set the audio channel. The wizard allows enabled sound, disabled sound or a silent audio channel. Restreamer recommends a silent channel when the video source has no sound and notes that some services, including YouTube, require an active audio channel. If your source is silent, configure the silent channel option as appropriate and check YouTube’s ingest preview for a valid audio track.
- Configure publication to YouTube. The user-guide index says a configured source can be sent to YouTube through the Publication Service. Follow the current YouTube guide linked there and YouTube’s current live-stream setup to connect your channel and stream key. The available documentation confirms the publication path, but does not establish the current interface fields or encoder settings; use the live instructions shown in your Restreamer and YouTube accounts rather than guessing them.
- Complete the metadata and license prompts. The wizard asks for video metadata and a publication license. Provide accurate information for the content you are streaming, and only publish material you have the right to use.
- Check the YouTube preview before relying on the stream. Confirm that video and audio arrive correctly, then test your chosen source and recovery behavior before treating the setup as unattended.
Prepare for continuous operation
A 24/7 stream is a reliability goal, not an outcome guaranteed by installing Restreamer. The official pages do not give a tested maximum duration, uptime figure, thermal limit, throughput table, power-use figure or network bandwidth threshold for Raspberry Pi models. Avoid assuming that a particular combination of source, profile, Pi and connection will remain stable without testing.
- Keep Restreamer’s configuration and data in the persistent directories described by the installation guide.
- Test what happens after a container restart, a Pi reboot and a network interruption. Confirm whether Restreamer and YouTube resume as you expect.
- Observe the Pi under the actual source and profile you intend to use. A setup that works briefly may not prove it is suitable for continuous unattended operation.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream status after configuring audio and publication, especially if the source is silent.
- Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies. Having a video file or a working technical setup does not establish permission to broadcast it or make a channel eligible for monetization.
Common problems and what to check
- The web interface does not open: Check that the container is running, use the Pi’s current network address, and confirm that the web-interface port is published. The documented address format is
http://device-ip:8080/ui. - A camera does not appear: Confirm that you selected the appropriate Pi camera or USB-device input and that the container has the hardware access required by that source. Use
--privilegedonly if hardware support requires it. - A network source fails to load: Verify the URL, protocol and source availability. Restreamer documents HTTP, HTTPS (HLS and DASH), RTP, RTSP, RTMP and SRT network inputs; make sure you are using the matching input path.
- YouTube reports missing or invalid audio: Revisit the wizard’s audio step. For a source without sound, Restreamer recommends a silent audio channel; then verify the result in YouTube’s ingest preview.
- The stream stops after a restart: Confirm the container restart configuration and persistent directory mappings. Restart behavior helps recover from restarts but does not itself ensure that publication resumes successfully; check Restreamer and YouTube after the event.
- The stream is unstable over time: The official docs do not define a universal Pi performance limit or diagnose your network. Test the actual source and profile, check the network and device during operation, and reduce processing demands or change the source path if the setup cannot sustain the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a Pi or computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. This is a cloud option for uploaded videos, not a camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
