How to Run SRS as a 24/7 YouTube Loop Streaming Server

SRS can receive a looped FFmpeg stream and serve local playback, but YouTube needs its own RTMPS publisher. Here’s how to connect the pieces and plan for 24/7 operation.

You can use SRS as a local media server for a looped video, but SRS alone does not send that video to YouTube. The documented setup is: FFmpeg loops and publishes a file to SRS; SRS provides local playback; a separate, explicitly configured publisher or relay must send the stream to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint. Treat the quick-start as a way to validate the pieces, not as a complete 24/7 production service.

Understand the stream path before starting

The roles and destinations are separate:

  • Media file → FFmpeg: reads and loops the source.
  • FFmpeg → SRS: publishes to SRS’s local RTMP ingest URL.
  • SRS → local preview: exposes playback through supported local endpoints.
  • Publisher or relay → YouTube: sends a stream to YouTube’s own RTMPS endpoint using the channel’s stream credentials.

The SRS getting-started command publishes to rtmp://host.docker.internal/live/livestream. That is an SRS address, not YouTube ingest, and starting the SRS container does not automatically forward the stream to YouTube. See the SRS getting-started guide and YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide for their respective sides of the path.

Start SRS and check local playback

SRS’s Docker quick-start illustrates a container with ports 1935, 1985, and 8080 mapped. These are example values for the documented setup, not a universal production configuration. Follow the current SRS guide for the exact command and environment you are using.

Before adding YouTube, publish a test stream to SRS and check that it plays locally. The guide documents RTMP, HTTP-FLV, and HLS playback addresses. A working local preview confirms that the file-to-FFmpeg-to-SRS path is functioning; it does not confirm YouTube connectivity.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Loop a file into SRS with FFmpeg

The SRS example uses the FFmpeg container and this command pattern:

docker run --rm -it ossrs/srs:encoder ffmpeg
  -stream_loop -1 -re -i doc/source.flv
  -c copy -f flv rtmp://host.docker.internal/live/livestream

-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. -re reads it at its native rate, and -c copy copies the streams rather than encoding them. The example input, doc/source.flv, comes from the SRS source repository; for your own video, make the file available inside the container and replace that path.

Stream copy is appropriate only if the input streams and output requirements are compatible. The quick-start does not establish that every file can be copied into an FLV/RTMP stream. If the media fails to play or publish, inspect its codecs and container, then use an encoding workflow suited to your source instead of assuming the sample command works unchanged.

The flags --rm -it make this a convenient demonstration invocation, not an unattended service. They do not supervise FFmpeg, restart it after a failure, preserve a service log, or alert you when the stream stops.

Configure a separate YouTube RTMPS publisher

  1. Get the current ingest details from YouTube Live setup. Use the ingest URL and stream key provided for your broadcast. Keep the key private; do not put it in a public command, repository, screenshot, or log.
  2. Configure the component that will publish to YouTube. It must receive the live media and target YouTube’s RTMPS address. If SRS is acting as a relay, configure an explicit forwarding/publishing component or SRS configuration for that job. The SRS quick-start above only demonstrates publishing into SRS and local playback.
  3. Use the correct RTMPS endpoint details. YouTube requires an RTMPS URL with the correct endpoint and path, SSL over port 443, and SNI set to the server hostname. A malformed path or missing hostname can prevent connection even if the stream key is valid.
  4. Use the values shown for your live setup rather than hard-coding a copied example. For API-provisioned ingest, YouTube documents the RTMPS address in cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsIngestionAddress. Its guide describes RTMPS as a good choice for ordinary low-latency user content.
  5. Verify both sides. Check the publisher’s connection and YouTube’s live preview/status. A local SRS preview is not proof that YouTube is receiving the stream.

For the RTMPS requirements and API field, consult YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

What a credible 24/7 deployment needs

A loop flag only repeats the input while FFmpeg is running and the source remains readable. Continuous operation also depends on the host, network, media, credentials, SRS, the publishing component, and YouTube’s platform and account state. Build recovery and monitoring around each part rather than treating a successful test as an availability guarantee.

  • Supervision and restart behavior: run SRS and the FFmpeg/publisher processes under a service supervisor or orchestrator, and define what should restart after each process exits.
  • Useful persistent logs: retain logs for SRS and the publisher so connection failures, input errors, and restarts can be diagnosed.
  • Alerts: monitor local SRS health separately from YouTube ingest or live status. Alert on stream loss rather than relying on a viewer to report it.
  • Reconnect testing: deliberately test recovery after a process restart and a network interruption. Confirm that the publisher reconnects and that YouTube resumes receiving the stream as expected.
  • Source continuity: keep the media file available at the configured path and have a recovery procedure for missing, damaged, or replaced content.
  • Credential recovery: document how an authorized operator can update the stream key safely if it is changed or exposed.

The official quick-start examples do not prescribe a complete health-monitoring, reconnect, backup-input, or service-supervision design. Plan and test those pieces for your own deployment; do not infer uninterrupted availability from the sample command.

Choose a host based on the actual workload

SRS’s current project README identifies version 8.0 and lists Linux and macOS support across x86_64 and ARM-family architectures, and recommends Docker. The SRS README is on the mutable develop branch, so verify the current release, image tag, and platform compatibility before deploying. The SRS docs also include RTMP documentation.

A home server or mini PC can host the software, while rented compute is another deployment route. The official documentation does not provide a minimum CPU, memory, or network-capacity table, validate a particular device, or compare hosting costs. Requirements depend on factors such as whether you copy or transcode media and how many streams you run, so size the host against your real workload and test it rather than relying on an unsupported minimum specification.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube loop rather than operating a media-server stack, StreamNeo is a cloud service that keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer at home can be off; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

Each slot runs one always-on stream, includes 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, and supports looping and playlists. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers; the same features apply on every plan, with billing length as the difference. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. UPI and cards are accepted in India, with card checkout worldwide; contact support for five or more slots.

Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. You can also choose a day, week, six months, or year and cancel any time. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
