That central idea gives Nintendo Switch 2 an early standout adventure, though the appeal depends on how much you enjoy exploring and breaking things along the way.
What is Donkey Kong Bananza?
Donkey Kong Bananza is a 3D platforming action-adventure exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, released July 17, 2025. Donkey Kong and Pauline travel through an underground world in pursuit of the Planet Core. Nintendo describes a game built around smashing, digging, throwing and climbing through terrain, with collectibles, challenges and local co-op. Nintendo’s official game page outlines those features.
The terrain is more than scenery to clear. Breaking it can open paths, help you reach new places and provide a way to deal with enemies. That makes destruction a tool for movement and discovery as well as spectacle—the feature that most clearly distinguishes Bananza’s platforming.
Does the destruction stay fun?
Mostly, when it has a purpose. Nintendo Life reviewer Jim Norman praised the game’s varied underground layers, movement, collectibles and challenge courses, and found that the promise of breaking through terrain largely holds up. The best case for the mechanic is its connection to exploration: carving a route or uncovering something gives each smash a reason to matter.

- Explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!
- A brand-new 3D platforming action adventure starring Donkey Kong and Pauline
- Bash through just about anything in groundbreaking exploration! Crash through walls and carve tunnels—the more you smash, the more areas open up to you
- Pair up with Pauline to use Bananza Transformations: smash through obstacles with the raw strength of Kong form, gallop with incredible speed as a Zebra, and more
- Team up with a friend in two-player co-op as Donkey Kong and Pauline! Blast foes and terrain alike with Pauline’s voice as you explore together
The limitation is built into the same idea. If breaking things becomes the goal rather than a means to explore, it can lose its impact. Varied layers, optional collectibles and challenges, route-finding, and Pauline’s transformations help add other objectives. But players who want tightly directed platforming may find the freer destruction less compelling.
Pauline is part of the play, not just the story
Pauline’s singing enables temporary Bananza transformations, giving her a mechanical role in DK’s adventure. Nintendo also says local co-op lets a second player control Pauline. That makes co-op a distinct way to share the game, rather than simply taking turns as another version of Donkey Kong. The official game page describes the transformations and local co-op.

How difficult is it, and what accessibility options are available?
Bananza includes an Assist Mode with automatic path guidance, aim assist, reduced damage and regenerating health. Those options can make the adventure more forgiving or help with navigation and aiming. Nintendo lists them on its official game page; the available details do not specify additional customization beyond those features.
What do reviews say?
Nintendo Life scored the game 9/10. Norman praised its variety, smooth movement, collectibles, challenge courses and play beyond the credits, while noting occasional performance hiccups. His conclusion called it “arguably the Switch 2’s first absolute must-play.” The Guardian’s Matthew Castle likewise emphasized freeform destruction and the game’s status as an ambitious early major single-player Switch 2 release.

- Uncover a wide variety of environments, like forest, canyon, and lagoon, as you delve underground
- Reshape the world as you tear through it, with the help of…an Odd Rock?
Those are favorable critical judgments, not a guarantee that every player will agree. The main reservations in the cited coverage are the possibility that destruction can become repetitive and Nintendo Life’s report of occasional performance issues. Neither review establishes how frequently those hiccups occur across all play conditions.
Is Donkey Kong Bananza worth it?
If you want a Switch 2 adventure organized around playful environmental destruction, exploration and optional challenges, Bananza has a strong case. Its best moments come when smashing terrain changes how you move through the world or helps you discover something, rather than serving as an end in itself. Pauline’s transformations and local co-op add variety, while Assist Mode provides options for a more forgiving experience.

- Full version of game required to use DLC. Sold separately.
It is a less certain fit if you tire quickly of breaking things or prefer a more tightly guided platformer. The cited reviews are strongly positive, but their praise does not erase that trade-off. The evidence here does not establish a direct comparison with Super Mario Odyssey or support a claim that Bananza is definitively better; it supports calling it an early Switch 2 highlight, with “first must-play” best understood as a critic’s opinion.
