FANTASIAN Neo Dimension is best suited to classic JRPG fans who want battles that reward planning rather than simply choosing an attack. Its trajectory-based skills and Dimengeon system give turn-based encounters a tactical twist, while its Normal and Hard options let players choose how demanding the experience should be. The challenge is a selling point, especially on Hard, but reported late-game spikes and control quirks may test players’ patience.

What kind of JRPG is FANTASIAN Neo Dimension?

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension is an enhanced edition of the RPG first released on Apple Arcade in 2021. It is associated with producer Hironobu Sakaguchi and composer Nobuo Uematsu, and its visual identity is built around more than 150 handcrafted dioramas, according to Square Enix’s overview.

That handmade presentation gives the adventure a distinctive look, while the combat keeps it rooted in turn-based JRPG traditions. The enhanced edition adds English and Japanese voiceovers and introduces a Normal difficulty option. Square Enix describes Hard as retaining the original challenge.

How does its combat make the challenge tactical?

Aim skills along a trajectory

Attacks are not limited to selecting a target from a list: some skills let players aim their trajectory to hit enemies positioned along a path. That adds a spatial decision to the familiar turn-based rhythm. The official release announcement highlights this aiming mechanic as a core part of combat.

#1 Best Overall
FANTASIAN Neo Dimension (NSW)
  • The Father of FINAL FANTASY, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and renowned composer Nobuo Uematsu return to deliver an original RPG story.
  • Mechteria—a deathly mechanical infection that robs humans of their emotions and lives—is slowly engulfing the world.
  • The protagonist Leo awakens with only one memory left to him in a strange land abundant with machines.
  • The human world, threatened by mechteria... a machine world, filled with mysteries... and the unseen dimensions that lie beyond both.
  • Using the Warp Device that was left behind, Leo must now embark on an interdimensional journey to reclaim his lost memories and save the world from the mechteria infection.

Manage encounters with the Dimengeon

The Dimengeon system stores encountered enemies so players can face them together in a later battle instead of fighting each group immediately. That changes the pacing of exploration and turns a cluster of stored foes into a deliberate combat encounter. The system is particularly appealing to players who enjoy thinking about how and when to take on multiple enemies.

Is the difficulty a welcome challenge or a frustration?

For a classic JRPG fan who enjoys planning around enemy groups, aiming skills, and adapting to demanding encounters, the challenge framing makes sense. Normal offers a less punishing route, while Hard is intended to preserve the original level of challenge, as Square Enix explains in its overview.

A review excerpt by Chris Shive of Hardcore Gamer, reproduced in a JRPG review thread, calls it “a welcome challenge for anyone who is a fan of classic JRPGs.” The same assessment praises tactical combat, the Dimengeon, music, and story, but flags especially rough difficulty spikes later in Hard mode. It also notes that a couple of characters may grate and that controls could use refinement. Those are one reviewer’s criticisms, not evidence of a universal response.

In practical terms, choose based on what you want from the challenge: Normal is the documented alternative if you would rather not preserve the original difficulty, while Hard is the option for players seeking a more demanding, strategy-led run. The reported spikes make Hard a less comfortable fit if you want a consistently even difficulty curve.

Who is it likely to suit?

  • Classic JRPG fans: The turn-based structure, story, music, and deliberate encounters align with the tastes described in Shive’s review.
  • Tactical combat fans: Trajectory aiming and the Dimengeon offer more to consider than simply selecting a target and repeating a standard attack.
  • Players who value a distinctive visual style: The handcrafted-diorama presentation sets it apart from conventional environments.
  • Players sensitive to control issues or difficulty spikes: The cited review raises both as possible frustrations, especially for those considering Hard.
