Its distinctive hook is commanding an army by playing drumbeat patterns in time, then building and positioning that army for missions. It remains an unusual blend of rhythm and tactics; however, MeriStation’s review reports that the remaster omits the PSP version’s multiplayer, retains low-resolution cutscenes and can have slight timing divergences.
How does Patapon 2 Remastered play?
You do not directly steer each Patapon like a conventional action-game character. Instead, you issue commands by performing drumbeat sequences, chaining rhythms to direct the army. The result asks you to keep time while also making tactical choices about your force and its positioning.

Sony describes six drumbeat types, more than 30 missions and more than 100 items and weapons. These are publisher feature claims, not independently verified counts. The customization gives the rhythm loop a strategic layer: success is not only about keeping the beat, but also preparing an army suited to the task.
Is Patapon 2 Remastered worth playing?
It is most appealing if you want a rhythm game with a strong strategic component rather than a conventional music-game format. MeriStation’s 2020 review praised its visual identity and the lasting appeal of its mix of rhythm and strategy, while scoring it 7/10. That assessment sits alongside meaningful remaster caveats: the review says multiplayer from the PSP version is absent, cutscenes remain low resolution, and some situations show slight input or timing divergences.
#1 Best Overall
- Enhanced Resolution: Crisp and detailed visuals with upgraded graphics
- Improved Textures: Refined and polished visual presentation
- Revised Weapon Crafting: Streamlined system for creating weapons
- Gameplay Enhancements: Various improvements for an optimized experience
- Adjustable Difficulty: Tailor the challenge to your skill level
Those drawbacks matter particularly if you are choosing between this PS4 version and the original PSP game, or if precise rhythm response and multiplayer are priorities. The remaster brings the sequel to PS4, but it does not preserve every part of the original presentation or feature set according to MeriStation’s review. The available evidence does not establish a direct comparison of current performance across hardware.
What changed in the remaster?
Sony announced the PS4 remaster as a full 4K remaster of the 2008 PSP game. Its current US PlayStation Store listing is more specific: up to native 4K resolution applies on PS4 Pro with a compatible 4K display. MeriStation reported 4K and 60 fps on PS4 Pro, and 1080p with occasional stutters on standard PS4; those are the outlet’s review observations, not independent measurements here.
The presentation has limits as well. MeriStation reports that the cutscenes remain low resolution, so the remaster’s higher-resolution gameplay output does not mean every visual element was upgraded equally. The same review notes slight timing or input-lag divergences in some situations, a relevant concern in a game built around executing drumbeat commands accurately.
Does Patapon 2 Remastered have multiplayer?
MeriStation’s February 6, 2020 review reports that the remaster removes the multiplayer functionality available in the PSP version. The official listing describes the game’s missions and army customization but does not advertise multiplayer. If playing with others is essential, do not assume that the PS4 remaster includes the PSP feature.
Platforms, PS5 play and price
Sony lists the game for PS4 and says it can be played on PS5, with possible feature differences and a possible system software update. This is Sony’s US-region listing; check the PlayStation Store for your market and current compatibility details.
Sony’s PlayStation.Blog launch announcement said the game would arrive digitally on PlayStation Store for $14.99 USD on January 30, 2020. That is historical launch pricing, not a current price quote. The US store listing currently displays $14.99, but store prices and availability can change by date and region, so confirm the live listing before buying.
Who should play it?
- Consider it if the idea of rhythm commands tied to army strategy sounds more appealing than a straightforward action or music game.
- Weigh the trade-offs if you want the PSP version’s multiplayer, consistently sharp cutscenes or perfectly dependable timing; MeriStation reported shortcomings in each area.
- Check your setup if resolution matters: Sony’s up-to-4K claim specifies PS4 Pro and a compatible 4K display, while MeriStation’s performance notes are reviewer observations.
Sony identifies DUALSHOCK 4 vibration support. A PS4 controller is relevant for play, but neither the listing nor the review establishes that a particular controller is required or that changing controllers resolves timing issues.
