ICE-Q brings more position-aware AI, responsive animations and skill-based one-timers, while Franchise gains useful management detail. That makes “returns to form” a fair description for some players—not a promise of a sweeping overhaul. Several modes remain familiar, so the value depends heavily on how recently you played the series.

Does ICE-Q make the hockey feel better?
ICE-Q is the central gameplay change. EA describes it as a combination of Next-Gen Vision Control, Empowered AI, Reactive Actions and Skill Based One-Timers. The announced mechanics aim to make movement, teammate decisions and shot execution more responsive to what is happening on the ice. EA’s ICE-Q feature overview
In its review, GamingBolt singled out gameplay as the area of greatest improvement, pointing to AI reactions and positioning, tunable gameplay settings, improved animations and subtle simulation changes. That assessment supports the sense of a better-playing hockey game, but it is one outlet’s judgment rather than evidence of a wider review consensus. GamingBolt’s NHL 25 review
#1 Best Overall
- ICE-Q - This is true hockey intelligence. Built on an all-new logic-driven animation system, ICE-Q responds to contextual events on the ice with unprecedented authenticity and is the foundation of Chel’s gameplay overhaul.
- SKILL BASED ONE-TIMERS – Skill Based One-Timers create authentic gameplay tension as offensive excitement and expectation mix with defensive concern and anticipation, each pass creating unique moments and opportunities for high-scoring probability shots.
- GRUDGE MATCH - Hockey is at its best when the competition is fierce. The all-new Grudge Match System tracks the history of matchups between teams across all major online and offline modes in NHL 25 to add more context, stakes and heat to showdowns with your rivals.
- NEXT-GEN CHARACTERS - The next best thing to the real thing. Thanks to the introduction of Sapien Technology to the NHL franchise and the power of our Frostbite Engine on next-gen consoles, all of NHL 25’s in-game characters have received a serious visual overhaul.
The distinction matters: EA’s feature page explains what ICE-Q is designed to do; GamingBolt offers an independent view of how the changes play. The strongest case for the game is the combined effect of those on-ice refinements, not the feature name alone.
Did Franchise mode improve?
Franchise gets a more informative hub and practical tools for following seasons and running a roster. EA’s deep dive lists past-season box scores, individual player game logs, split statistics and player award histories. It also describes additional contract considerations, conversation-based negotiations and roster-management changes. EA’s Franchise Mode deep dive

- This is true hockey intelligence; Built on an all-new logic-driven animation system, ICE-Q responds to contextual events on the ice with unprecedented authenticity and is the foundation of Chel’s gameplay overhaul
- An on-ice evolution; Next-Gen Vision Control provides fresh abilities, improvements, and a user-initiated skating mode that ups the responsiveness, explosiveness, and expression on the ice for human and AI players alike
- A completely overhauled AI player system heightens CPU skaters’ awareness of other players & positioning on the ice, giving them more fluid & helpful reads to execute in a true-to-life fashion, keeping your tactics in motion during high-paced action
- Skill Based One-Timers create authentic gameplay tension as offensive excitement and expectation mix with defensive concern and anticipation, each pass creating unique moments and opportunities for high-scoring probability shots
- Hockey is at its best when the competition is fierce; The all-new Grudge Match System tracks the history of matchups between teams across all major online and offline modes in NHL 25 to add more context, stakes and heat to showdowns with your rivals
These additions give managers more context for evaluating players and handling negotiations, making Franchise the clearest upgrade away from the rink. They improve how much information the mode offers; they do not, by themselves, establish a wholesale redesign of the career experience.
What else is new in presentation and other modes?
Broadcast presentation
EA lists Grudge Match tracking for matchup history across online and offline play, Impact Players, context-sensitive cinematics and commentary, updated SAPIEN character likenesses, and an Infinite Camera System for varied replay angles. These touches aim to give matchups more context and replays more variety. They are presentation additions, distinct from the underlying ICE-Q gameplay changes. EA’s presentation features

World of Chel and Arcade
World of Chel receives a revised Live Events structure, and Arcade mode returns. EA said Arcade was back in the franchise for the first time since 2017. These are useful additions for players drawn to online events or a less simulation-focused option, but they do not change the central question of whether the annual package feels fresh enough.

Built on an all-new logic-driven animation system, ICE-Q responds to contextual events on the ice with unprecedented authenticity and is the foundation of Chel’s gameplay overhaul. The result? That includes new cloth warp and strand hair updates that deliver authentic, lifelike models.
- HUT GAME MODE: The all-new Wildcard Mode implements unique rulesets per competition cycle, keeping players on their toes and ready to adapt with each and every cycle. Plus, all of the XP earned in Squad Battles, Rivals, and Wild Card are now combined into a single progression path, meaning that every HUT mode rewards you the same, no matter where you play.
Where does NHL 25 still feel familiar?
GamingBolt described Franchise and Be A Pro as stale and said the game remained close to recent entries overall. Its recommendation was more favorable for players who had skipped the last few games than for those coming from the most recent one. That criticism puts the gameplay improvements in perspective: a stronger on-ice feel can coexist with modes that do not feel substantially renewed.
No broad review-score consensus is established here. A positive reaction to ICE-Q and a reservation about annual-release value are not contradictory; they judge different parts of the game.
Best Value
- EA SPORTS NHL 24’s all-new gameplay features bring authentic on-ice action to life.
- Experience the rush and fatigue of a high-pressure game with the Exhaust Engine, where sustained pressure in the attack zone leads to new game-changing effects.
- Chel is more connected than ever with cross-play in all online team play modes, along with HUT Moments, which lets you recreate classic moments in hockey history and today’s biggest plays.
- Flex Moments introduces 75+ new goal celebrations, and a wholly refreshed presentation complements an enriched crowd atmosphere that makes playing the game feel like you’re at the game.
- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription.
Who should consider NHL 25?
- Returning after several missed entries: The on-ice changes and deeper Franchise information are more likely to feel meaningful when you have a longer gap to compare against.
- Coming from the previous game: Expect refinements rather than a clear-cut reinvention. Familiarity across modes may make the yearly value harder to justify.
- Primarily a Franchise player: The added records, player histories and negotiation tools make this the most concrete mode-specific improvement.
- Primarily a Be A Pro player: The available review evidence raises a specific concern that the mode feels stale, so the case for upgrading is weaker on that basis alone.
EA Senior Producer Chris Haluke framed the game as appealing to both veterans and newcomers, saying it offers “a truly immersive NHL experience.” That is EA’s product-side view; the more cautious buying takeaway is to judge the game against your own last NHL release. EA’s ICE-Q feature overview
