Review: Slitterhead Is Unlike Any Other Game

Slitterhead puts players in control of a bodiless hunter who possesses human hosts to move through Kowlong and battle monsters disguised as people. Its unsettling premise is paired with action-focused combat, rather than a conventional survival-horror structure.

Slitterhead stands apart because its hero has no body: Hyoki possesses people, jumps between their bodies to move through Kowlong, and turns them into weapons against monsters hiding in human form. That makes for a horror-soaked action adventure, not a conventional survival-horror game.

What kind of game is Slitterhead?

Slitterhead is a single-player action adventure and the debut game from Bokeh Game Studio, released November 8, 2024. Its setting is Kowlong, where the bodiless Hyoki hunts Slitterheads—monsters that disguise themselves as people. Bokeh’s official product page classifies the game as an action adventure and lists it for one player.

The premise has the shape of horror: monsters are concealed in crowds, and Hyoki must identify and confront them. But the central activity is action built around possession and combat. PC Gamer’s review describes it as an action game that “spits in the eye of survival horror,” emphasizing pulpy, grotesque fights over conventional scares. That is one critic’s framing, rather than a universal genre ruling.

How does possession make it different?

Hyoki has no physical form of its own. It possesses human hosts, switching among them to infiltrate places and fight Slitterheads. In combat, changing bodies is part of the action: the player can move between nearby people rather than controlling a single durable protagonist throughout.

#1 Best Overall
Slitterhead Day 1 Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Take Various Forms and Hunt Slitterheads in the Red Light District
  • Possession-based High Speed Action
  • Thrilling Combat Using the Power of Blood
  • An Original New Offering from Two Industry Titans
  • Day 1 Edition contains a soundtrack CD, 100pg+ artbook, and sticker sheet with the game in a custom box

Hyoki also uses blood-based attacks. Special allies known as Rarities add their own distinctive abilities, giving the possession system more than a traversal function. The result is a game where bodies are both a way to get around and the tools for confronting enemies.

Is it more action or horror?

Both labels describe part of the experience, but they refer to different things. Bokeh calls Slitterhead an action adventure; its monster-in-the-crowd premise and grotesque imagery supply the horror atmosphere. PC Gamer’s review characterizes the actual play as action-forward, with few conventional scares.

Expect possession-based combat and a disturbing setting rather than assuming the game follows the familiar survival-horror pattern of vulnerability, scarce resources, and sustained evasion. PC Gamer also describes its levels as large but not open-world. That is a review observation, not a claim that the game offers an open-world structure.

Where can you play it, and is there a physical edition?

Bokeh lists Slitterhead for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games. The developer says the physical edition is exclusive to PS5; the other listed versions are digital.

Format Platforms What is confirmed
Physical PS5 Bokeh identifies the physical edition as PS5-exclusive.
Digital PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games These platforms appear in Bokeh’s official product information.

For a physical copy, look specifically for the PS5 edition and check a regional retailer for current stock and price. The developer’s November 8, 2024 release announcement listed a $49.99 Standard Edition price at launch; that historical figure is not a current-price quote.

Bokeh-authored Xbox Wire edition details from September 26, 2024 described a planned Deluxe Edition with a digital artbook, an Akira Yamaoka soundtrack, and three days of early access. Those were pre-release details, not confirmation that the edition or its contents remain available now.

What is the current player reception?

Steam showed a “Mostly Positive” rating, with 78% of 1,148 all-time user reviews positive, when accessed October 8, 2026. This is a dated Steam user-review snapshot, not a critic score; both the percentage and review count can change. See the Steam listing for its live store information.

Who is likely to enjoy Slitterhead?

The clearest fit is a player drawn to unusual action mechanics, grotesque monster design, and a setting where the danger can be hiding in an ordinary crowd. The possession system is the defining idea: Hyoki moves between hosts and uses them to engage enemies, while Rarities contribute individual abilities.

Players seeking a traditional survival-horror rhythm should weigh the action emphasis carefully. The horror is part of the world and presentation, but the available descriptions point toward combat rather than a game centered on conventional scares. Bokeh’s official product information lists ratings of ESRB M, PEGI 18, and USK 18.
