The available evidence points to an unusual, puzzle-like take on rhythm combat: Nintendo Life rated the European Switch version 7.7/10, while Steam’s captured English-language user-review snapshot was Very Positive. Those signals are encouraging, but they are not a broad critic consensus or a guarantee that one platform is better for every player.
What kind of rhythm game is Rift of the NecroDancer?
The game turns monster encounters into musical pattern reading. Cadence is pulled into a strange new world, where creatures pour through a Rift and must be fought in time with the music. Nintendo’s listing describes enemies with distinct behaviors: bats, for example, shift lanes when attacked, while tougher foes require multiple hits. That means success depends on reading what each enemy does and responding to its pattern, rather than simply keeping a beat through a fixed sequence.
This keeps the series’ emphasis on rhythm while moving away from the original Crypt of the NecroDancer dungeon-crawling loop. Nintendo Life called its Switch review subject a “fun spin” and “surprisingly puzzley,” and compared the mix to “Guitar Hero had a baby with Ikaruga.” Those are the reviewer’s impressions and analogy, not a formal genre label.
What do the reviews say?
Nintendo Life’s Switch review
Roland Ingram’s Nintendo Life review, published April 7, 2025, scored the European Switch version 7.7/10. The review was based on the handheld/undocked version and praised the blend of rhythm action and puzzle-like decisions. It is a useful perspective on that edition, but a single review cannot establish a complete critical consensus. Read Nintendo Life’s review.

Steam user reviews
At the time of the captured Steam storefront snapshot in 2026, English-language user reviews were labeled “Very Positive”: 93% positive from 3,129 English reviews. This is a changing, language-specific user-review sample, not a critic score or a permanent rating. Check the Steam listing for its current review snapshot.
What music and content does it offer?
Nintendo’s 2025 listing advertised 30+ Rhythm Rift tracks and said more were on the way. It credits Danny Baranowsky, Jules Conroy, Alex Moukala, Josie Brechner, Sam Webster, and Nick Nausbaum. The track count is the listing’s statement at that time, not a guarantee of the current total. Steam’s listing also provides soundtrack and music-pack context, but the available listings do not establish a complete current DLC catalog or a platform-by-platform content-parity comparison.

Should you play on Switch or PC?
The store listings document different platform features, but they do not provide a measured comparison of performance, input latency, or comfort. Choose based on where you want to play and which documented features matter to you.
| What’s documented | PC (Steam) | Nintendo Switch |
|---|---|---|
| Release | February 5, 2025, per Steam. | March 27, 2025; Nintendo lists a digital edition. |
| Play modes and player count | Single-player, per Steam. | One player on a single system; TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, per Nintendo. |
| Listed platform features | Steam Workshop, a level editor, Steam Cloud, and achievements. | Nintendo says Switch 2 behavior is supported. |
| Review evidence covered here | Steam snapshot: 93% positive from 3,129 English reviews at capture time in 2026. | Nintendo Life’s European Switch review: 7.7/10, published April 7, 2025. |
Steam’s Workshop and level editor may appeal if you want the features listed for community and custom-level play. Switch is the documented option for handheld, tabletop, or TV play. Nintendo’s listing does not establish that custom-stage features are absent from Switch, and the available sources do not verify platform performance, latency, accessibility details, physical-edition availability, or current update parity. See Steam’s feature listing and Nintendo’s Switch listing for the platform details.

- NecroDancer fans open to a spin-off that leaves dungeon crawling behind while retaining rhythm-focused play.
- Players who like a puzzle element woven into action, as reflected in Nintendo Life’s review.
- Players who want to use Steam’s listed Workshop and level editor, or who prefer Switch’s listed handheld, tabletop, and TV modes.
If you are choosing by review evidence alone, treat the Switch score and Steam user-rating snapshot as separate signals: they come from different groups, dates, and methods, so they are not directly comparable.
