How to activate the request
Check the Hernand notice board if the quest is not visible
Walkthroughs disagree about whether reading Rhett’s poster on the Hernand notice board is mandatory. They do agree that the conversation with Rhett is required. If the request does not appear when you first approach the smithy, read the poster, leave the board, and speak with Rhett again.
There is also disagreement about the exact earlier-quest requirement. A community wiki lists Turnali’s Request as a prerequisite, while another guide emphasizes the notice-board poster instead. Treat neither condition as universal. If Rhett has no request after you have checked the board, finish the earlier Hernand commission available in your journal, then return to the board and smithy.
Speak with Rhett by the smithy
Rhett is near the smithy in Hernand. Select the dialogue that accepts his request. The task is for two iron ore; you do not need to buy ore or find a special quest item from a merchant.
Step-by-step walkthrough
1. Accept the two-ore objective
After the conversation, confirm that the request is active in the quest journal. If the objective marker is not visible, close the dialogue and reselect Rhett’s Request in the journal. The marker is the safest navigation aid because descriptions place the deposit in the same general area but do not give a single precise landmark beyond Anvil Hill.
2. Follow the marker east from Hernand
Leave Hernand and travel east toward Anvil Hill. The marked deposit is at the base of a cliff. Several guides describe the location as being near the hill rather than on a named road, so do not search every rock around Hernand if the marker is pointing farther east. Stay on the active objective and use the marker’s final position to identify the correct outcrop.
If you switch quests while travelling, the marker can disappear or point to another activity. Re-select Rhett’s Request before checking the terrain. The ore deposit is the one associated with the active objective, not simply any mineable-looking rock you pass on the way.
3. Equip the pickaxe
Open the equipment or tool wheel and select the pickaxe. Merely having the pickaxe in your inventory is not enough: the mining interaction only starts when the tool is equipped and you aim at the deposit.

On PC, PC Gamer’s walkthrough describes F2 to open the tool wheel, Ctrl to aim, and left-click to strike. These are default examples, not guaranteed bindings: custom layouts, accessibility settings, and later patches can change them. Check the current Controls menu if one of those inputs does nothing.
4. Strike the deposit until the ore drops
Face the deposit closely and mine it while the targeting indicator is active. If the swing misses, reposition rather than repeatedly pressing the attack button from a distance. Continue until the deposit yields the quest material. The request requires two ore, so keep mining until the objective or inventory count shows both pieces.
A successful hit does not always put the item directly into an obvious inventory slot. Watch the ground around the outcrop for the dropped ore and move over it to collect it. Leaving immediately after the animation can leave one of the required pieces behind.

5. Verify that both pieces are collected
Before riding or walking away, check the quest objective or inventory and confirm that the count is two. If it still shows one, scan the ground around the deposit and approach the remaining drop. Re-mining another rock elsewhere is unlikely to solve the problem if the original drop is still waiting to be picked up.
6. Follow the new marker to Equinsher Saddlery
Once the ore is collected, the objective changes to the delivery stage. Follow the marker away from the mining site toward Equinsher Saddlery, generally south or southwest of the deposit. The route may not be a straight line because of cliffs and terrain; let the marker lead you around obstacles rather than trying to return to Hernand.
7. Give both ore to Rhett’s assistant
At Equinsher Saddlery, look for Rhett’s assistant and start the interaction. Choose the hand-in dialogue while both pieces are in your inventory. This completes Rhett’s Request. Rhett himself is not the delivery target for this stage, even though he gave you the assignment and is still associated with the smithy.

Preparation before leaving Hernand
This is a short gathering-and-delivery task, so preparation is mostly about keeping the correct objective active. Open the journal after accepting the dialogue and make sure Rhett’s Request, rather than another Hernand activity, is selected. That keeps the marker pointed toward the ore deposit and later refreshes it toward Equinsher Saddlery.
Make room for the requested materials if your inventory is crowded. The guides commonly associate the request with an inventory-related reward, but the exact reward panel can vary, so checking your available space before completion is sensible. You do not need to purchase a separate bag, ore bundle, or special mining item to start the objective.
The pickaxe is the important tool check. Rhett’s request provides or directs you to use one, and the mining interaction begins only after it is equipped. If the tool wheel contains several options, select the pickaxe before you reach the cliff base so you can test the targeting prompt immediately.
Reading the route and the marker
“East of Hernand” and “near Anvil Hill” are useful orientation points, not a substitute for the active marker. The deposit is described at the base of a cliff, so the final approach may require walking around the rock face rather than climbing directly toward the marker. The deposit is visible but cannot be mined
- Equip the pickaxe from the tool wheel; carrying it is not sufficient.
- Aim at the rock until the reticle indicates a valid target. On the reported controller layout, that means holding LB until the reticle is blue.
- Move closer and adjust your angle around the cliff base. A marker can point to the area while the interaction point is on the opposite side of the outcrop.
- Check the Controls menu if you changed bindings or are using a different input device.
The quest still says one ore is missing
Search the ground immediately around the deposit. Ore drops must be collected after the strike; the mining animation alone does not guarantee that both pieces entered your inventory. Confirm the count before leaving the area.

Do not assume that returning to the quest giver is the correct hand-in. Once both ore are collected, the intended recipient is Rhett’s assistant at Equinsher Saddlery. Reselect Rhett’s Request in the journal if the route appears stale, then follow the updated marker to the saddlery.

The assistant will not accept the ore
- Verify that the quest objective says to deliver the ore and that the inventory count is two.
- Check that you are interacting with Rhett’s assistant at Equinsher Saddlery rather than another worker nearby.
- If you changed active quests during travel, select Rhett’s Request again and approach the assistant with the quest marker active.
