Rhinogrund is an armored beast in Hollow Knight: Silksong. To beat it, avoid relying on attacks against its plated front: strike from behind as it rushes or lands, or use a tool or Silk Skill that can pierce its defense. Its reported encounters are in Far Fields and the Memorium, with another in Far Fields during Act 3.
How to beat Rhinogrund
Rhinogrund’s front armor blocks many ordinary Needle attacks and tools, according to the community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki. The practical answer is to change either your angle or your attack: get behind it when it charges past or lands from a leap, or use a tool or Silk Skill that the wiki says can pierce the protection. Hornet’s journal note, reproduced on the wiki, says: “Certain tools and skills can pierce its defences. I should adjust my strategy as needed.”
Watch for the opening after a forward rush or spinning leap, then attack the exposed rear rather than trading blows with the armored front. Avoid assuming one approach is best for every loadout; the available mechanics are community-wiki descriptions, not independently verified or patch-specific testing.
Rhinogrund’s attacks
The Hollow Knight Wiki describes four behaviors. Learning their tells helps you choose when to evade and when to attack:

- Charge: It rushes forward and stops if it gets behind Hornet or hits a wall. Let it pass, then target its rear.
- Whirling Leap: It jumps while spinning. Avoid the landing, then look for a chance to hit from behind.
- Ground Wrench: It digs its horn into the ground and throws debris toward Hornet. Evade the debris before moving back in.
- Stamp: It briefly feints before choosing another move. Do not commit to an attack just because the feint looks like a recovery.
Where to find Rhinogrund
The community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki lists three live Rhinogrunds per save, across these encounters. The first requires a hidden approach and a platforming challenge.

The wiki also describes a conditional outcome for the first encounter: if you open its gate from the inside before killing Rhinogrund, it can leave and later appear in Mort’s shop once the wiki’s stated conditions are met. Treat this as a reported event branch, not a guaranteed result in every playthrough.

Health and Hunter’s Journal
The Silksong Wiki lists Rhinogrund at 150 health and says two defeats are required for its Hunter’s Journal entry. These are secondary-source figures, not officially corroborated here, so check the in-game journal if exact values matter to your playthrough. The journal describes it as a “Long-horned beast of Pharloom’s lowlands” that uses its horn to impale and wrench up debris.
The detailed locations, mechanics, encounter count, and journal figures above come from community-maintained references rather than official Team Cherry material. Their patch-specific status is not established.
