rhttpaa.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows library associated with the RPC/HTTP Downlevel Side-by-side Runtime. If rhttpaa.dll is missing on Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not download a replacement DLL first: repair Windows or the original program that is requesting this legacy component.
What rhttpaa.dll is
Microsoft documents rhttpaa.dll in an update for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009, where it was supplied with Remote Desktop and CredSSP-related components. The documented package entry identifies this build as:

Microsoft’s documentation does not prove that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation contains this file, nor does it establish one universal System32, SysWOW64, or application-folder location. A legacy executable can request the DLL even when the current Windows release does not normally install it.
The official POSReady documentation and package are available through Microsoft’s support article and the Microsoft Download Center.

What the error actually means
You may see any of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because rhttpaa.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because rhttpaa.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting rhttpaa.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “rhttpaa.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader messages. They do not all mean exactly the same thing.
- Missing or not found usually means Windows cannot locate the requested file.
- Could not be loaded can mean the file exists but one of its dependencies is missing or damaged.
- Not designed to run on Windows often indicates a wrong architecture, incompatible version, corruption, or an unofficial replacement.
- The specified module could not be found can refer to a dependency of
rhttpaa.dll, not necessarilyrhttpaa.dllitself.
If only one old application produces the error, that program may be invoking a legacy Remote Desktop or RPC/HTTP component directly. If several Windows components fail, system-file corruption becomes more likely.
Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
Start with Windows Update because the correct repair may be delivered as part of the operating system or the affected component.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, select Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on it.
- Launch the application again.
Do not assume that an update for modern Windows will install the legacy POSReady file. Microsoft’s verified package association is specifically for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the correct automatic repair sequence when the file or one of its dependencies belongs to Windows.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which gives System File Checker a usable source for replacement files.
Run System File Checker
In the same administrator window, run:
sfc /scannow
Let the scan reach 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected application.
A successful result normally says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing. If it says that some files could not be repaired, continue to the next section rather than copying a DLL from the internet.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows repair issues and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by its full version; reinstalling the program that owns this dependency remains the definitive fix when the problem is application-specific.
If SFC cannot repair rhttpaa.dll
First, restart and run the two commands once more from an administrator Command Prompt. If the result is unchanged:
- Open Event Viewer from Start.
- Select Windows Logs → System.
- Look for entries from Windows Resource Protection or servicing activity.
- Note whether the failure concerns
rhttpaa.dllor another dependency. - Try the commands again in Safe Mode if normal Windows processes are interfering.
- If corruption continues, use an in-place repair or supported Windows reinstallation path.
SFC’s detailed servicing information is recorded in the CBS log, commonly at:

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the program that reports the error
If the error appears when starting only one application, game, launcher, or old Remote Desktop utility, repair that program before changing Windows folders.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its menu button, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the software developer or reinstall from the original trusted media.
- Restart again and test.
Some older programs have their own Repair option in Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. Select the program, choose Change, and follow its repair wizard.

A clean reinstall is especially important if the application was partially removed, moved between drives, restored from a backup, or updated unsuccessfully. An installer can restore the complete dependency set and the correct architecture instead of leaving one DLL in an arbitrary folder.

Antivirus software may remove a damaged, altered, or suspicious file. A matching filename alone does not prove that the file is genuine.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the relevant detection.
- Inspect the original path, detection name, and date.
- Scan the computer before restoring anything.
Restore or allow the file only when you can establish that it came from the original Microsoft-signed installation or a verified application installer. If Defender identifies it as a threat, do not restore it merely because an application displays a missing-DLL message. Remove the malware and reinstall the affected component from official media.
Microsoft explains the Protection History workflow in its Windows Security guidance.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when rhttpaa.dll stopped working immediately after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or other system change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs while preserving personal files. It does not remove every type of malware and it may not be available if protection was disabled.
You can also open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore instructions.
Check architecture and version before replacing anything
The officially documented POSReady build is 32-bit x86. That does not mean every copy named rhttpaa.dll is interchangeable.
A 32-bit library cannot simply replace a 64-bit build, and a file from another Windows release may produce the “not designed to run on Windows” message. Windows also uses architecture-dependent loader behavior, so do not assume that SysWOW64 is simply “the 32-bit folder” or that copying the file into System32 is correct.
Do not copy rhttpaa.dll into:
System32without identifying the exact Windows build and packageSysWOW64based only on the filename- The application folder as a workaround
- Any folder recommended by a random DLL archive
An application-folder copy can make that program load an incompatible or malicious DLL while leaving the underlying installation damaged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or drivers?
There is no verified evidence that rhttpaa.dll is a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Installing those packages is therefore not the primary fix for this error.
Likewise, reinstalling a graphics or motherboard driver is not a direct repair for this DLL. Check drivers only when Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Expand the affected device category.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Avoid removing a working driver just because rhttpaa.dll is missing.

When several devices have stale drivers, manually identifying the correct model, revision, and architecture can take longer than the DLL troubleshooting itself. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, with installation handled by the full version; it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that actually requests rhttpaa.dll.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong here
Do not run:
regsvr32 rhttpaa.dll
as a general repair step. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore missing files, repair the component store, or fix a broken dependency. There is no verified evidence that rhttpaa.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration tool in its command reference. A failed registration message does not diagnose the original problem.
Should you download rhttpaa.dll manually?
No. Random DLL downloads carry three separate risks:
- The file may contain malware or have been tampered with.
- Its version may not match your Windows release.
- Its architecture may be wrong.
- It may not include the dependencies that caused the error.
- Copying it may conceal a damaged application or Windows installation.
Use Windows Update, DISM and SFC, the original application installer, or the applicable Microsoft package for the exact legacy operating system. Do not treat a standalone DLL as a normal Windows repair source.
The POSReady 2009 exception
Microsoft’s strongest provenance for rhttpaa.dll is the Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 update associated with Remote Desktop Web Connection and CredSSP. That package requires the applicable POSReady system and a restart.
If you are maintaining a POSReady 2009 or other Windows XP-derived installation:
- Confirm the operating system and architecture.
- Use the applicable Microsoft package rather than a generic DLL archive.
- Install it through the official Microsoft download channel.
- Restart the system.
- Test the Remote Desktop component again.
If the computer runs an unsupported Windows release, continued DLL replacement is a poor long-term strategy. Preserve application data, plan migration to a supported Windows release, and use legacy software only in an appropriately isolated environment.

FAQ
Is rhttpaa.dll included with every version of Windows?
No. The verified Microsoft package association is for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. Do not assume that Windows 10 or Windows 11 normally includes the same file.
Does it belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
There is no single verified path that applies to every Windows build or application. The correct location depends on the component and loader context. Do not choose a folder by guesswork.
Is this a Visual C++ runtime error?
Not according to the available evidence. rhttpaa.dll is associated with the RPC/HTTP Downlevel Side-by-side Runtime and legacy Remote Desktop components.
Why does “module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
A dependency of rhttpaa.dll may be missing, or the file may be incompatible or corrupted. DISM, SFC, and repairing the calling application are safer than replacing the named file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I fix it with System Restore?
Yes, when the failure began after a recent system change and an appropriate restore point exists. System Restore is not a substitute for malware removal or migration from an unsupported operating system.
What is the safest final fix?
Repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC, then repair or reinstall the program that requests the DLL. For POSReady 2009, use the applicable Microsoft update rather than an unrelated DLL download.
