The practical decision is therefore about branch stability, your hardware and mod setup—not learning a different game. The figures below are Ludeon’s own test results, not independent benchmarks, and the announcement leaves the stable-release date, detailed system requirements, engine architecture and migration implementation unspecified.

Unity and Waylith are implementation layers beneath RimWorld’s familiar interface and simulation. Ludeon’s stated goal is continuity: players should still see the same game and interact with the same systems. The announcement does not describe a new rendering style, redesigned menus, altered rules or a new content model.

That distinction matters because an engine migration can sound like a sequel or remaster. Here, the announced change is primarily technical. If you are deciding whether to try the beta, focus on loading behavior, simulation speed, hardware support and mod stability rather than expecting new graphics or mechanics.
What is not explained
The announcement does not say how Waylith is structured, which Unity subsystems were replaced, how save serialization was preserved, or how the mod API is implemented. It also does not provide a component-by-component performance breakdown. A community question such as “How did you change the engine and make it mod/save compatible?” cannot be answered from the announcement without speculation. The defensible answer is that Ludeon reports compatibility, but has not published the engineering method.
Performance: what Ludeon measured and how to read it
Ludeon reports a broad improvement rather than one universal benchmark. Its summary says performance was improved by 2–4× in its tests. One named late-game colony test measured 2.2× better performance. In a separate large-load example, a pack containing 1,500 mods loaded in 6 minutes instead of 14 minutes.

Those figures are useful illustrations of the studio’s test cases, not guarantees for every installation. Ludeon explicitly says individual improvements vary with the player’s PC and mods. A lightly modded colony, an older processor, a graphics-heavy setup and a heavily scripted late-game save can respond differently. The announcement also does not identify test hardware, operating-system versions, exact mod lists beyond the 1,500-mod example, measurement methodology or confidence ranges.

Where the reported gains apply
- Startup: the game is reported to launch faster.
- Large mod lists: loading a game with many mods is reported to take less time.
- Map generation: creating a map is included among the faster operations.
- World generation: generating a world is also reported to improve.
- General ticks per second: Ludeon says normal simulation processing is faster in its tests.
“Ticks per second” affects how quickly the simulation advances, especially when a colony becomes large or heavily scripted. It is not the same as a promise of a particular frame rate or a guarantee that every visual effect will render faster.
How to evaluate your own result
- Record how long your current 1.6 installation takes to reach the main menu and load a representative save.
- Use the same save, mod order and game-speed settings when testing 1.7.
- Compare a normal colony period and a known late-game slowdown rather than relying on a single short observation.
- Note whether a difference comes from loading, simulation speed, map generation or visual rendering; they are separate workloads.
- If behavior changes, report the reproducible setup through the official development Discord, as Ludeon requests for issues that differ from 1.6.
Do not treat a personal result as proof that the studio’s range applies universally, and do not treat the studio’s range as a promise for your machine.
Will your old RimWorld save work in 1.7?
Ludeon says you do not need a special conversion step: a 1.6 save should load in 1.7, and a save made in 1.7 should work if you return to 1.6. This is the announced cross-version behavior and is intended to let players test the beta without abandoning an existing colony.

A cautious test procedure
- Keep your current 1.6 installation and save files intact. Make a separate backup before experimenting, even though Ludeon says no special action is required.
- Write down the active mod list and load order for the colony you want to test.
- Opt into 1.7 only on a copy of the installation or with a backup you can restore.
- Load the colony, check pawns, research, bills, schedules, maps and mod-provided systems, then save under a clearly identifiable name.
- Do not overwrite the only copy of a valuable colony while you are comparing branches.
- If you return to 1.6, verify that the original save still opens and that the tested save behaves as expected.
This procedure is a risk-management practice, not an additional requirement stated by Ludeon. The official claim remains that the versions are cross-compatible.
Do RimWorld mods need to be updated for Waylith?
Ludeon says the vast majority of mods work on 1.7 without changes from their authors. Players may nevertheless see a yellow “potentially unsupported” label because the game version number changed. According to the studio, that warning by itself does not mean the mod is broken.
The wording is deliberately qualified. “Vast majority” is not “every mod,” and the announcement does not provide a list of exceptions or certify each item in the workshop. A mod can still have a genuine bug, an untested interaction or a dependency that has not been updated.

- Check whether the mod loads and whether its core features work in a test colony.
- Look for errors, missing textures, broken gizmos or changed behavior rather than judging the yellow label alone.
- Test a copy of an important save before committing to the unstable branch.
- Keep the 1.6 setup available if a critical mod is not ready.
- Tell the mod author about a reproducible failure, including the game version, mod list and steps that trigger it.
What Waylith changes for mod authors
For authors, Ludeon highlights capabilities rather than a required rewrite. The studio says Waylith supports the latest C# language features, can make complex mods easier to write without negatively affecting game performance, and makes large visual changes and complex custom effects more accessible.

Those are opportunities, not a published technical contract. The announcement supplies no exhaustive API reference, namespace mapping, rendering pipeline description, serialization specification or list of deprecated calls. Authors should not infer a particular architecture from the engine’s name.
Recommended author workflow
- Run the mod on 1.7 with representative saves and the dependencies used by players.
- Check startup, loading, save/load cycles, game-speed behavior, UI, world and map interactions, and any custom rendering or effects.
- Investigate actual errors instead of assuming the yellow player-facing label identifies a defect.
- Publish a version marked 1.7-compatible after testing so the warning can disappear for players.
- If behavior differs from 1.6 and the cause is unclear, use the official development Discord as Ludeon requests.
Marking a version compatible communicates that the author tested it; it does not imply that every mod combination has been validated.

Ludeon warns that computers more than 10 years old may not run 1.7. The statement is a caution, not a universal cutoff: it does not say that every machine of that age will fail, nor that every newer computer will receive a particular speedup.
No minimum or recommended CPU, GPU, memory, storage, operating-system or driver specifications were included. The announcement also does not identify which component causes a failure or which upgrade would solve it. Generic hardware-shopping advice would therefore go beyond the available information.

A sensible compatibility check
- Use the unstable branch only if you can tolerate testing and possible incompatibilities.
- Try a representative save and mod list, not just a fresh empty map.
- Record crashes, freezes, missing graphics and severe simulation slowdowns separately.
- Include your hardware and operating-system details when reporting an issue through the development Discord.
- Remain on 1.6 if 1.7 does not run reliably and you need the game for an active colony.
How to access the 1.7 beta on Steam
At the time of Ludeon’s October 12 announcement, 1.7 was available through Steam’s unstable beta branch while the main branch remained on 1.6. The studio did not announce a date for moving 1.7 to the stable/main branch. Steam branch labels can change, so check the current state before following these announcement-time instructions.
- Open your Steam library and select RimWorld.
- Open the game’s Properties window.
- Choose the Betas section.
- Select the 1.7 unstable beta branch if it is still offered.
- Allow Steam to update the installation, then launch the game and verify the displayed version.
To return to the normal release, use the same Betas control and select the default or main branch that Steam currently lists. The exact labels may change after a stable release.
Should you switch now or wait?
Try 1.7 now if
- You want to test the reported loading or simulation improvements.
- You can keep backups and a working 1.6 setup.
- Your mod list is small enough to test methodically, or you are willing to troubleshoot a large one.
- Your computer is not near the age range Ludeon flags, or you are prepared to report compatibility problems.
Stay on 1.6 for now if
- Your colony depends on mods that have not been tested.
- You cannot risk a branch change on your only save copy.
- You need a stable release and do not want to use an unstable beta.
- Your computer is more than 10 years old and you have no time for compatibility testing.
Because Ludeon says saves work in both directions, the main practical safeguard is maintaining a recoverable 1.6 setup while you test. That lets you evaluate Waylith on your own hardware without treating the beta as an irreversible migration.

What remains unknown about Waylith
Several questions are intentionally unanswered by the announcement:
- The engine’s internal architecture and which Unity systems it replaces.
- The engineering process that preserves save and mod compatibility.
- A complete technical migration guide or compatibility API specification.
- Detailed minimum and recommended system requirements.
- Which operating systems or platforms are affected by the older-PC warning.
- Independent performance measurements using named hardware and repeatable methods.
- The date when 1.7 will leave the unstable branch.
Until Ludeon publishes technical documentation or further testing data, these should be treated as open questions rather than filled in with assumptions.
Bottom line for players and modders
RimWorld 1.7 is an engine transition with a deliberately familiar player-facing result. Ludeon says the game looks and plays the same, reports faster performance in its own tests, and states that saves remain usable across 1.6 and 1.7. Most mods are expected to continue working, although authors should test them and mark them compatible rather than relying on the absence of a warning. The immediate trade-off is release maturity: at announcement time, 1.7 was an unstable Steam beta, while 1.6 remained the main branch. Test with backups, judge performance on your own setup, and treat undocumented engine details and hardware requirements as unknown.
