RimWorld: Anomaly is a released horror-themed expansion that adds paranormal threats, investigation, entity containment, and a new endgame centered on a machine intelligence. It launched on April 11, 2024, alongside the free 1.5 update; it is not an upcoming expansion. Ludeon’s release announcement
What does RimWorld: Anomaly add?
Anomaly shifts the colony’s troubles beyond familiar survival crises and combat. Its horror scenarios revolve around a dark monolith that awakens a powerful machine intelligence, bringing increasingly strange phenomena to the map. What new and horrific events are in Anomaly?
The official examples range from threats that stalk or infiltrate a settlement to phenomena that alter how colonists behave. The expansion’s roster includes:
- An invisible hunter that returns at night.
- A vast flesh organism that spreads across the map.
- A mind-controlling parasite that can infiltrate colonists.
- A golden cube that induces obsession.
- Obelisks with unpredictable effects.
- Shambling undead, cultists, fleshbeasts, and machine-like enemies.
These examples give Anomaly a different texture from a straightforward wave of attackers: some dangers invite investigation and containment, while others create paranoia, infestation, or sudden combat.

How do investigation and containment work?
The central progression loop is to study the phenomena and prepare to confront them. Players can build containment facilities, capture entities, research them, and use what they learn to harness their powers. Anomaly also introduces bioferrite, a resource for experimental weapons and other void-powered tools, as well as psychic rituals that can affect enemies and the world. Ludeon’s official Anomaly page
What is Anomaly’s endgame?
The threats escalate toward a world overtaken by darkness and a final confrontation with the machine god, according to Ludeon’s description. Do you need RimWorld to play Anomaly?
Yes. Anomaly is an expansion pack, not a standalone game, and requires the base game RimWorld. Ludeon’s product page states: “This is an expansion pack for RimWorld. You’ll need RimWorld in order to play.” Official product page

Anomaly released on April 11, 2024, alongside the free RimWorld 1.5 update. At the time of research on October 8, 2026, Ludeon’s product page listed the digital expansion at $24.99 USD, with access through Steam or a DRM-free purchase. At launch, Ludeon said unmodded 1.4 saves would load in 1.5 and explained that players who wanted to remain on 1.4 could choose the named Steam beta branch. The studio also warned at the time that some mods had not yet been updated for 1.5. That was a release-era warning, not a claim about present-day compatibility; mod support depends on the game version and the individual mod. Ludeon’s release announcement
