There is no confirmed fix that applies to every RimWorld crash on Steam Deck. First identify whether RimWorld closes, freezes while SteamOS still works, or makes the entire Deck restart; then update SteamOS, restart, and test the game without mods or third-party apps. These low-risk checks help narrow the cause without assuming that a game crash and a device restart are the same problem.
First, identify what is crashing
Note exactly what happens and when. RimWorld may close back to the Library, freeze while SteamOS remains usable, display an error, or coincide with the whole Deck restarting. Record whether the issue started after a RimWorld, mod, or SteamOS update. A full-device restart is a broader system symptom; the title alone is not enough to diagnose a hardware fault.
- RimWorld closes or freezes: Start with the game and its software environment.
- The entire Deck restarts or remains unstable: Follow the system checks below and seek Steam Support if instability continues.
Update SteamOS, restart, and rule out third-party apps
Steam’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide recommends installing available software updates and restarting when addressing system instability. If Steam applications remain unstable, Steam also recommends disabling or exiting third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode.
- Install any available Steam Deck software updates.
- Restart the Deck and try RimWorld again.
- If instability remains, exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, restart, and retest.
When changing settings or software, alter one variable at a time and note whether the symptom changes. That makes it easier to distinguish a game-specific issue from broader instability.

Test RimWorld without mods
Temporarily disable mods and launch the game, keeping track of the result before reinstalling anything or changing multiple settings. If the unmodded game behaves differently, that is useful evidence about your setup, not proof that mods are the cause in every case.
There is a documented historical reason to consider mod compatibility: in an April 6, 2022 Steam announcement, Ludeon Studios said a Steam Deck integration update required a newer Steamworks API and broke compatibility with a few mods at that time. The announcement describes that past update; it does not establish the cause of a present-day crash.

Community reports illustrate how outcomes can vary. In a July–August 2025 Steam discussion, players described missing menus, suggested forcing Proton, and one player later reported that reinstalling mods resolved their case. A separate 2026 Reddit discussion described a modded game alongside device restarts, but did not establish a cause or a confirmed remedy. Treat these as individual experiences, not guaranteed fixes: Steam discussion and Reddit discussion.
Check compatibility details and consider a Proton test
Look at RimWorld’s Steam Deck compatibility details in its Steam Library entry or Steam store listing. Valve explains that compatibility categories and details are available there and that the review process is ongoing: Steam Deck compatibility. A compatibility listing describes expected behavior; it cannot guarantee that every mod combination or later update will be free of crashes.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
If the problem persists, Steam Support’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests trying a different Steam Play compatibility tool, including the latest Proton version. This is a general Steam-game troubleshooting step, not a confirmed RimWorld-specific cure.
- Open RimWorld’s Library entry in Steam and open its Menu/Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then select a current Proton tool and test the game.
Forcing Proton can change which game build Steam installs. If the installed native Linux version is replaced by a Windows build, Steam’s guide says Steam may download the Windows version. Treat this as a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix; if it does not help, return to the prior setting and retest.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What to record before asking for help
If RimWorld alone still crashes after these checks, collect the details that can distinguish one setup from another before reporting the issue through the appropriate developer or Steam support channel:
- RimWorld game version and SteamOS version
- Your mod list and whether the same problem occurs with mods disabled
- The exact error message, if one appears
- What you were doing immediately before the crash and steps that reproduce it
- Whether the game closes, freezes, or the entire Deck restarts
- Whether updating, disabling third-party apps, or changing the compatibility tool altered the behavior
If the whole Deck restarts or remains unstable after updates, a restart, and the third-party-app check, use Steam Support’s system troubleshooting path rather than treating the event as an isolated RimWorld crash.
