Riot confirms it is making an MMORPG set in the League of Legends universe, Runeterra. Beyond that premise, key details—including gameplay systems, platforms, and a release window—remain undisclosed in the sources available as of October 3, 2026. Riot did reset the project’s direction in 2024, saying it wanted something more ambitious than a conventional MMO with a Runeterra theme.
What has Riot confirmed about the League MMO?
Riot’s official MMO recruiting page describes the project as “an MMORPG based in the League universe” and frames its purpose as bringing Runeterra to life. That establishes the genre and broad setting—not a particular region, historical period, storyline, player character, or role.
The page has listed hiring needs in areas including gameplay engineering, game design, UX design, game art, and production. Those job categories show the kinds of expertise Riot has sought; they do not confirm specific features or systems in the finished game.
Why did Riot reset the project’s direction?
In a March 21, 2024 report, Game Developer attributed the explanation to Riot co-founder Marc Merrill: the MMO was feeling too much like the “mothership” game. Merrill’s stated goal was for it to be more than a standard MMO dressed in Runeterra’s setting. As Game Developer quoted him, it “can’t just be a standard MMO with a ‘Runeterra coat of paint,’ it has to feel like a ‘significant evolution of the genre.’”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The report said the change had happened some time before it was announced and that Riot expected to stay quiet about the project for likely several years. This was described as a reset of the project’s direction; the report did not say Riot had canceled the MMO.
What gameplay has Riot shown or confirmed?
The project is confirmed as an MMORPG, but the official project page and cited reporting do not establish its playable systems. They do not confirm combat mechanics, classes, quests, progression, raids or other group activities, PvP, crafting, or other specific features. A League setting and the MMORPG label are not enough to infer how any of those systems will work.

The October 2026 GamesRadar+ interview coverage discusses Merrill’s comments about the difficulty of making an MMO and Riot’s reasons for attempting one. It does not provide a gameplay reveal or release date.
What does the development status tell us?
In January 2026, PC Gamer reported that former World of Warcraft lead producer Raymond Bartos had joined the MMO team. That is a reported staffing update, not evidence of a particular production stage, scope, or launch schedule. In the October 2026 interview coverage, Merrill discussed the challenge of making an MMO and the appeal of Runeterra’s established audience, but did not offer a timetable or promise of success.

When is the League MMO coming out, and what platforms will it use?
No release date or release window is confirmed in the sources cited here. The October 2026 GamesRadar+ coverage reports that Merrill did not provide a date when asked. Those sources also do not establish which platforms the game will support, whether it will use a subscription or free-to-play model, how it will be monetized, or what its system requirements will be.

No. Riot’s official 2020 announcement of the Realms of Runeterra book describes a physical setting book covering the world’s regions, histories, factions, characters, stories, and artwork. It can provide general universe background, but Riot did not present it as an MMO guide or as a source of confirmed game content. The dated announcement does not establish current stock or availability.
