You unlock a Risk of Rain 2 artifact by entering its symbol code into the Compound Generator, activating the laptop it opens, and completing the Bulwark’s Ambry trial. Defeating the Artifact Reliquary then unlocks that artifact for future runs. Each code is a 3-by-3 pattern of shapes, and the generator cycles through four symbols: square, circle, triangle, and diamond.
How the unlock sequence works
- Get to the Compound Generator. The standard location is Sky Meadow, a Stage 5 area. If Seekers of the Storm is enabled, the community wiki also lists a generator at Helminth Hatchery.
- Enter the artifact’s 3-by-3 pattern. Set each of the nine cells to the matching symbol, row by row from the top. The symbols cycle through square, circle, triangle, and diamond.
- Activate the laptop. This opens a portal to Bulwark’s Ambry, where the artifact trial takes place.
- Complete the trial and defeat the Artifact Reliquary. The artifact is then unlocked and can be selected in later runs.
Verified codes so far
The community wiki’s artifact reference lists a full table of codes. The patterns below are the ones we could verify against the current reference. Read each code row by row, from top to bottom.

Other artifact codes exist, but this guide does not list them yet. Treat the four rows above as examples of how the patterns are written, and check the wiki’s current artifact table for the full set.
Where to find the clues
Most artifact codes are engraved on hidden stone tablets in the game’s environments. The community wiki names these locations:

Some clues are split between two places, or appear rotated. If a pattern does not seem to match any tablet, check the orientation of the carving and look for a second half somewhere else in the stage.

Artifact of Rebirth works differently
Artifact of Rebirth is not entered as a symbol code. The community wiki ties it to interacting with the Shrine of Rebirth instead. Check the wiki’s current Rebirth page for the exact conditions, because they are not covered in this guide.
Artifact of Prestige
This guide does not yet list the code or unlock condition for Artifact of Prestige. We could not verify either against the current game version, so we have left them out rather than guess.

Choosing artifacts for a run
Artifacts change a run in different ways, so pick them by what you want from the run rather than by a general ranking. Compare them on these points:
- Difficulty: how much harder the run becomes.
- Co-op risk: whether a mistake by one player can affect the whole team, as with Death or Chaos.
- Item control: whether you gain more say over what you receive, as with Command, or take a gamble on items, as with Delusion.
- Drops and challenge modifiers: how the artifact changes what you find and how the run plays out.
