If you’re buying one Risk of Rain 2 expansion first, Survivors of the Void is the stronger default for players without a specific character preference: it has a cohesive Void-themed package, and its Steam review snapshot was more positive. Choose Seekers of the Storm instead if Seeker, Chef, The False Son, or its Colossus progression is what you most want to play. The better choice ultimately depends on preferred survivors, current regional price, and what your co-op group already owns.
At a glance: how the expansions differ

Both are add-ons, not standalone games, and each requires the base game on Steam. For the full feature and ownership details, see the Survivors of the Void and Seekers of the Storm Steam listings.

Which one fits the way you want to play?
Choose Survivors of the Void for precision, transformation, and the Void theme
Railgunner is the expansion’s precision-focused option, built around scoped shots and hitting weak points. Void Fiend offers a contrasting loop: corruption changes the survivor’s abilities as it builds. The expansion also centers its additions on the Void, with corrupted items, new threats, and new locations.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIts 14 Void items corrupt familiar items, making the expansion’s theme directly relevant to item variety as well as its characters and enemies. The Steam page names Aphelian Sanctuary, Sulfur Pools, and Siphoned Forest among its stages, and includes access to The Void.

Choose Seekers of the Storm for healing, revival, and its character roster
Seeker combines close-range attacks with healing and can revive fallen allies, making her the clearest fit if you want a support-oriented role alongside damage. Chef returns with cleavers that fly back after being thrown. The False Son is described as a durable, close-range survivor, and the expansion’s Colossus route leads to him.
Its named stages include Helminth Hatchery, Reformed Altar, and Treeborn Colony. Pick it if those characters or its progression are a stronger draw than the Void roster and theme.

How co-op ownership changes the decision
Steam’s listings say that if one player owns an expansion, its monsters, levels or stages, and items can appear for the whole lobby. Players who do not own it cannot select its new survivors or permanently unlock its content. That means friends can encounter some expansion content together without everyone buying it, but anyone who wants to play the new characters or keep their unlocks needs ownership. Check which expansions your group already has before purchasing.

Which Risk of Rain 2 DLC should you buy first?
- Pick Survivors of the Void if you have no strong roster preference and want the cohesive Void package, Railgunner’s precision play, or Void Fiend’s corruption mechanic. Its stronger accumulated Steam rating snapshot and lower displayed sale price also favored it at the cited access date; verify today’s price before treating that as a saving.
- Pick Seekers of the Storm if Seeker’s healing and ally revival, Chef, The False Son, or the Colossus route is the content you’re excited to try. Character preference is a sound reason to choose it even though its overall Steam rating snapshot was lower.
- If you play co-op, first find out who owns what. One owner can expose some expansion content to the lobby, while survivor selection and permanent unlocks remain owner-only.
