Roblox’s Ban API lets creators enforce rules within their own experiences; it does not replace Roblox’s platform-wide moderation. Creators can apply and manage bans through experience code, Open Cloud, or the Creator Hub dashboard, choosing the ban’s scope, duration, reasons, and whether suspected alternate accounts are included.
What the Ban API does—and what it does not do
Roblox announced the Ban API on June 25, 2024, as a way for creators to address repeat offenders inside their experiences. A creator’s ban enforces that experience’s rules. Roblox remains responsible for platform-wide policy enforcement, and the two kinds of enforcement should not be confused in player-facing messages. Roblox’s announcement describes the feature and its intended distinction.
Unlike the older Kick API, which disconnects a player temporarily, a ban can be temporary or permanent, can be recorded in moderation history, and can include suspected-alt propagation. Roblox said Kick would remain available while recommending Ban API for new account-action implementations. The Ban API is therefore the more suitable starting point for new systems that need persistent, reviewable account restrictions.

The Creator Hub dashboard was added in August 2024. Roblox clarified in January 2025 that the dashboard then showed universe-level bans; for place-level queries, use the relevant Open Cloud place resource path. The current Open Cloud documentation lists separate universe and place routes, so use the route matching the records you intend to manage.

Set the scope before applying a ban
Universe-wide restrictions
A universe-level ban applies across the places within that experience. In the Engine API, ApplyToUniverse controls whether the ban applies to the whole universe or only the current place; the reference says the default is true. Make the intended scope explicit in your moderation logic rather than relying on an unnoticed default.
Place-level restrictions
A place-level ban is narrower and may be appropriate when a rule violation is specific to one place. Query and manage it through the place-level Open Cloud resource path when using Open Cloud. One important exception to bear in mind: Roblox’s announcement cautions that a ban in a universe’s start place effectively prevents access to the whole universe, even if the restriction is otherwise place-level.

Understand suspected alts and device blocking separately
Suspected alternate accounts
Suspected-alt propagation is enabled by default in the Engine reference. Set ExcludeAltAccounts to true to opt out. Roblox’s announcement also described suspected-alt inclusion as the default for the dashboard/API setting. The system identifies accounts it suspects are associated with a banned user; creators do not receive a list of suspected usernames, and this should not be presented as a complete account-link map.
Roblox described the initial system as tuned to minimize false positives, while acknowledging that the tradeoff produced many false negatives. In a July 11, 2024 Developer Forum post, Roblox staff member oopsiemachine explained that decision as a preference to avoid flagging unrelated accounts, such as siblings sharing a computer, at the cost of missing some alternate accounts. That is dated context, not a current accuracy guarantee: Roblox’s official material cited here gives no numerical false-positive or false-negative rate.

Optional device blocking
ApplyDeviceBlock is a separate optional Engine setting, not another name for alt detection. The current Players reference says that when it is enabled for a currently connected banned user, the device is blocked from rejoining the experience for 24 hours. Do not describe that behavior as a permanent device ban or as a way to view alternate accounts.
Choose duration and write clear reasons
The Engine API expresses duration in seconds. Use -1 for a permanent ban; zero and other negative values are rejected. The DisplayReason is shown in the join-denial experience, is text filtered, and can contain up to 400 characters. PrivateReason is internal moderation context and can contain up to 1,000 characters. Keep the public explanation understandable to the affected player and reserve private notes for relevant internal context. The Players reference documents these fields and limits.

For non-permanent bans, the dashboard displays an expiration date. Use ban history—through the dashboard or GetBanHistoryAsync()—to inform decisions about repeat violations, while basing duration on the experience’s published rules rather than on an improvised escalation.
Plan appeals and apply rules fairly
Creators handle appeals for bans applied through the Ban API. Roblox says it will not process those appeals or reinstate users banned through experience API use. Publish an appeal route, make the experience rules accessible, and write public ban messages that identify the action as coming from the experience’s moderation team rather than implying that Roblox imposed a platform-wide sanction.

Experience rules must comply with Roblox’s Community Standards and Terms of Use, and enforcement must be fair rather than arbitrary or discriminatory. Roblox’s announcement gives discrimination based on gender as an example of an impermissible rule. The Ban API is a moderation tool, not permission to impose rules that conflict with platform policy. What creators with multiple experiences should know
The announcement does not describe a single built-in list that combines bans across all of a creator’s separate experiences. The API information is experience-level, so creators who need a cross-experience view must query each experience separately or build their own aggregation. Within an experience, choose the universe or place route that matches the scope of the records being listed or changed.
