Yes—the quote is real. Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki said during a New York Times Hard Fork interview published on November 21, 2025, that the problem of predators on Roblox was “not necessarily just as a problem, but an opportunity as well.” He was describing an opportunity to build safer ways for young people to communicate and socialize—not saying that predators themselves were welcome or commercially valuable. But the wording was widely criticized, especially because it came amid lawsuits and continuing concern about whether Roblox adequately protects children.
Since that interview, Roblox has expanded age checks, age-grouped chat, parental controls, child-focused account categories and developer-verification requirements. Its own filings also acknowledge that users can evade age checks and that age classifications can be wrong.

What David Baszucki actually said
The remark came while Hard Fork hosts were discussing the problem of predators using Roblox. According to coverage of the interview, Baszucki rejected the characterization that Roblox has a predator problem and then said: We think of it not necessarily just as a problem, but an opportunity as well.
He went on to frame that opportunity as developing better systems so young people could build, communicate and socialize more safely. The surrounding discussion included AI-powered age gating and moderation, rather than an argument that child exploitation was desirable.

That distinction matters. The available evidence supports criticism of Baszucki’s phrasing and handling of the question; it does not support claiming that he endorsed predators or regarded abuse as a business opportunity. The problem was that, in a child-safety context, “opportunity” can sound as though the central issue is Roblox’s product development rather than harm experienced by children and families.

Why the wording triggered backlash
Critics were not reacting only to one isolated word. The comment arrived during a broader dispute over whether Roblox’s design and moderation systems sufficiently reduce foreseeable risks to minors.

- The critical interpretation: the CEO of a platform heavily used by children appeared to minimize the danger or reframe it as a corporate innovation challenge.
Both interpretations can be acknowledged without attributing an unsupported motive. Baszucki may have meant “an opportunity to improve safety,” but the phrasing failed to foreground the children potentially affected by grooming, sexual solicitation, impersonation or attempts to move conversations off-platform.
Roblox is a user-generated gaming and social platform. Users can play experiences, create games and communicate through platform features. That combination makes safety more complicated than simply removing a few bad games: risk can arise from user accounts, messages, voice or text communication, game design, social spaces and behavior that changes after content has been reviewed.
What Roblox says it does to detect abuse
In its regulatory filing, Roblox says it reviews uploaded images, audio, video and experiences through automated systems and human review. It also says it uses tools including PhotoDNA to identify child sexual abuse material, provides reporting and blocking features, and reports suspected child-exploitation material to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

The company has said an AI system identified signals that resulted in 1,200 reports of potential child-exploitation attempts being submitted to NCMEC during the first half of 2025. That is a company-reported number of potential attempts or reports—not 1,200 confirmed predators, and not proof that every report represented a substantiated crime. The Associated Press reported the figure in its coverage of a Louisiana lawsuit.

January 2026: mandatory age checks for chat
Roblox’s 2025 annual filing says that, beginning in January 2026, it implemented mandatory age-check systems in all regions where chat is enabled before users can access chat. The company says the system is intended to allow communication between users in similar age groups or through “Trusted Connections.”
Depending on the process and region, age checks may use facial age estimation, identity verification or age information supplied by a parent or caregiver. Roblox also explicitly acknowledges that users have evaded these systems and that users can be placed in the wrong age category.
That makes age assurance a risk-reduction measure, not proof of identity or trustworthiness. An estimate that someone appears to be 14 does not establish that the person is actually 14, reveal their intentions or guarantee that they are safe.
April 2026: Roblox Kids and Roblox Select
On April 13, 2026, Roblox announced two age-based account categories:
- Roblox Kids: intended for ages 5–8.
- Roblox Select: intended for ages 9–15.
Roblox says these account types combine age checks, content ratings, communication defaults, moderation and parental controls. Feature availability and exact implementation can vary by region and may depend on the result of an age check.

The company says younger accounts are intended to receive more age-appropriate content, age-based communication settings, safety checks for available games and expanded parental oversight. Game maturity labels may include Minimal, Mild and Moderate. Some categories, including social hangouts and free-form drawing games, are excluded by default for younger account types, according to Roblox’s announcement.
Roblox also announced developer-verification requirements for relevant content, including identity verification, two-step verification and an active Roblox Plus subscription. Verifying developers may make abuse more costly and improve accountability, but it does not verify every player or guarantee that a game or conversation is safe.

What parents can control
Roblox’s current parental-control system allows a linked parent to review or manage screen time, content maturity, spending limits, privacy settings, connections, specific games and some chat settings. Parents can also view usage insights such as daily screen time and on-platform connections.
The parent must use a separate Roblox account, obtain parent privileges, complete an age check and link that account to the child’s account. Roblox says the age check may involve facial age estimation, government-issued identification or a credit card, depending on the region and process.
- Create or use the parent’s own Roblox account.
- Complete the required parent age check.
- Link the parent account to the child’s account.
- Open Settings → Parental Controls.
- Review communication, privacy, content, spending and screen-time settings.
- Review the child’s connections and block or report suspicious users.
- Review frequently used games and block or approve individual experiences.
These controls depend on parental awareness and account linking. Roblox’s help documentation says unlinking the accounts removes the parent’s ability to manage privacy settings, permissions, screen-time limits and spending limits. Settings and defaults can also change as Roblox rolls out the newer account program.
Parents should treat these tools as safeguards, not substitutes for conversation. Children should know that grooming can involve requests for secrecy, personal information, photos, money, contact outside Roblox or a move to another messaging service. A child should be encouraged to stop responding, block and report the account, and tell a trusted adult.

Age checks and age-separated chat
Age grouping can reduce unrestricted adult-child contact and give moderation systems narrower communication groups to monitor. But age bands are not the same as verified identities. Users can evade checks, lie about their age, use another person’s account or exploit trusted-contact features. Predatory behavior can also occur between users who appear to be in the same age group.
Restricting chat may reduce one route to contact while encouraging bad actors to try coded language, other accounts or outside platforms. Facial and identity checks also raise privacy, security and accessibility concerns.
AI moderation and human review
Automated systems can process huge volumes of text, audio, images and behavioral signals, and may help prioritize serious reports. They can also produce false positives and false negatives. Slang, sarcasm, multilingual communication, coded language and rapidly changing tactics are difficult to interpret reliably.
A report count does not show how many cases were confirmed, how many were mistaken or what happened afterward. Likewise, a company’s description of a moderation system establishes what it is designed to do, not how effectively it prevents grooming in practice.

Linked controls give parents more direct options than relying solely on platform moderation. However, they do not help if a parent does not know about the child’s account, if the child uses another account or if the parent misunderstands a maturity label. Blocking one experience also does not eliminate risks elsewhere on the platform.

The legal and regulatory picture
In Louisiana, the state attorney general sued Roblox, alleging that the platform exposed children to sexual predators and did not provide adequate safeguards. Those are allegations in litigation, not findings that Roblox knowingly enabled abuse or was legally liable in every reported incident.
In April 2026, Roblox reached a reported $12 million settlement with Nevada involving enhanced youth protections. AP reported that the agreement included facial age estimation, age-grouped chat restrictions, expanded parental oversight for users under 16 and new children’s account structures. A settlement is not necessarily an admission of wrongdoing or a court finding after trial.
An Oklahoma attorney general petition filed in May 2026 similarly alleged that earlier Roblox safeguards were inadequate and described risks involving child access, communication, content moderation and user-generated experiences. Because a petition is a legal pleading, its factual assertions should be understood as claims by the state unless established separately.

These proceedings show substantial regulatory scrutiny. They do not, by themselves, answer the unresolved practical question: how often do Roblox’s safeguards detect, prevent and appropriately respond to harmful conduct?
The key distinction: safety claims versus safety results
Roblox has announced meaningful changes: mandatory chat age checks, age-grouped communication, child-focused accounts, parental settings, moderation tools and developer verification. Those measures could make some forms of unwanted contact harder and give families more control.
But several limits remain important:
- Age estimation is not the same as identity verification.
- A verified or classified age does not prove a user is trustworthy.
- “Trusted Connections” can still be abused if the underlying relationship or account is compromised.
- Moderation can miss indirect, coded or evolving behavior.
- Controls are less useful when accounts are not linked or when parents do not know how the settings work.
- Company-reported detection numbers do not establish prevention rates or confirmed-crime totals.
For parents, the sensible position is neither that Roblox’s tools solve the problem nor that every interaction on Roblox is inherently dangerous. The platform has added more layers of protection, but Roblox’s own filing says those layers can be bypassed or make mistakes.
Bottom line
Baszucki really did describe the predator-safety challenge as “not necessarily just as a problem, but an opportunity as well.” The context indicates that he meant an opportunity to build safer systems, not that he welcomed predators. The criticism is nevertheless understandable: the wording made a child-protection crisis sound like a product opportunity, while the interview also involved a disputed rejection of the premise that Roblox has a predator problem.
Roblox has since expanded its safeguards, but announcements are not proof that the systems prevent grooming or eliminate risk. The most accurate conclusion is that the company has introduced additional barriers and parental tools while acknowledging that age checks and moderation remain imperfect. Families should use the available controls, keep accounts linked and treat direct communication, secrecy and requests to move off-platform as warning signs.
