Roblox is requiring an age check before users can access chat as the company rolls out its new communication rules globally wherever chat is available. The requirement does not necessarily mean that every player must complete a facial scan: Roblox offers facial age estimation as one route and government-ID verification as another option in eligible cases.

The result is an age group that helps determine who a player can communicate with and which chat features are available. Roblox announced the broad rollout on January 7, 2026, following an earlier announcement and voluntary period in November 2025. However, the exact requirement, consent rules, and available features can vary by country or region.
What Roblox’s mandatory chat age check means
Roblox is using age checks to place users into communication groups and reduce contact between adults and younger players. A player who wants to use Roblox chat may need to complete an age check before chat features become available.

The most accurate description is mandatory age checking for chat, rather than a mandatory facial scan. Roblox describes three related but different concepts:

That distinction matters. “Age estimation” does not necessarily establish a precise date of birth, and “age check” does not necessarily mean that Roblox receives or stores a facial scan itself.
Why Roblox is introducing age-based chat groups
Roblox says the system is designed to make communication more age-appropriate and reduce interactions between adults and younger users. Players are generally placed into communication groups based on their estimated or verified age.
The change is an access-control and safety measure, not a guarantee that unsafe conversations will disappear. Chat remains subject to Roblox’s moderation, filtering, Community Standards, blocking tools, reporting systems, and regional restrictions.
Which age groups Roblox uses
Roblox currently lists these age groups:
- 5–8
- 9–12
- 13–15
- 16–17
- 18–20
- 21 and older
The age group is not simply a public birthday label. It is used to determine communication eligibility and the level of filtering or restriction applied to different chat features.
How to complete the Roblox age check
Roblox says users can start the process from:
Settings > Account Info > Age Group
From there, an eligible user can choose the available age-check method. The facial route uses a selfie-style video. Roblox identifies Persona as its current third-party provider for age estimation.
Option 1: Facial age estimation
Facial age estimation analyzes a facial image and video to estimate an age range. It is intended to determine which age group best fits the user, not to establish a precise birth date.

Option 2: Government-ID verification
Roblox also provides a government-ID route in eligible circumstances. This may be useful when a player believes the facial estimate is inaccurate or cannot complete the facial process.
ID verification and facial age estimation are not identical processes. ID verification is intended to verify age using an official document, while facial age estimation produces an estimated age range from facial media.
Why Roblox might ask for another check
Some players may later be prompted to re-check their age to retain access to trusted-friend connections or more expressive chat features. Roblox may also change the re-check process, eligible features, or timing as the system develops.

Who can chat with whom?
Roblox’s current support guidance says users generally communicate with people in similar age groups. The exact experience depends on the user’s age group, whether the age check is complete, privacy settings, region, and the particular chat feature.

These are broad support-documentation categories rather than a promise that every account in every country will have exactly the same controls.
What are “trusted friends” on Roblox?
Trusted friends are a limited exception to the ordinary age-group boundaries. They do not mean that any adult can freely add or privately message any teenager.
Roblox says a user aged 13–17 cannot create a trusted-friend connection with an adult aged 18 or older unless they establish a real-life connection through an approved method, such as live QR-code scanning or contact importing.
Trusted-friend conversations remain subject to Roblox’s safety monitoring and reporting rules. The trusted-friend feature therefore should not be treated as an unmoderated or completely private channel.

What chat filters still do
Age checking does not replace Roblox’s standard safety systems. Filtered chat continues to block or transform categories of content such as:
- Personal information
- Sexual content
- Bullying and harassment
- Violence
- Instructions to move a conversation off-platform
Less-filtered communication remains governed by Roblox’s Community Standards. Players and parents should still use the block and report tools, because age grouping cannot identify or prevent every harmful interaction.
Does every Roblox player have to submit a facial scan?
No—not based on Roblox’s published description of the system. Roblox requires an age check for chat in the broad rollout, but facial age estimation is one available method. Government-ID verification may also be available, particularly when a user disputes a facial estimate.

What happens to facial data?
Roblox’s facial-age-estimation help documentation says that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from that facial-estimation process. Roblox’s separate biometric and facial-media privacy notice says that Persona assists with identity verification and processes face geometry and related materials.
That privacy notice says biometric data is generally deleted within 30 days, unless a longer retention period is required by law. These statements should be read together and with their attribution:
- The facial-age-estimation help article describes what Roblox says it receives or stores from that process.
- The separate privacy notice describes processing by Roblox’s service provider, Persona.
- The stated deletion period includes an exception where longer retention is legally required.
It would therefore be too broad to say that every image or biometric artifact is immediately deleted in every verification scenario. Users should review the current Roblox and Persona privacy notices for the route they choose and their region.

Regional differences matter
The January 7 announcement describes a global rollout wherever Roblox chat is available, but Roblox’s regional documentation does not describe identical rules everywhere.

For example, Roblox’s Australia-specific documentation describes a voluntary age check for communication features alongside stricter rules intended to prevent adults from contacting users under 16. That regional guidance does not fit a simplistic claim that every Australian user faces exactly the same mandatory requirement as users elsewhere.
Local law, parental-consent requirements, privacy rules, and Roblox’s regional product settings can affect:
- Whether an age check is mandatory or voluntary
- Which verification methods are offered
- Whether voice, direct, group, or game chat is available
- Whether parental consent is required
- How long verification-related information is retained
If a player’s account does not show the same options described here, the likely explanation may be regional availability or a change to Roblox’s current rollout—not necessarily a failed age check.

Parents should treat age checking as one layer of Roblox safety rather than a substitute for supervision.
- Check the account’s age-check status. Open Settings > Account Info > Age Group and review the status and available options.
- Open Parental Controls. Review communication settings, including game chat, direct chat, Party settings, and voice-related options where available.
- Check consent requirements. Roblox says users under 9 need parental consent for game chat, while users under 13 need parental consent for direct chat.
- Choose features deliberately. Decide whether the child needs game chat, direct chat, Party features, or voice communication enabled at all.
- Explain the limits of age grouping. Tell the child that an age check changes who they may be matched with, but it does not make every conversation safe.
- Practice blocking and reporting. Make sure the child knows how to leave a conversation, block an account, report misconduct, and tell a trusted adult.
- Review the rules for your country. Consent, feature availability, and adult-to-child communication restrictions can differ by region.
Roblox’s parental-control system gives parents meaningful controls over game chat, direct chat, Party settings, game access, and other account restrictions. The amount of control available can change as the child reaches older age milestones and may depend on the child’s region.

A player who does not complete a required age check should expect chat access to be restricted or unavailable where the requirement applies. The exact outcome can differ by region and by feature. Other parts of Roblox, such as playing experiences that do not require chat, may remain available, but players should rely on the account’s current prompts and local support guidance for the precise result.
If the estimated age group appears wrong, the practical next step is to check whether the account offers the government-ID verification route. Players should not create a new account or submit misleading information simply to bypass a communication restriction.
