Roblox’s new safety tools tie chat access to an age check, place younger users in age-based account types with different game catalogs, and let linked parents manage settings such as chat, games, spending, and screen time. These are safeguards Roblox says it has implemented—not a guarantee that harm cannot occur. Rules and feature availability vary by region.
How Roblox’s age-based accounts work
Roblox says Roblox Kids and Roblox Select became globally available in June 2026. They are designed for different age groups, while the standard Roblox account is intended for age-checked users aged 16 and older. Roblox notes that exact ages, games, and features can differ by region, so these labels should not be treated as a universal settings map.
| Account type | Designed for | Chat | Game catalog | Parent controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roblox Kids | Ages 5–8 | Off by default. A linked parent may enable in-game text chat where available. | Limited to Minimal or Mild content maturity ratings, according to Roblox. | A linked parent can manage available settings, including game and chat access. |
| Roblox Select | Ages 9–15 | Available chat and access increase gradually with age; exact rules vary by region. | May include Moderate content maturity ratings, according to Roblox. | A linked parent can manage available settings; controls change as the child gets older. |
| Standard Roblox account | Age-checked users aged 16 and older | Chat requires completing an age check. | Not stated in the cited Roblox account announcement as a single maturity limit for this account type. | Controls and access depend on the user’s age and account setup. |
Roblox says its Kids and Select catalogs receive additional screening and ongoing review. The company says they exclude certain social hangout, free-form drawing, and sensitive-issue experiences. These are descriptions of Roblox’s own process, not the findings of an independent audit.
Does Roblox require an age check to chat?
Yes. Roblox states that users who have not completed an age check cannot chat, regardless of their age. The company describes government ID verification and Facial Age Estimation as age-check options. Users without an age check may still see age-based game catalogs, but Roblox says chat remains unavailable to them. See Roblox’s account types and age-check explainer for its published rules.

Roblox says age estimation is imperfect and reports that testing by the UK Age Check Certification Scheme found a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18. Roblox reported that figure in 2026; it does not mean every estimate is within 1.4 years, and it is not evidence that the process prevents harm.
What parents can manage with a linked account
Linking a parent account to a child’s account gives the parent access to Roblox’s Parental Controls. Roblox describes controls for screen-time and spending limits, reviewing a child’s friends, blocking or reporting connections, approving Trusted Friend requests, adjusting chat settings, and allowing or blocking particular games.

Which controls are available depends on the child’s age. Roblox says some settings continue until age 16; it describes screen-time and spending limits and some friend-list actions specifically for children under 13. Review the child’s actual account and the current Roblox Safety Center, since both available controls and instructions can change.
How Trusted Friends fit in
Roblox describes Trusted Friends as a way for age-checked users to communicate across age groups with people they know. A linked parent can become a child’s Trusted Friend, and younger users need parental approval for certain additions. Roblox says its chat filters and monitoring still apply; availability varies by country. This feature does not remove the need to review a child’s contacts and conversations.

What to do if an age check is wrong
Roblox publishes several correction routes, but directs users to its current support instructions for the details. According to the company, an adult whose estimated age is 18 or older can make a one-time reset in account settings; a linked parent can correct a child’s age once after the initial age check; and a user can use a valid government ID to correct their age. Check Roblox’s current age-check guidance before trying to change an account.

Roblox describes age checks, content ratings, catalog reviews, moderation, filtering, and monitoring as layers of protection. Its published explanations establish the rules and processes the company says it uses; they do not independently verify how well each measure works or show that the tools prevent grooming, exploitation, or other harms. Parents should treat the controls as ways to limit access and supervise use, not as a substitute for ongoing conversations and attention to a child’s experience.
